Odyssey Going Forwards

Thank you for your post, @David Braben, it means a lot. I expect some backfire from the console community, though, and I can't say I'd be happy in their position.

o7.
My only hope is that the game stays active on the console (Xbox) and PS4, so eventually we also can enjoy space legs. Iirc there was a Mac variant in the past.
I’ve got 2 accounts on the Xbox, one active, the other slumbering in newbie space.

Thank you very much @David Braben . One thing I would ask if you could please at some point try to pen down for the community your thoughts and hopes on where you would like to see Elite Dangerous progress over the next few years. There has been little communication from you on this and all there is to rely on is what you had said during the Kickstarter. Recently some of your CM's have gone on record saying certain things were not on the roadmap or even being considered at this time and that leaves a bad feeling with some considering the idea you presented before. Again, thank you for this update and hope to hear more from you in the near future.

So, when you are going to give us the ship interiors and lose that idiotic Armstrong moment?
To A: when they decide to implement it. Remember that "the other game", the one in perpetual alpha, has ten times the budget, and all it has to show for it is ship interiors. It is a huge undertaking.

As for Armstrong moments, I have a suggestion:
Use your srv and you can get really photogenic Armstrong moments.

Simple concept really is that if the foundations (base game) is unstable then anything built on that will also be unstable. That will include porting it to other platforms.
Thanks David for communicating this to the Community. Many unfortunately will still have unrealistic expectations but I thing the majority are appreciative of the work being done in Frontier.

Thank you for the update, @David Braben

I abandoned Odyssey last week and was facing the serious possibility of an end to my Elite journey, one that began almost four decades ago with your original game. Something I really don't want to happen, I might add.

Your comments are encouraging and it sounds like a solid approach to take. I now have some hope that I might be able to keep flying.

Good luck to the development team for the improvements.

When Odyssey was first announced for an early summer launch, I thought that was pretty bad timing. I and many I know tend to take a break during summer and even Fall (Frontier is in the northern hemisphere), saving long gaming sessions for the cold, dark winter months. Winter is especially a good time of year to play space games! But now I'm thinking it's quite fortunate that Odyssey launched when it did, because hopefully by the time winter rolls around again, it will be fixed enough that I and others will be interested in it once again.

Disclaimer - I haven't purchased Odyssey yet, so it's easier for me to be forgiving and patient. I'm also not tied to just one game.

ADDENDUM

Performance, smooth, "good" planetary tech (how terrain is drawn in as a pilot flies over it), and lighting are the three most "make or break" issues for me personally. It seems these are the issues likely to take the most time to be fixed.

Greetings Commanders.

With the release of Update 5 on 1st July plus a few smaller server updates since, and Update 6 currently in development, I wanted to take a moment of your time to talk about the next steps for Elite Dangerous.

We are aware and fully accept the frustration that many of our players have had with their experience of Elite Dangerous Odyssey. The community have spoken, we have heard the feedback clearly and we will act on that feedback.

As you may remember in our recent development article, the significant amount of updates and development effort that has been done to fix and improve issues since the launch of Odyssey has meant work on our console release has not progressed as quickly as we had hoped. What’s more, we can see that the strides we have made through the last five major updates are positive, but we must continue on with this progress to give the experience that you and we expect on PC.

With those things in mind, we have spent a lot of time discussing and re-evaluating our previous plans and we have made the decision to prioritise the core PC experience for Elite Dangerous. Ultimately, we believe it is right to focus our efforts on the core Elite Dangerous Odyssey experience for the platforms that we have released on, before opening up to more. We know that the work that we do to improve players’ experiences of Elite Dangerous Odyssey on PC will benefit other platforms in the future, but the dates and details of the console platforms are going to change. We do not want to rush into confirming any dates or changes this has on our console release, as we must remain fully focused on the core Elite experience. Only when we feel that the foundation of the PC release is solid, will we be able to re-lay our console roadmap on top.

Elite Dangerous Odyssey is an important step on a complicated journey, and we must get this right, before we can consider moving on to these new platforms.

