Odyssey Going Forwards

Greetings Commanders.

With the release of Update 5 on 1st July plus a few smaller server updates since, and Update 6 currently in development, I wanted to take a moment of your time to talk about the next steps for Elite Dangerous.

We are aware and fully accept the frustration that many of our players have had with their experience of Elite Dangerous Odyssey. The community have spoken, we have heard the feedback clearly and we will act on that feedback.

As you may remember in our recent development article, the significant amount of updates and development effort that has been done to fix and improve issues since the launch of Odyssey has meant work on our console release has not progressed as quickly as we had hoped. What’s more, we can see that the strides we have made through the last five major updates are positive, but we must continue on with this progress to give the experience that you and we expect on PC.

With those things in mind, we have spent a lot of time discussing and re-evaluating our previous plans and we have made the decision to prioritise the core PC experience for Elite Dangerous. Ultimately, we believe it is right to focus our efforts on the core Elite Dangerous Odyssey experience for the platforms that we have released on, before opening up to more. We know that the work that we do to improve players’ experiences of Elite Dangerous Odyssey on PC will benefit other platforms in the future, but the dates and details of the console platforms are going to change. We do not want to rush into confirming any dates or changes this has on our console release, as we must remain fully focused on the core Elite experience. Only when we feel that the foundation of the PC release is solid, will we be able to re-lay our console roadmap on top.

Elite Dangerous Odyssey is an important step on a complicated journey, and we must get this right, before we can consider moving on to these new platforms.

So what does this actually mean for Elite Dangerous and Elite Dangerous Odyssey?

It means that we will see more game updates over the coming months. We will continue to work through Issue Tracker, fix bugs and improve performance, but we will also be able to explore and add additional features, content and improvements into the game.

We will continue to give open monthly development updates where we discuss WIP content, challenges, the issue tracker and more. We know that the previous levels of detail for the roadmap and developer update have not met expectations, but we are grateful for your patience while we shift and adjust plans, in the face of such clear feedback.

Please remember that our team here at Frontier are working hard to support the game and our community. Behind every bug fix, design decision and community post is a person who cares a lot about giving our players best possible experience. I would ask that everyone remains calm and respectful when sharing their thoughts and feedback.

We all have the same goal and we will get there, together. Please bear with us.

o7 Commanders.
Fully understand the desire to improve the underlying basis of the game, but it makes second class Elite players out of the current console players, even though it might eventually get released on next gen consoles. Very disappointed to be honest.

Well David....

Thank you for the next wall of text with lots of promises and no appologies....
Still no "Sorry to screwed you over and used you as beta testers letting you think you buy a finished product"...

Lets see how much your word is worth....
The word of you previous spokesmen and women were basically worthless...

Your ship is sinking and the rats are fleeing....

Very disappointed customer.

reading between the lines on this announcement i feel it is an acknowledgement from frontier that there are pretty serious issues with Odyssey that are going to take a lot of time and money to fix.

I do also have some concern for the console comrades that if the issues prove insurmountable that a console release may end up never happening, or at least be delayed until they can upgrade all users onto the new consoles.

This does also raise the question regarding the legacy horizons branch of the game. I presume this will stay live on pc for sometime longer than originally planned. I also wonder if we will see in a few months horizons tech being replaced on pc with the Odyssey tech, with console staying on legacy Horizons tech.

I understand the frustration, but it's better do fix something completely first and then release, that to release something unfinished.

As a console player I'm more than happy to wait as long as needs be, there was no way i was buying it on console after seeing the pc release and the issues many had and continue to have, we as gamers appreciate your honesty.07 legendary person :)

Hi.
Sorry if this has been asked before but what does this part of the statement mean
but the dates and details of the console platforms are going to change
Specifically around the details of the console platforms ? I'm not sure if it's a typo but my interpretation of that statement is that you are potentially looking at changing which "generation" of console the game will run on or am I wildly incorrect with this assumption ?

tl:dr - "Please fix Odyssey by overhauling large portions of the game and introducing entire expansion-packs worth of content in 6 months".

Please stop with these kinds of posts. They help nobody.
You mean the entire expansion pack's worth of content that was in Odyssey? Hm, wait.

Thank you for the update.
However, you still have a long, long road ahead of you to earn people's trust back after making this rushed money-grab release. We know that the company will never admit it, which hurts...but that is exactly what this release was. A money grab for your books.

As a console player this is very disappointing to hear, but not surprising. You really flew without a rebuy on this one and, well, the bill comes due. On the one hand, it's good to acknowledge - albeit in janky PR terms - you royally messed up. On the other hand, it's just more PR talk of 'new path forward' and 'focusing on your feedback', etc, etc, etc.

Yeah, uh-huh. Well, hopefully the PC version turns out ok eventually and consoles see you catch up with the rest of the market sometime in the next decade. It's a tremendously wasted opportunity to grow on console - especially next-gen - but that's your call and it'll either bite you in the remlok or we'll al be singing your praises years from now. I know where I'm betting my credits.

On the bright side, I can uninstall, knowing nothing new is coming for quite some time and maybe that'll help on your end, too. It's a bit like CQC and Powerplay, right? If we're not playing it, you won't develop it. If you lose most of the console population, maybe it'll expedite your work. Certainly seems to be the pitch today, anyways. It was always going to be a bad situation, regardless...can't go back in time before you released an alpha product and can't expect you to abandon that product to do the work on the base game that should have been done in (checks notes) 2018 when you said you would.

Hard to not be salty about it all, but there it is. Don't have to make anymore noise about VR, interiors, or even expanding base features like exploration and passengers.
None of that matters when you're on the platform left behind for the foreseeable future.

o7 Commanders. I understand, us console players want the best product you con produce. We know you guys will achieve this eventually. Thank you for your efforts thus far and keep up the good work. Hopefully release will be sooner than later next year but we’ll see. Thanks.

There;s an old saying 'paper does not refuse ink' and 'actions speak louder than words' Frontier would do well to understand these..

Now with all the acknowledgment of how bad Odyssey really is by Frontier, will the Steam description be lowered to 'beta product' and will refunds be honoured?

I'm happy to see that you steered the wheel in the good direction! I think that's the best decision for the current situation. Looking forward to hear more details about it.
