Odyssey Going Forwards

I really can’t see any of us console players getting it at all 😢
I am really worried for original consoles as I can't see it running without a severe downgrade.. and the graphics aren't exactly top notch as it is! Let's hope they use this time to magic some ingenious solution for optimising, that's what David built his original reputation on, if he can pull it off again it might be ok

Greetings Commanders.

With the release of Update 5 on 1st July plus a few smaller server updates since, and Update 6 currently in development, I wanted to take a moment of your time to talk about the next steps for Elite Dangerous.

We are aware and fully accept the frustration that many of our players have had with their experience of Elite Dangerous Odyssey. The community have spoken, we have heard the feedback clearly and we will act on that feedback.

As you may remember in our recent development article, the significant amount of updates and development effort that has been done to fix and improve issues since the launch of Odyssey has meant work on our console release has not progressed as quickly as we had hoped. What’s more, we can see that the strides we have made through the last five major updates are positive, but we must continue on with this progress to give the experience that you and we expect on PC.

With those things in mind, we have spent a lot of time discussing and re-evaluating our previous plans and we have made the decision to prioritise the core PC experience for Elite Dangerous. Ultimately, we believe it is right to focus our efforts on the core Elite Dangerous Odyssey experience for the platforms that we have released on, before opening up to more. We know that the work that we do to improve players’ experiences of Elite Dangerous Odyssey on PC will benefit other platforms in the future, but the dates and details of the console platforms are going to change. We do not want to rush into confirming any dates or changes this has on our console release, as we must remain fully focused on the core Elite experience. Only when we feel that the foundation of the PC release is solid, will we be able to re-lay our console roadmap on top.

Elite Dangerous Odyssey is an important step on a complicated journey, and we must get this right, before we can consider moving on to these new platforms.

So what does this actually mean for Elite Dangerous and Elite Dangerous Odyssey?

It means that we will see more game updates over the coming months. We will continue to work through Issue Tracker, fix bugs and improve performance, but we will also be able to explore and add additional features, content and improvements into the game.

We will continue to give open monthly development updates where we discuss WIP content, challenges, the issue tracker and more. We know that the previous levels of detail for the roadmap and developer update have not met expectations, but we are grateful for your patience while we shift and adjust plans, in the face of such clear feedback.

Please remember that our team here at Frontier are working hard to support the game and our community. Behind every bug fix, design decision and community post is a person who cares a lot about giving our players best possible experience. I would ask that everyone remains calm and respectful when sharing their thoughts and feedback.

We all have the same goal and we will get there, together. Please bear with us.

o7 Commanders.
Concentrating on PC is the best decision ! Further bug fixes, new content and features, that was what where missing! Thanks for the update.

Appreciate the unexpected update but some comments from me:

Is this the first confirmation of patch 6? I haven't been following any of the streams

Where have we heard that before?

Makes sense to fix the product that people have paid for rather than chasing a new revenue stream. It is a pity that whomever signed off Odyssey for release didn't have the respect for customers to come clean in advance.

This could be intriguing and hints towards something longer term. That could be the last flicker of optimism in me though.

Presumably the data-mined stuff?

I wouldn't say the update and roadmap didn't meet expectations. It exactly matched what I expected, just not what I hoped for. I am not optimistic that we will ever get anything like the kickstarter developer updates where Michael Brookes would pen something on a Friday afternoon, adding some concept art, screenshots of prototyping underway or whatever. They would probably do more for playerbase morale than you probably realise.

The Community Management team are doing as best as they can do with all the constraints that are imposed on them, and they have my gratitude.

Maybe let us know what the goal is then? It is very hard for a PC player to be enthused about the console launch so throw them a bone of what the long term holds for them.

While it's most likely as disappointing for you as it is for console players (I have a few friends on console who I was excited on behalf of), I agree with the decision taken here as well as the rationale behind it. Best of luck to all developers working hard behind the scenes. Thank you.

Ok, ill believe it when i see it.
Honestly Fdev has soiled a lot of their credibility, and no amount of words will change that. The fact that you are hear at least interacting is a good sign, but a road sign saying clear roads ahead that leads to a cliff does little good.

I hope you guys get it working, because i really do enjoy the game. By no means does this bring you outta the dog house, but at least you are making efforts, so thanks for that friend.

Good luck, and hopefully odyssey will be worth playing soon.

It's a wise decision even if a pity for the console guys. But then, two EDOcalypses would help nobody.

That said, I'm actually enjoying EDO in VR for as long as my physical abilities allow me to (ASW and below all the time, 1hr max) and have to admit that apart from the debatable major design decision in this area, VR has not been a step child when it comes to bug fixes so far. In fact, you fixed a whole lot of evil glitches (including ship interiors, but the "raw" version of sorts, with no way to get out again) by now and didn't mention it in the update notes even. Overall performance still not good unfortunately, but I'll remedy that with raw horsepower soon. Beyond looks pale in comparison IMHO. If it just were more fluid.

O7,
The Lawful

So basically ....you said nothing except that you will fix stuff. -.-
-What about ship interoirs
-Better FPS mission
-Long grind for materials
-Fleet carriers and their future
-Thargoids ?
-Atmosphere planets (with trees and stuff)
  • More and new ships ?
  • Base building ?

"Developed from the ground-up for VR." "No VR at launch." "No plans to produce VR for Odyssey"

VR has always been an afterthought at Frontier. Even Horizons was only optimized to a certain degree, and then the sole VR developer left the company taking with him the only VR headset they had. Elite is not a popular VR game because they tried hard and succeeded, but because flying in space is popular no matter how broken the experience (Star Citizen, point in case). Frontier only implemented VR in the first place because it was handy and easily done at the time, but once the VR developer left all VR landed in the trash bin.

Yeah. That's realistic I think.

Dude if they either had the manpower or the will to go for any of these, the current issues were basically not existant, because they were already fixed...
Please do not make them open even more bugfests ... the current one is more than enough

Quite often, when something gets patched, something else gets out of whack.

Isn't it rather crucial to have some idea of the effects and possible outcomes when changing code?

Elite Dangerous will never reach its full glorious potential unless there are devs who really understand the code and game and are able to make it more predictable and stable.

Symptomatic relief is short-sited.

Please invest in better documenting the code.

Thank you.

As a console player I am very disappointed with this. I hope when Odyssey eventually comes out for consoles the price reflects the fact it will likely be a 12-18 month old expansion.

If you are gonna treat us as a lower class of player and lower priority of platform then it is only fair to reflect that lack of commitment to us in the pricing of the game.