So what does this actually mean for Elite Dangerous and Elite Dangerous Odyssey?

It means that we will see more game updates over the coming months. We will continue to work through Issue Tracker, fix bugs and improve performance, but we will also be able to explore and add additional features, content and improvements into the game.

We will continue to give open monthly development updates where we discuss WIP content, challenges, the issue tracker and more. We know that the previous levels of detail for the roadmap and developer update have not met expectations, but we are grateful for your patience while we shift and adjust plans, in the face of such clear feedback.

Please remember that our team here at Frontier are working hard to support the game and our community. Behind every bug fix, design decision and community post is a person who cares a lot about giving our players best possible experience. I would ask that everyone remains calm and respectful when sharing their thoughts and feedback.

We all have the same goal and we will get there, together. Please bear with us.

o7 Commanders.
I would ask for more specifics. So far, little has changed in terms of optimization. On my hardware (I7 6700HQ, GTX 1080, 32 GB, SSD) Odyssey is virtually unplayable on foot. In space I have 40-60 FPS (all details LOW, supersampling 0.65). On foot from 2 - 25 fps. Nothing is stable. It's not that I don't like Odyssey (although there is a lot to improve), but that it is unplayable for me. And I was playing Cyberpunk 2077 on the same computer. I am not interested in the road map now. I'd love to hear when you start improving your code optimization.

Thank you for taking the time to update us DB!
As a proud 84'er, I appreciate the effort that you and your team have put into this.
I KNOW that for you, ED is more than just another release for your company, it is something that you have a personal connection with - even longer than I have been playing!!
Keep the faith Boss.. the majority are still behind you!

Ultimately, we believe it is right to focus our efforts on the core Elite Dangerous Odyssey experience for the platforms that we have released on, before opening up to more.
I'm very happy to read this. It's just words right now, but if FD follow through on it then it is a much needed course correction away from a nasty software release policy that has infected Frontier since at least the early days of (released) Elite Dangerous. Do it, make it real, make it lasting corporate policy, and everything else will fall into place.

Engaging Cautious Optimism Drive.

Thanks David, I'm on Xbox but really glad to hear you're committed to sorting the PC side out first and that's totally understandable.. a lot of CMDRs will breathe a sigh of relief! Right, that fleet carrier isn't going to buy itself.. o7 CMDRs!

Well, we need (in addition to the bug fixes and updates / reversions)

Engineer blueprint balance pass
Human / Guardian / Thargoid tech balance pass
Unlocking levels balance pass
Powerplay Balance pass + update
Ship balance pass
EDO balance passes
Performance tweaks (like tweak it till the pips squeak tweaking)
Allow more ships in CQC (maybe Guardian stuff, extra arenas)
Look at piracy
Look at C+P
Maybe some FC polish

I'm sure there are more.

EDIT:

Superpower ranks and military careers
More space mission templates

Although I'm loathed to say it, comets.

Credit cost balance pass, especially between pre-Odyssey and Odyssey costs

Oh, and REDUCE THE GRIND. Pre-Odyssey and Odyssey.

I'm sick of the grind in Horizons and I don't want the worse grind there is in Odyssey. There are better ways to make games than just grind, grind, grind.

I thought you ended up buying it or having it bought for you? Or was I drunk?

Well, that was certainly everything I wanted to hear. Hope the console folks aren’t too annoyed - it’s ultimately going to be better for them, too, as a result of this. All of this being based of course on the assumption that everything in the OP is representative of a genuine intent and not just words.

Although a lot of us console plebs saw this coming, it still seems like a massive slap in the face. I don’t know why your team were telling us as early as last week that everything was still on track. Just be transparent. As soon as you know something, tell us. We keep taking you at your word and you keep throwing it back in our faces. The whole roadmap, the release dates, the planned content with no extra details, it’s all just a little disingenuous.

I’ve been playing since 2017, I’ve loved this game and had some great experiences. However, as a customer, I don’t feel like your company can be trusted and your integrity is questionable. Be open, be transparent, be honest. If you can’t do it, say that.
