Big Elite Streamers Giving Up On Streaming Elite?

Well, it depends. Back in the day, magazine reviews were the thing... but again, that was generally just one person's opinion. And they have a 6-10 week lead time. Nowadays, Youtubers can have a 'review' up in a couple of hours... so people do go looking for them, and that's fine IMO. I don't think advising people NOT to buy Odyssey at this point is bad advice - practically everyone I've seen has taken the more sensible approach and said 'wait for a bit and see how this pans out'. That's fair enough IMO.

Does that make them 'influencers'? Or just imparting honest, knowledgeable advice (however it's presented)?

There are multiple points to that. Magazine reviews had a process which required it going through an editor and be approved for print before seeing the light of day. Even then, the reach of a magazine was incomparable to the reach social media has today. So far as my earlier comments about people saying not to buy X or Y product, that isn't based on EDO. That sphere of influence touches literally every product made from cars to pencil types. Imparting advice on "Here are the facts as we know them (without excluding any or fabricating opinions as facts, or my favorite twisting X into Y as a fact) you have to make the choice as to whether this is correct for you" is something that is not only sensible but should be supported. The opposite side of that coin however where someone injects their own opinion as a fact, such as those who quote their own poll on YT which is completely untrustworthy let alone not broad enough to get any real insight; Then to tell people to stay away from a product because of it is another thing entirely. The amount of polls that have popped up on my Youtube suggestions in the last few weeks that were complete confirmation bias based, let alone coming to me when I don't even know who the creator was to begin with, is laughable.

Most (if not all) of the "larger" youtube channels are run by many more people than the frontman. Linux Tech Tips for instance has an entire company with dozens of employees behind it. Stuff is scripted, storyboarded, edited, re-edited, and so on long before we see any of it. Even the smaller ones have at least someone holding the camera. People like OA and Yamiks etc rarely show their face & use in-game footage as the video portion, so maybe they work alone, but most don't. It's big business nowadays.

But aye. Polls are daft. OA quoted one of his a few months back, and even though he did acknowledge that it perhaps wasn't representative, he still went on to use it as validation of the point he was trying to make.

Obsidian Ant has a rather interesting vocal narrative style.
Like he's reading a News bulletin or some such.

Mr Jonty. It's been a long time since I have seen your name on a post. I do hope you are well. We had a laugh during the launch party, but that now feels like a lifetime ago. :)

I concur with the way he speaks. It's soothing to my ears. He does his best to present a level approach to his criticisms, and you can tell he is mindful of what he says. Perhaps due to his nature, perhaps due to his liking by FDEV. Regardless, he is a good chap.

I've noticed that more than a few streamers who made their names streaming Elite have moved on or seriously cut back on Elite. This is not good.
Beta max, vcrs, CRT monitors, 16mb memory sticks, floppy disks, 8tracks, record players (in the bulky wood box), flip phones, beepers, bell bottoms, model-t, phonebooths, geforce 256, frontier developments, Sputnik 1, linking logs, etch a sketch, Saturday morning cartoons and bill Paxton's Aliens iconic line "---- ---- ---".

My favorite streamers quit long ago...

First NeonRaven...then FireyToad ... haven't really taken time to get into it with any of the others.

The 'Content creators'/'Influencers' are ultimately advertisers, It's therefore up to the company's marketing department as to whether they want their product promoted in a particular manner.

OA posted a video today, praising the stream and Lave interview. The CM was honest in his answer, and that's a good thing, whether you like the answer or not.
to be even fairer, watching ED stream is about as entertaining as playing ED.

I wonder if people watch netflix while watching ED streams.
Ouch.

Burr Pit, doesn't even have Twitch channel.

So yea, everyone gave up pretty much.

Hey,
We do have a twitch channel ...and used to stream on there but gave up on Twitch a long time ago for Twitch reasons nothing to do with Elite. We don't really consider ourselves streamers, its something we've done but isn't our "goto" thing.

Our main prescence has always been and continues to be YouTube. We do occasionally stream on YouTube but can't do that regularly right now for personal IRL reasons ...again nothing to do with Elite.

On YouTube we're cranking out videos at the same rate that we always have (so regular Witchspace News bulletins every Friday afternoon and then informational shorts and whatever else takes our fancy when we can as often as we can) and we have no plans to change any of that. o7

I'm not sure if the OP is accurate as streamers make their living off this game so it's a hard choice to drop it. Although there are plenty of other spacey games to cover these days now, and the wise ones (like OA) have already been covering other games to broaden their scope.

Where the OP is far more accurate is with other content creators, like the ones who created the big in game events, many of those have certainly left this game now. The once vibrant discords I was in where big events were talked about and promoted are like ghost towns now. The in game creativity this community once had has gone and I doubt anything frontier do or say will bring them back now.

People said there won't be big community initiatives anymore, like the Rift saga, Salome event, early Colonia initiative, Distant Worlds, birth of Canonn, Gnosis event, DSSA etc, and they were right, as no one seems to be stepping up to replace the people and player factions that were behind content like that. No one is bringing new events and ideas to the community these days, because no one trusts or has faith in the game anymore to warrant the work it takes.

Yeah....

There was a huge campaign against the bright blue ARX button.

So, they removed it, and now replaced it with THE BIGGEST BUTTON ON SCREEN EVER (but it's orange... so it's ok?)

It's important to remember that not every streamer makes their living from it. I certainly do not make anywhere near enough to do it full time, I have my day job to live on and streaming provides some pocket change. I just do it for the fun and the social interaction that comes with it.

Those that do make a living from streaming find it wise to diversify, as it's risky to tie yourself to only one game. Games come and go, so you really want an audience that will watch YOU rather than just the game you play.

Streaming for a living is not as easy as people think, there is much work involved that viewers don't see. It's essentially making your own TV show, but you have to do all the jobs yourself: sound, lighting, directing, presenting, graphics, pre-production etc. and do them on the fly. Even then, only a few will become big enough for it to be their only income source.

Agreed. I only do it for fun and the community company. The amount of money generated by streaming is trivial and it is a lot more "work" than it looks. I'd hate to do it full-time, it would completely take the fun out of it. Pocket change is exactly right for most streamers.

To be meaningful and accessible these sort of events need assistance from Fdev. Fdev aren't interested/too busy elsewhere. The biggest one (whilst is currently still operating) is "Turning the Wheel" which has had virtual no acknowledgement from Fdev.

Cheers,

Drew.
