Game Discussions The No Man's Sky Thread

NMS and Elite are so often held up as rivals by players and commentators but a lot of the HG team, including Sean Murray, are fans of Elite. There are obvious nods to it in NMS. The ranks on the pop-up bounty missions are taken directly from Elite (Mostly Harmless, Dangerous, Elite, etc). In one of the updates (I forget which) they improved the ships cockpit scanner (which previously was pretty useless) and decided to make it work the same way as Elite's. Also when you use the pulse drive in NMS you get a little 4-second countdown the same as when using the FSD in Elite.

The core exploration model is identical to elite (next system out of infinite, tag things and leave your name on it). Space stations are in spirit coriolis stations, and they have pretty much the same station services with much more ontop. Even a little port to dock in. There's also a system map and galaxy map which function the same.

Yeah i noticed that last restart.. nms is an elite clone where the games overlap. And they didn't have to make coriolis stations with little ports to dock in, so definitely some references too.

These ugly blobs are supposed to be stars? I thought it was a graphic error.

I think the deep focus blurring that I applied to the photo, along with a filter, gave an incorrect impression. The starry skybox is now quite improved with stars being sharp and colorful, along with wisps of nebulosity between them. Here is a better shot:

Wake me up if any "new flight model" even comes close to ED's FA-Off mode and I'd be seriously interested.

I agree with the criticisms of the flight model. Honestly, there isn't one. Controlling your ship is little different than doing so in, say, "Asteroids" or some other arcade game. It is rudimentary at best. I don't expect any improvement either as NMS is not a sim but a game.

Does anyone have screenshots from a modded version of NMS that make the game look more realistic? I'm talking black space and a more "real" color palette.

On a related note, can a modded NMS client play online with unmodded clients, or do mods force you into solo mode?

I appreciate your honest answer, thank you.
The stars look much better here, but those cloudy objects look very artificial. As you say, NMS never wanted to be a sim, not even half a sim like ED. When I have the flight physics of ED in mind, it's not about the simulation aspect, it's about the fun of flying FA Off and the illusion of flying a spaceship that it gives. And I would probably miss that very quickly.
NMS and ED are such very very different games. So different that that I find comparing the two to be pointless, almost unhelpful. ymmv.

I die every time. Is there a way to start on a non lethal planet?

Play normal. Did a quick google and it was suggested that as well as keeping you on edge, survival also has a side effect of making the mat farming far more grindy (which it does)..creating a negative drag on the other aspects of the game. So the survial "feeling" might not be worth it given the cost to the rest of the game. If you play on normal, the starter sequence in no way will kill you, expect maybe if you don't get your scanner up and find some sodium in time. After the first 5 minutes all the survival stuff does is gently remind you its there. Doubly so after you go to your first station and buy up all the life support gels and ion batteries for a few thousand units.

I don't use mods, so I can't provide any screenshots. However, Nexus Mods has some screenshots of mods that change the skybox. Deep Space v2 seems to be the most popular (here). The only thing I would point out, though, is that most of these mods seem to be from pre-Prisms, so I am not sure if they still work as well as they did before HG revamped the skybox to make it much prettier.

From what I understand, mods are strictly client-side so they will not affect being able to play with others, albeit there might be some odd effects if one player had a mod but another doesn't. Found a graphic that explains how mods work:

I'm very tempted to give NMS another go. I own it on PS4 and played it for awhile before I hit that "I'm kinda bored" wall, but that was a couple years ago, and now I have a PC. The biggest thing that's tickling my interest is that supposedly NMS now supports cross-play, so I could in theory play along side my wife - me on my PC and her on our PS4!

If I do jump back in, it won't be until late summer / early Fall, as games tend to take a back seat for me during the warm summer months.

I'm very much liking the improvements made in these updates. For example, last time I tried the game I tried salvaging crashed ships, but the amount of cost it took to fix all the broken slots was more than it was worth. This time they found a good balance of time/resource/money expenditure. If you find a ship you like (I happened to like Artemis's ship, so I'm keeping it and calling it The Artemis) it's worth your while to fix it. Feels like an accomplishment, too, not too much like a chore.

And, of course, now you can up grade the slots and class of your ship, so really it just boils down to looks. Do you think that ship looks awesome, but it's Class C? Maybe it's cool enough to be worth the effort to fix up. Again, it feels like an accomplishment to make a ship your own.

Hope they let us do paint jobs eventually, or even tweak the look ;)

Anyone else a fan of permadeath? ;)

What I love about permadeath is that it only affects you. So simple things like increased fall damage, or reduce carrying capacity serve to make things a bit more difficult, but it's not like enemies do more damage or resources are harder to find. The galaxy is the same, it's just how you interact with it that's different. And for me, honestly, Permadeath has just the right amount of added difficulty, with the added incentive that dead is dead... which is always a plus (except if you end up eating it in a kind of way... which isn't impossible).

Mortality is the spice of life ;)

I'm also loving Drew Wagar's playthrough of the game. He chose a great time to get into it :)

I want to try permadeath once I finish the main campaign on my current "survival" playthrough. I get a perverse kick out of permadeath games. ☠️

I've been enjoying Wagar's playthroughs as well! I am glad to see he is having a good time with it!

Sometimes it's the little details that count. Last night I came across a crashed ship. I found the pilot standing next to it and talked to him, whereby I learned that he didn't know how to fix his ship. He pleaded with me to help. I agreed and headed off to gather some ferrite dust to make the metal plating I needed. But here's the thing: when I came back, I didn't find the little Gek where I left him, staring off into the distance in idle mode like so many other games would handle an NPC waiting for player interaction. Instead, I found him sitting on some wreckage, dejectedly staring at the ground while swinging his feet like an upset child. Somebody went the extra mile to program that. I have found such thoughtful little touches to be a rarity these days.

Happily, I fixed his ship. Here's a screenshot of me telling him he was good to go. Thumbs up, pal! :D

I have about 1200hrs in NMS and still having fun. I took a brief break to explore the madness known as Eve Online, but came back to NMS. I'm in the process of visiting each of the 256 galaxies, exploring as I go, placing a base in 1/5 of them.

Well that Drew Wager "tricked" me into buying NMS (he's having SO much fun!) on PC. I'll be saving it for a long, rainy day, as X4 is my current evening obsession, but I have it now.

Are the galaxies different from one another? I know it's kinda lame, but my goal is to find a relatively earth-like planet (weird alien planets are "weird") and settle down and play the game more as a Minecraft replacement rather than an Elite replacement. I'd love to find a system with a ELW and an airless moon, along with maybe a weird planet or two just for fun. If I can find this in galaxy one, then I have no need for galaxy 2-256.
