Well, it depends. Back in the day, magazine reviews were the thing... but again, that was generally just one person's opinion. And they have a 6-10 week lead time. Nowadays, Youtubers can have a 'review' up in a couple of hours... so people do go looking for them, and that's fine IMO. I don't think advising people NOT to buy Odyssey at this point is bad advice - practically everyone I've seen has taken the more sensible approach and said 'wait for a bit and see how this pans out'. That's fair enough IMO.
Does that make them 'influencers'? Or just imparting honest, knowledgeable advice (however it's presented)?
There are multiple points to that. Magazine reviews had a process which required it going through an editor and be approved for print before seeing the light of day. Even then, the reach of a magazine was incomparable to the reach social media has today. So far as my earlier comments about people saying not to buy X or Y product, that isn't based on EDO. That sphere of influence touches literally every product made from cars to pencil types. Imparting advice on "Here are the facts as we know them (without excluding any or fabricating opinions as facts, or my favorite twisting X into Y as a fact) you have to make the choice as to whether this is correct for you" is something that is not only sensible but should be supported. The opposite side of that coin however where someone injects their own opinion as a fact, such as those who quote their own poll on YT which is completely untrustworthy let alone not broad enough to get any real insight; Then to tell people to stay away from a product because of it is another thing entirely. The amount of polls that have popped up on my Youtube suggestions in the last few weeks that were complete confirmation bias based, let alone coming to me when I don't even know who the creator was to begin with, is laughable.
