The Definitive Stealth Guide!

Having said that, I did a small base once where there were about 24 guards because of dropship deliveries - it looked like a damn rave, and I did use the missiles in that one because they were all so closely clustered that when you took one down, about 5 others went into alert, and stealth in that situation was almost impossible.

So in those I have found that if you don't hang out to watch that the others will not have a fix on you after the shot lands. They will be on alert and likely come looking where the shot was heard from but they won't zerg-rush you. Thing is you have to be on the move the moment you let the shot go. Don't stick around to see if they died. Just get gone. I tend to go straight off the building I was on, out and swing around to a new one after each shot.

I've now knocked out a good number of clusters like that. Sometimes though I just go get the SRV because I don't want to be at it all night long.

I noticed a... special... way to alert NPCs today. Kind of stumbled upon it, you might say. If you jump from a high height and take a bit of fall damage as you land next to an NPC, they interpret that damage to you as an attack, and start searching for the perpetrator! Luckily they don't think you could be the perpetrator, as you are already the victim.

Just to add, I'm noticing all of my early followers are always there to comment on my new videos and it's really humbling to see these kind words every time I publish a new video. Since the Buur Pit featured my channel on Friday, my subs have literally doubled over a weekend (thanks, @Buur !!) and it's been overwhelming. But you were amongst the first few who jumped aboard and I'll not forget that :)

We can point people to you but ultimately quality content speaks for itself mate. Looking forward to more from you o7

Hey Ydiss, just wanted to add my thanks and support for this series, it's really opened up my fun with Odyssey over the past month!

Following your last video, yesterday I bought myself an Executioner rifle and paid a visit to a local base run by one of my enemy factions.
I'm hostile to them, so I landed a couple of km's out and drove in to the perimeter in the SRV, lights out (I don't think SRV headlights make a difference with your visibility, but it feels right to turn them off!)

Hopped around the roof-tops, sniping out a couple of guards on the way to the CMD building to disable the alarms. Clone the ID of a passing Grade 3 worker through the window on the way, and I'm in. Sneak into the security room, alarms off. I then practice my aim with the Executioner as I move from building to building, until I've cleared the whole base out.

I bring the SRV in to the base grounds and begin to loot the place at my leisure. My final stop is the PWR building to take the regulator. As I claim my final prize, a swarm of red blips appears on the scanner... scavvers! They surround the PWR building, sieging me in, and now I've really got to put my sniping skills to the test as my ammo is limited and there's no boxes in the building to refill 😬

I take out half of them, leaving four left just outside the main door. I chuck a grenade out to scatter them and run for it, making a bee-line for the SRV. I jump in, full power to shields and burn rubber as I hightail it out of there!

A great little adventure, lots of excitement, lots of lewt stolen, lots of new skills learned.

Thanks for the inspiration Ydiss! o7

I finally got my first "Live Odyssey" video guide completed and it's now available to view on Youtube, complete with a brand new intro/outro and improved audio recording. Most of the transcript is available in the description of the video but I'll add the key points here. I'll be adding to this series with a definitive infiltration guide to follow shortly and then deeper-dive guides into various settlement types and missions and even stealth-based combat and additional advance combat guides at a later date. And anything else I think might be useful (requests can be considered).

I hope you like it and find it useful! Here's the video:

This is the content, roughly transcribed with some parts not included:

One of the key skills in Odyssey, and one aspect I absolutely love about the expansion, is its stealth mechanics. This guide explains it all!

This is what you’ll learn:
  1. You’ll learn why stealth is important in Odyssey and why you need to use it (this is in the video only)
  2. You’ll get an understanding of the concepts and rules around how stealth and detection works
  3. You’ll also learn what you can do to avoid detection by NPCs.

The stealth mechanic follows this basic process:
  1. Detection (and how you should avoid it)
  2. Reaction (what happens when you're detected)
  3. Escalation or Resolution (what can happen beyond the reaction)
  4. Resetting (how you can evade aggressive NPCs to reset them and try again)
  • Always remember: If an NPC cannot see you, they will not react to you. If an NPC cannot see you, they may still be able to hear you. And how far away from an NPC you are matters.
  • Aggressive NPCs (for example scavengers) will react to you at the maximum visual range if they have line of sight to you. The range of this is around three circles on the radar in good light and close to two circles if dark and they’re using a flashlight, much less if not.
  • When you are not visibly breaking a law, non-aggressive NPCs will react to you at the minimum visual range (which can be gauged roughly by the red circle on the radar).
  • When you get within the red circle, guards will attempt to scan you for bounties or stolen/forbidden goods. When you get within the red circle from workers, they will greet you.
These are the things you are not allowed to do in any settlement:
  1. Attack someone
  2. Carry any weapon (unholstered)
  3. Steal any item
  4. Trespass into restricted areas
  5. Scan someone who has a bounty or use any of the illegal modes on your tools
  6. Use your cutter or activate any panels that will set off an alarm

