Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

So who decide if, for instance, a switch to dx12/vulkan for the Cobra engine is needed to be able to release ED on new console ? DB ? I've read that he only owns 32% of shares. It's enough to decide for the whole company ? So he is the only one to decide ? It's DB that have decided that the EDO alpha was in pretty good shape and can pass from alpha to gold without beta ay the risk to hurt the licence ? It's him that have decided to stop work on VR on foot midway ?

How do you think anything works in a normal company? Usually its management in conjunction with the appropriate specialists make such decisions.
For what I know, ED was announced for a 10 years cycle, we are near the end.

That particular quote has been so often misused and misquoted.

It was more like they said they had enough content they could add that they could keep development going for at least 10 years.

It was never a promise that they would keep development going for 10 years or that they would stop at 10 years.

Yup, just said as much. Complicated games are complicated.

But the whole areas in SC are needlessly big i feel and finding your way around is a challenge. At least in Odyssey stations you can run around the whole area in a matter of seconds. Its not like you can get lost.
SC is always a bit less taxing when you have someone around who knows the ins and outs of the game...and is also aware of the little workarounds to avoid the worst of the general bugginess of playing the thing. Ci¬G started the guide sytem to help with that but there are always plenty of willing folk around...a great many of them ED players too, who are more than happy to help out. Kate Byrne managed to find quite a few during the course of her experiences as a newbie...someone who knows and has played both games is always a help getting to grips with SC :)

A bit of a different topic: Death of a Spacemen.

What are people, that pledged for a long time, thoughts on this? You knew this when you were pledging, right?
Ways to avoid griefing - would it be possible or just wishful thinking?

Do you belive they will go through with this? Or will it change before the release?
What kind of impact will it have on the player? Will players avoid the game because of it?

That's was initially laid out many years ago. Found the whole idea horrible. Many backers seem to love the idea though.

As a noobie to ED just after EDH dropped I found it a steep learning curve! I really feel for anyone trying to get a handle on it now.

I'm now facing the same stupidly steep curve in SC... Deep Breath. I know I'm going to need it!

Yup, a guide is mega useful.

Mole and others have often said though in game there are generally lots of helpful people. If you give a shout out in chat someone will likely come and guide you. As i said, i had one nice person guide me through the station.

From what i've seen, the in-game community is much nicer than the out of game community.

Important option to change : turn vsync off, some players gain noticeable fps by doing so.
For the pagefile, it must be on a ssd and I suggest to let it on 'system managed'.

It is...strangely enough, I've mentioned it a few times but folks used reading the endless nonsense from the redditors and forumites always seemed skeptical. Like I mentioned, Kate Byrne found a few ED and SC players to show her around and she commented on how generally helpful the folk she had contact with were, not just in game but SC players offering her tips and advice in the video comments etc... we're not all pure nutters :D

Personally, i'd much rather have fixed stable frame rates in a game that periodic extra FPS. I also don't like the tearing that can occur with vsync off.

In any first person game i want a stable 60 FPS, otherwise its too noticable, but above 60 doesn't make that much of a difference, so if the graphics card can have a bit of a rest when in not such a demanding area, i'm happy to give the little fella a break.

The comments are really funny

and

Some "what is alpha anyway?" type discussion. Good for a chuckle.

I disagree. I like the SC areas how they are. You do get used to most of it, but even me who has played at least once a week for years, doesn't know exactly how to get to certain places.

Like the ship parts store at Grim Hex, or the Admin Office at Lorville. I have a general idea of where the admin office is, the main area where the habs are. But to actually get there I have to look for the signs that tell you where to go and follow them.

This would probably be one of those things that when people ask "why star citizen" and star citizen players cant really put their finger on a specific reason. This slight uncertainty on where to go, even though you been there many times before is that it is tricking your brain into making the experience feeling bigger than it really is.

Different desires i suppose.

I just want to get into my spaceship as fast as possible and do stuff when i'm playing a space game. Not spend 15 minutes trying to find my damn ship.

Ooooh, we have a new Jesus patch coming? The patch that will make everything better!

Its amazing how the faithful keep falling for this. Its always the next patch that will make everything better, and when it doesn't, the mental gymnastics kick in, and it becomes the next next patch, or the one after.
Have you seen me describe capacitors as a jesus patch ?
It's aiming at having a more interesting dogfight and will change heavily the way we do dogfight. For instance, no more holding the fire button forever for laser weapons. It's alpha, they can heavily change how a lot of things works and that's what they do in 3.14 for dogfight and scan/radar to make them more interesting.

Yes I knew about it and is part of what makes me like star citizen.

We'll see how they implement it and how punitive it is, but dying having a meaningful consequence is a good thing.

Did you think having to pay rebuys in Elite was bad? Especially back in like 2016 before it got to the point that credits dont really mean anything. Losing a fully A rated anaconda back then stung.

They are rebalancing every weapon, shield, and ship in the game. It is gonna be a mess, at least for a little while.

He is the CEO of a publicly traded company, and he (or the management board in general) decides on the operational matters. Shareholders can vote him out if they choose to, so he has to keep them happy to some extent, but at the same time they cannot directly involve themselves in everyday, or even some strategic decisions. His share is irrelevant here because a CEO does not need to be a shareholder - their powers are regulated by company bylaws and general legislation (in this case - in the UK).

When it comes to voting him out, his 32% shares give him a lot of power because others would have to form a coalition against him. Which may be difficult because it is dispersed:

And this is where it gets tricky. Yes, it was him, or the management board in general. But it does not mean that he can do whatever he wants and that he did it on the whim. The decision was probably made to balance the expectations of the investors and, more importantly, his legal duties. As a CEO, while he is autonomous, he has also fiduciary duty to the company. To the company, not the shareholders, as this is not the same. If he does not protect the long term financial interests of the company, he might be in trouble legally, so he may be practically unable to postpone a release of a game that is "good enough" to the next FY due to the risk to himself. Interestingly, if the shareholders decided to do something that would threaten the long term health of the company, his duty would be to resist, because, again, he is protecting the interests of the company, not of the shareholders. Now, one could argue that this release was not in the best interest of the company, but proving it before court would be tricky - the numbers are good and up until the next FY the game may be in a much better shape. We will see about the console launch. So far nobody has had any interest in going to court, I guess.

This actually happened to CDPR BTW - due to the botched launch of CP2077 they were sued in the US by a law firm specialising in these types of cases - representing a class of shareholders against management.

At CIG things are much simpler. All companies are private and major shareholders are also directors. They can do whatever the hell they want, including convoluted investment agreements and straight up pillaging of the companies, as long as everybody agrees. Plus, CIG have a network of entities in multiple jurisdictions, which gives them even more freedom to shift risk, tax obligations, shape transfer pricing etc.

And the best part of the deal? People who pay for the upkeep have basically no rights. They are not investors, they are not shareholders, they are dispersed and cannot be even bothered to try to attack the issue from the perspective of consumer rights, as a group.

BTW, Calders may hold around 15% of the shares but I bet my morning coffee that their actual power is disproportionally larger. A special class of shares, more voting rights, additional provisions etc. CIG was bankrupt before they came in, so their negotiating power was enourmous.
Nice explanation and well said. The differences between both companies are also astounding not only in their core business models but also in their governance and how that allows or hinders consumer abuse and unethical behaviour. No system is perfect but trying to equate or conflate both cases reeks of disingenuity. Or lack of awareness. Take your pick.
