Odyssey Going Forwards

You know Braben has no hand in Elite right?
Well he should have, seeing as he is the company boss. Or doesn't he really care now that he is a multimillionaire?

Would you rather they give you a steaming plate of hot garbage that is Odyssey? They can't make it run decently enough on PC, let alone how bad would it be on a last gen console?
I actually agree with this. I was hopefully of an Autumn release as promised, but this latest news is a slap in the face.
Yes I'd rather it be bug free for console.
What I don't want is another release date promised, which is then delayed yet again due to 'unforeseen circumstances'.

Even if Frontier do manage to pull off release for old gen consoles, it's probably not going to be until Spring next year at the very earliest, a whole year after pc release.
And because Frontier have not said that there will be new content for console release, it makes me think that we will only get what pc players have had for the past year. There will be no new gameplay, nothing new to discover, no new mission types, etc...

IMO Odyssey should have been bug/performance tested by company testers using 'in house' pc's on a variety of specs.
Then, and only then, should it have been released for both pc and console at the same time.

Instead they released it way too soon, got the pc users to bug test it for them and are now making console users wait at least a year later before we even get a sniff of it, that's assuming they manage to get it to work on old gen consoles, which I really hope they do.

As much as it’s nice to see that statement from Daddy B, it doesn’t look like consoles will see a release this generation. Most probably ps5/ series x/s sometime hopefully in 2022, after Odyssey finishes the current Beta and gets a full release on PC

Are you seriously trying to say that delays are bad?
No, I'm not. You might have me mixed up with someone else, I was responding to your comment about having to pick between delays and bugs.

If a product is buggy and unfinished, you delay it to fix those and finish it. Odyssey had delays, but was still buggy and unfinished, and it got pushed out anyway to meet the financial year deadline.

The problem is that the game is still having these issues despite the delays. Now that we're in this situation, delaying is the only option, and yet I don't think that time is the core problem here. If you delay and delay and there are still issues, it's problems with management.

Greetings Commanders.

With the release of Update 5 on 1st July plus a few smaller server updates since, and Update 6 currently in development, I wanted to take a moment of your time to talk about the next steps for Elite Dangerous.

We are aware and fully accept the frustration that many of our players have had with their experience of Elite Dangerous Odyssey. The community have spoken, we have heard the feedback clearly and we will act on that feedback.

As you may remember in our recent development article, the significant amount of updates and development effort that has been done to fix and improve issues since the launch of Odyssey has meant work on our console release has not progressed as quickly as we had hoped. What’s more, we can see that the strides we have made through the last five major updates are positive, but we must continue on with this progress to give the experience that you and we expect on PC.

With those things in mind, we have spent a lot of time discussing and re-evaluating our previous plans and we have made the decision to prioritise the core PC experience for Elite Dangerous. Ultimately, we believe it is right to focus our efforts on the core Elite Dangerous Odyssey experience for the platforms that we have released on, before opening up to more. We know that the work that we do to improve players’ experiences of Elite Dangerous Odyssey on PC will benefit other platforms in the future, but the dates and details of the console platforms are going to change. We do not want to rush into confirming any dates or changes this has on our console release, as we must remain fully focused on the core Elite experience. Only when we feel that the foundation of the PC release is solid, will we be able to re-lay our console roadmap on top.

Elite Dangerous Odyssey is an important step on a complicated journey, and we must get this right, before we can consider moving on to these new platforms.

So what does this actually mean for Elite Dangerous and Elite Dangerous Odyssey?

It means that we will see more game updates over the coming months. We will continue to work through Issue Tracker, fix bugs and improve performance, but we will also be able to explore and add additional features, content and improvements into the game.

We will continue to give open monthly development updates where we discuss WIP content, challenges, the issue tracker and more. We know that the previous levels of detail for the roadmap and developer update have not met expectations, but we are grateful for your patience while we shift and adjust plans, in the face of such clear feedback.

Please remember that our team here at Frontier are working hard to support the game and our community. Behind every bug fix, design decision and community post is a person who cares a lot about giving our players best possible experience. I would ask that everyone remains calm and respectful when sharing their thoughts and feedback.