  • If you wish to remain undetected, it's important that you do none of those actions in visible range of any NPC at a settlement.
  • If an NPC is aggressive towards you then they will continue to hunt you down until either of you die or you continuously remain out of their visual range for around 30 seconds or so. If you can remain hidden for long enough then they will cancel their search for you and return to their usual patrol route.
  • It's not allowed to carry any weapon so you need to holster these when they're not in use. When a non-aggressive NPC sees this then they will warn you and tell you to put it away. So long as you do this quickly enough, they will leave you alone. If you do not do this or if they spot you doing it again, they will immediately turn aggressive.
  • When a guard scans you, you must remain close to the guard to allow them to complete their scan otherwise they'll automatically attack you. Watch for the message on your HUD and listen out for the audible cues. If you have a bounty or if you are carrying a traceable stolen item, or if you're carrying a mission item intended to sabotage operations in anyway, they will turn aggressive and attack you.
  • If a worker spots you trespassing, they will warn you and if you exit the restricted area, they'll let you off with that warning. If you do not comply or if they see you committing any other visible crime then they'll turn aggressive immediately.
  • When a settlement NPC turns aggressive, they will shortly begin to radio for assistance. If they do this and you don’t stop them in time, and the settlement alarms are enabled, the alarms will sound and the settlement will attack you.
How do you avoid detection?
The basic approach you should always take is:
  1. Don't get seen (use the environment to hide behind and use the rooftops)
  2. Be as quiet as you can. Crouch or walk and try to avoid making too many sounds close to NPCS if you're doing something wrong!
  3. If you're carrying something you shouldn't, avoid guards at all costs.
  4. Stay behind any NPC if you wish to remain undetected. Stay crouched!
  5. Remember to disable alarms!
I'll be adding more related video links to this topic and keeping it updated as things progress!

The second video in this series is now published and is called The Definitive Guide to Infiltration:

Yep, my less reputable ALT just landed at a settlement that was a BGS target. Smiled and nodded at the guards, till I was able to get the settlement alarms turned off. Then the murdering started in earnest. So much murdering. Once all guards were dead (never even aggro'd one) the poor oblivious workers were overcharged to death or shot in the face as I ransacked the settlement taking the power regulator on my way out and everything else that wasn't glued down. That was actually really fun. I mean credit where it's due. That's involved and engrossing work and I was wrapped up in pulling it off the whole time.

I think it would be more challenging with better guards being more interested in the player when near building windows and important structures but it's pretty fun as is.

Hi stealthy CMDRs,

I need some advice on Covert Theft missions. I am still not fully aware of the 'rules of the game' at this stage - despite all the videos out there - and am doing really badly. So I have a few questions. I want to complete this without as much violence as possible - RP and all that.

The scenario:

  • First, the site I am targeting is a single building site - a biological facility with the HAB, RES and PWR all contained within a linear building structure (HAB at the start; science in the middle; PWR at the end);
  • At the entrance to the HAB, there's a control room that has 0-level access with the settlement alarms inside; I recall a video for a similar area where a CMDR got fried because they walked up the stairs when asked to stand still for a scan - looks like a similar area;
  • I cannot get past this point! Note that the PWR entrance is half-way up the building area - I am not even trying to go through the area on foot - I just cannot disable the alarms with an issue (see below);
  • THREE times I cloned a worker ID of L2; each time I had to bolt out before I'd even got to the alarms;
  • Realising that the alarms were in a L0 area, I thought that actually, target that first;
  • When I do, the guard the walks up and down the stairs and back to the alarm room - as SOON as I enter it (it's L0, remember), runs down to see what's happening. At this point I've watched them walk up and down several times - as soon as I enter without ID - in an L0 room they show up - even using an e-breach to break the settlement alarms.

Basically, I can't seem to complete this.

NOTE: I've only received a 250Cr bounty so far, survived and not abandoned the mission - but am close to doing so - yet this appears to be the easiest mission I've chosen for covert theft to date (the others didn't go too well). I've gone and paid the bounty off, in an effort to complete this. If I can't complete this, I may as well forget Terra engineer...

Here's the questions:

  1. If I get L1+ clearance (Clarence), will that stop the guard running down the stairs when I enter the L0 room with the settlement alarms in to disable the alarms?
  2. Assuming that if I have the correct clearance, that I'll be able to disable the alarms without an e-breach (last time since the door was L0 I used an e-breach - which took time - and hence why the guard almost fried me)?
  3. If anyone has any knowledge of this type of mission I'd be grateful since I am slowly but surely thinking that ANY covert mission is beyond my grasp.
Thanks in advance, o7 CMDRs.

Feeling a bit rubbish ATM regarding stealth missions. LOVE shooting people in the back of the head - but want to master the "next level".

I’ve given up on RP, it’s almost impossible with Odyssey and even less so with the buggy missions.

OK, I understand - gave up on RP when I needed OPs and SMCs lol.

However, RP aside, I still need to figure out the rules - which to my non-gamer mind are not getting filled in...

Trying (and FAILING) to understand covert theft missions at this (what looks to be an easy) point...

+1

Mods, can you pin this thread?

It actually informs people of what to do (except in my circumstance where I am so rubbish...)

OK tried again.

