Elk (in Germany they called "Wapiti Hirsch", i search long for the right english name, its a bit difficult and the english wikipedia is less helpful)
Moose (in Germany they called Elch)
or am i wrong?
Based on a post I made in a different thread:
Wapiti is used in British English for what North Americans call elk. Although I believe the word elk came about because the first English speaking settlers in North America saw a big deer and called it elk because that was their only frame of reference. They presumably hadn’t seen a moose (elk) yet.
Eland has the same etymology, it’s actually Dutch for elk (moose).
Actually, and to add further complication, moose is now often used in British English and by speakers of languages that have an elk-like word (älg in Swedish for example) when speaking English.
This all shows why scientific names are important because all other names are subject to change depending on who is speaking and where they are.
So roughly speaking:
North America: elk
Europe: wapiti
Europe: elk
North America: moose
The "Elk" in the meta-wishlist is the North American elk (aka wapiti aka Cervus canadensis). I'll clarify it on the list.
I assumed the few people (only 2 or 3) who voted for "Elk" without specifying meant the Cervus canadensis. I wouldn't say all the Europeans associate the word "elk" with the European moose. As you markun have posted yourself, that's mainly a thing in the Northern European countries, afaik. Maybe it's just me but when I first learnt about Alces alces, the English name I associated it with was "moose" and not "elk".

i have both in my list, but i called the american elk -> wapiti elk
i didn't know that moose was called elk in british english, but it kind of makes sense. The German word "Elch" is certainly derived from the Norwegian "elg" or the Swedish "älg". Why shouldn't the British do the same. Funnily enough, I just learned through the translator that "elch" are also called "elen or elentier" in Germany. i really learn so much here and through the game. Thank you for explain
