Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

According to the front page there are a little over 3.1m registered 'citizens', and currently total funding in the regions of $354m, meaning the average spend is just over $100.

Now, that 3.1m may include all the folk who registered for 'free fly events', and the $354m may include the secondary investment CIG gathered, so take those figures with a pinch of salt, but it's unlikely that there are under 1m backers who've paid at this point.

On Player Numbers:

The last official take on player numbers was this from CR in Dec 2020:

Today, we stand at 1,177,919 Paying Accounts and counting.
we’ve continued to average 30k Daily Active Users throughout the year, which is a 70% increase over last year.

Which if you're feeling waspish, can be re-read this way ;)

Translation:
  • Last year they had an average of 9000 players a day. [?]
  • Currently 2.5% of their paying customers play daily.
  • Their capture rate is down to 40% (from 50% in 2016)

The account numbers are most likely pumped up by free fly accounts in the main, as you say. (Alt accounts might play a role too, but they would be counted as 'paying accounts' under Chris's definition.)

At that point in time the funds divided by paying backers = $338,593,790 / 1,177,919 = $287 per backer.

But obviously that will be heavily tilted by the spending of uber-whales...

On the Investment Cash:

When discussing the investment money in their financial blog, CIG firewall it from player funding. IE for 2019:

Total Pledges & Income: $60,717
Total Costs Capex & Investment: $70,431
= -$9,715
Cumulative Net Position: -$2,720

But...

Cumulative Net Position After Investments: $60,530

Due to the $45m in 2018 & $17.25m in 2019.

There is, shall we say, some scepticism about whether the investment fund is entirely that firewalled. (Or indeed that intact). Mainly due to the sudden surge in the funding tracker which started shortly after the investment announcement.

The investment itself was signed off 23rd May 2018
It was announced December 2018.
A noticeable step change in funding began December 2018

But I guess any naughtiness would come out in the wash ;)

And, if i remember rightly, CIG only make a statement about the investment after it was spotted in their financials. I mean, i'm sure they didn't think it would go unnoticed, but why wait a whole 6 months and until people already spotted it before telling anyone?

Surely they didn't want to keep word of the investment quiet until after citizen con and their annual big whaling exercise?

Why would they? Selling out to big finance isn't popular and accountability isn't required because kickstarter "backer" rights are soft as butter.

It seems you like to show us bugs in alpha.
Can we have a video of enemies not moving during combats ? With a little song perhaps ?

Why my dear Ant, the whole point is to have fun with it. That was a lovely song about how investing your time in a buggy alpha can trap you in a perpetual purgatory…

If you want to sing a lovely song about how investing your time in Elite can leave you moving way too slow, be my guest ;)

Criticising flaws in a game is fine and legit. Having a laugh while doing it, doubly so :)

Terribly sorry you’ve had a sense of humour loss on this one though…

Oops, forgot you only posted bugs from alpha, not from released games :p
Perpetual purgatory = 15 min max = one trip in Apex ;)

But tell you what, show me another alpha that’s been charging AAA prices and selling macro purchases for nearly a decade, and I’ll go point fingers at that too if you like ;)
You mean funding a company to release a space game with ship interiors, EVA and beautiful planets to walk on ? For only 45€ ? Easy response : CIG. And to my great regret, the recent news from FDEV confirm that there is indeed no other company that is willing to offer that. You can point fingers at CIG with no shame, like a lot of ED players do now

Oo, it’s macho Ant, throwing words around like release 💪

The proof is in the pudding sweetness. For the $3000 capital ship with the 80 crew compliment… even more so ;)

And I’m sure you care about those type of deliveries. Because you wouldn’t want the game to be funded by ripping off mugs via a long succession of barely plausible but highly detailed lies, now would you? That would be immoral. And could lead to finger pointing.

(PS, it’s actually €50 for the ship interior tour currently. It’s been a while you see…)

(PPS, FDev only said 'not in EDO' regarding ship interiors, so you’ve made a factual booboo there I’m afraid. But guess it means the race is still on for release eh? ;))

Yeah, it's not "funding" when you get sold a product that isnt delivered. I call it fraud, usually.

"FDev only said 'not in EDO' regarding ship interiors" >>> you really believe that ? With the recent news of no port to new gen console and no onfoot VR ? You really believe they will invest in ship interiors before new gen console and VR ?
It's actually no ship interior at all for ED whatever the amount of money you give to FDEV investors. The investors only care to make a good fiscal year. 2021 had been a good fiscal year with EDO for PC, 2022 will be a good fiscal year with EDO for old gen console. That's it. Pray that they don't botch the PC version to fit EDO on console when they will unite all versions.

And you should say that to ED players, not me. In 2 weeks they will see Orison and volumetric clouds. The more FDEV wait to release interiors, the more CIG will extend the gap for all the other "details" already released (atmospheric flight, EVA, beautiful planets with weather, ocean, grid nesting, streaming assets tech). You know that CIG is working on Vulkan right ? Some news about Vulkan for Cobra ?