Cloned an L2 worker. Waited for the guard to go up the stairs - 'sneaked' (or not) into the L0 room where the alarm is, guard rushes downstairs and it all goes pear-shaped.

Survived, but HOW THE HECK DO YOU DO THESE MISSIONS?

Apologies for SHOUTING.

About to go on a long drive and then will be watching a certain major sporting event at the pub so I doubt I'll be about for the rest of the day :D I will read and reply when I can though!

If I recall the type of site correctly, the nook with the alarms is a restricted area. This has nothing to do with the door access level, and will cause NPCs to come and investigate if they hear or see you moving around there. In addition that nook may or may not have a ceiling, which means the guard can see into it from the level above. The alarm panel itself probably requires level 1 access to manipulate.

You want to control the response when you do encounter that guard. There are a few possible options: 1) sneak so well he never spots you in the restricted area. 2) Obey him carefully so he deescalates the situation (i.e. walk in as brazen as you like, activate the panel, but walk out - no weapon - and let him aim his gun at you until he decides you've complied). 3) take him out.

It may help to ensure that he scans you - naturally before you steal an ID, perhaps even his - so he doesn't deviate from his route before you enter the restricted area. You get only one chance to deescalate with any given NPC; any further infraction is met with "you were warned" level hostility.

It's useful to know there's no such thing as an Lx "room". There are doors that require Lx access to open from outside, and there are restricted areas. These are distinct, but tend to coincide at secured sites like alarms control, power centre, or habitation quarters. This is why it is safe to walk in when an NPC opens the door to areas like industrial production; you're permitted to be there, just not open the door.

Distraction is also a possible option to avoid the guard interfering, e.g. if a shield grenade were to go off in the deeper corridor and he doesn't see you when he goes to investigate. I haven't seen that done successfully.

Key point here, though; you've described the guard comes (running or not). You haven't described when or how things went pear shaped.

All of ^^^ is good advice. Recently I've been doing most things by:
1) Tailgating NPCs. Especially fun if you can entice a guard to come scan you in front of a door that opens because they have access permission even when you don't ...
2) Running in and out of restricted areas - as stated above, the NPCs won't be happy, but if you are fast they will forgive you.

(Both have mostly been me doing pickup / delivery missions rather than more nefarious things, but I also used similar techniques when doing covert thefts)

1. Why do you care if he runs down? Unless you're in a restricted area, it doesn't matter if they see you. It doesn't matter if you have enough clearance for the area. All that matters is whether you are carrying something illegal, or have a cloned ID (or a bounty on your head). If they scan you, they'll notice that and aggro. So....don't carry ebreaches while casing the joint, and dump your cloned ID if you're about to get scanned. You'll have to get another later.
2. No, you need at least level 2 clearance to disable alarms without an e breach. Usually you can get that from someone nearby (carefully), sneak in and disable the alarms. Once they are disabled, it doesn't matter what you do, the mission will still be 'covert'. You can kill whoever you need to kill after that.

You really should re-watch Ydiss' videos. It's all explained quite clearly there. I've been able to complete many covert missions since. (Yes, I still mess up and have to run occasionally -- or kill everyone which I prefer not to do).

For the record, I'm a slow-reaction type of guy, and I'm over 70 now, so I feel that any player should be able to do these if I can do them. Just learn the rules. Good luck!

I'm guessing someone replied (I've got 10 minutes spare so thought I'd give it a shot).

That's the gauntlet agri building. It's notoriously difficult so don't feel bad if you're struggling. I failed a ton there until I learned it. I'll be doing a proper guide on it when I launch my Stealth Club group in the near future.

In terms of the alarms panel, just run to it and disable them. Let the guard see you do it if you need to. Then purge your clearance.

Or, let the guard scan you, clone them back and then go do the alarms.

If it's an issue with a restricted area, I've not seen a scenario where you can't get through without getting seen. Is the guard not patrolling? I've seen this sometimes and it does make it hard.

I'd not use an ebreach, guards will see it if they scan you. Cloning is the way. You just sometimes need to re clone again after dropping for scans.

You're correct - the area is level 0, the alarm - you need access.

I've tried two different methods:

  1. No level access: use an e-breach; this I think I should have done again, differently. The first time I tried, I had no access, went in, used an e-breach and waited for it to work - next time, I'll apply it THEN leave before the guard gets there, then when the guard goes back, nip in and disable; I think that is the best bet (possibly);
  2. Using level access: as soon as I go in the guard runs down and checks me out, then everything goes pear-shaped (still survived to tell the tale)

This small room had '0' on the door - meaning it had no level access. It was not a restricted access area because I could enter with level 0/no permissions.

Distraction is also a possible option to avoid the guard interfering, e.g. if a shield grenade were to go off in the deeper corridor and he doesn't see you when he goes to investigate. I haven't seen that done successfully.

Mmm. Didn't know about the distraction technique - worth remembering for next time!

'Things went pear shaped' (explanation): base went nuts. People tried to shoot me. I lived for another day, but am increasingly getting fed up with Covert Theft missions (the RNG has given me this one so far and for some reason all the others have been military grade bases....)