We all have the same goal and we will get there, together. Please bear with us.

o7 Commanders.

While I do appreciate the fact you aren't throwing in the towel on Elite, I can't help but take a "If it happens it happens." approach after what happened with the dev update pre-patch 5.

Personally I could see this coming a mile off. As other contributors have so pertinently put it the QA tests that Microsoft and Sony must have put in place before and since the Cyberpunk fiasco would completely scupper any chance of Odyssey getting through those hoops. Personally I can play Odyssey on my computer but as others have said, in some sporadic situations my frames tank to below reasonable levels to play the game. I can only see this announcement as a plus for all. Before others jump on their high horses I also have a PS4 commander as well just not as well advanced as my PC one.

He didn't say that.
FDEV will fix the core game and then port the fixed game to the consoles.
Shows that FDEV learned that is better the delay and release something good, that release an unfinished product and try to fix on the fly.
Right decision.
It is the right decision to delay, but it's a vague definition of what fixing the core game means. Obviously, it'll be better to have a stable game to move over, but there's no real definition of what that means especially when he adds that they're going to use the time to add in other items that people want. Consoles are in limbo at the moment as to when/if the game will be fixed enough to be ported over.

Dear Mr Braben,

For Odyssey to be a potential success:
-Gameplay: it is very interesting as it is.
-Content (new arm, new ship, ...) This is the DNA of the game
-VR
-Ship Interior
-Lore (It was the strength of the game)
-In game Performance: 100+ fps with
-Base building
-Powerplay and BGS open only (to make war, you still have to see the enemies)
-FC: Social hub with mission board, seller, ... even if we have to buy these services, maintenance OFF, we need to play, not work for that. (+ real player economy)
-Support vessel (FC gameplay), what happen about it? gameplay with pnj possible? Currently One need, why not use the other two available slots?
-Pnj: rebalanced the salary to: only when used.
-STOP GRIND for ingineers and progress ...
-Complete translation of the game in the proposed languages
- ...

Surprise us! :)

And maybe we can still trust your studio.
You have 6 months.
Good luck

Hi David,

every decision like that is hard to make and you know ahead there will be some people disappointed. Nevertheless, in the long term I am sure this decision was a right one to make and I feel you are and have been for some time on the track to solve the situation. Thanks for letting us know ahead. Also big thanks to all the DEV teams for their dedication and huge amount of effort they put in. I am absolutely sure the console CMDRs will rather wait a little to receive a polished product than to get a faulty one too soon.

Keep rocking, and don't mind negative criticism. Unlike the constructive one, it only aims to hurt, not to help.

There are a lot of ED vets leaving because of Odyssey. Hopefully, this may inject some hope in those folks that we really need to stay engaged.

Good positive message. Fix the issues before moving on. Well done

This makes sense.

Make the PC work first. As long as it actually takes - not set to an arbitrary financial deadline. Let the developers breathe, be creative, and do their jobs. There is more to fix about Odyssey than just bugs or performance - the whole game design is shallow and stupid, and needs expanding substantially to be worth anything like the price tag you're asking for it. It's really not good value, even if it worked.

Then drop last gen consoles, and release E: D for current PS5 and Xbox Series S/X. Provide free upgrades (industry standard) for owners of previous console versions.

Finally, release Odyssey for those consoles.

Only way you can save this IMO. You have to pull a "No Man's Sky" with this, and that's going to be a long road and a hard slog. Not to put too fine a point on it, but you have a lot of ground to make up - both technically, and in terms of your customer's trust - which will translate over to your other games you have planned.

Thank you David, for this communication and your previous two Odyssey posts, They were much needed by the community. Also thanks to you for your original idea of Elite and your continued enthusiasm right up to the present with EDO, long may it continue. I have been an avid fan and player since 84*, and along with most in our community; 'Elite' remains a major 'factor' in my ever precious leisure time! o7

tl:dr - "Please fix Odyssey by overhauling large portions of the game and introducing entire expansion-packs worth of content in 6 months".

Please stop with these kinds of posts. They help nobody.
