Odyssey Going Forwards

Why shouldn't you?
This isn't the type of statement you can really go back on. Do you think they'll change tack and focus on console now and leave PC behind? Not likely is it?

Why not? They've done it several times in the past. Words don't really carry much weight where Frontier are concerned. History has unfortunately proven that time & again.

Trust is earned, not given or assumed. And when it's lost, it takes twice as much effort to win it back.

But not through words. 🤷‍♀️

Be skeptical not cynical.

Be mindful of their past indiscretions (not just Odyssey), but leave the door slightly open for them to surprise you.

I think it's a massive leap to expect them to go into landable earth likes or gas giant atmos while they are still working on improving PC and haven't launched the last expansion on consoles yet.
Were either of those "Kickstarter promises"? They sound more like long-term aspirations. In fact, after eight years I think all the actual promises have been met, or exceeded. Certainly no 2013-era pledgers have grounds to ask for their money back!

I don't know anyone of our backers in my squadron. Yes, they are somewhat disenchanted about EDO, but they still either play it or saying: "Hey, I had much fun in the past! It was more than worth the money. Let's sit and wait what's to come."

i really want to believe you, but something tells me that nothing will really change

if you really wanted to show us that you understand the issue, first step would be to admit that you rushed the release
Do you seriously think Braben would put out that statement, give the current atmosphere, and not follow through?

This statement IS them showing they understand the issue. Admitting they rushed it is something personal you want for your own satisfaction so you can sit there and be smug.
This decision to stay PC focused makes total sense and is the best path forward for Odyssey(and therefore us).
You should admit that you don't really understand that.

to pay big money for
Sorry I had to laugh at that one. Big money.

I remember the Ferrari 458 (which I'm told is a tad more expensive than Odyssey I'm lead to believe) had issues with the glue on it's rear end which caused some of them to catch fire. Ferrari sorted the issue (consider that an update) and the company is doing fine.

When you're spending £170,000 on a car for it to have faults from the factory, then you can complain about paying big money.

Greetings Commanders.

With the release of Update 5 on 1st July plus a few smaller server updates since, and Update 6 currently in development, I wanted to take a moment of your time to talk about the next steps for Elite Dangerous.

We are aware and fully accept the frustration that many of our players have had with their experience of Elite Dangerous Odyssey. The community have spoken, we have heard the feedback clearly and we will act on that feedback.

As you may remember in our recent development article, the significant amount of updates and development effort that has been done to fix and improve issues since the launch of Odyssey has meant work on our console release has not progressed as quickly as we had hoped. What’s more, we can see that the strides we have made through the last five major updates are positive, but we must continue on with this progress to give the experience that you and we expect on PC.

With those things in mind, we have spent a lot of time discussing and re-evaluating our previous plans and we have made the decision to prioritise the core PC experience for Elite Dangerous. Ultimately, we believe it is right to focus our efforts on the core Elite Dangerous Odyssey experience for the platforms that we have released on, before opening up to more. We know that the work that we do to improve players’ experiences of Elite Dangerous Odyssey on PC will benefit other platforms in the future, but the dates and details of the console platforms are going to change. We do not want to rush into confirming any dates or changes this has on our console release, as we must remain fully focused on the core Elite experience. Only when we feel that the foundation of the PC release is solid, will we be able to re-lay our console roadmap on top.

Elite Dangerous Odyssey is an important step on a complicated journey, and we must get this right, before we can consider moving on to these new platforms.

So what does this actually mean for Elite Dangerous and Elite Dangerous Odyssey?

It means that we will see more game updates over the coming months. We will continue to work through Issue Tracker, fix bugs and improve performance, but we will also be able to explore and add additional features, content and improvements into the game.

We will continue to give open monthly development updates where we discuss WIP content, challenges, the issue tracker and more. We know that the previous levels of detail for the roadmap and developer update have not met expectations, but we are grateful for your patience while we shift and adjust plans, in the face of such clear feedback.

Please remember that our team here at Frontier are working hard to support the game and our community. Behind every bug fix, design decision and community post is a person who cares a lot about giving our players best possible experience. I would ask that everyone remains calm and respectful when sharing their thoughts and feedback.

We all have the same goal and we will get there, together. Please bear with us.

o7 Commanders.
Thank you for addressing the current state of the game, can't wait to hear about the new features and improvements :)

Do you seriously think Braben would put out that statement, give the current atmosphere, and not follow through?

It has been known to happen, so yes. I think they'd say anything at this point. What matters isn't what they say - but what they follow through with, as you say.

This statement IS them showing they understand the issue.

Hopefully.

Admitting they rushed it is something personal you want for your own satisfaction so you can sit there and be smug.

I think there's been a tacit admission of that anyway.

This decision to stay PC focused makes total sense and is the best path forward for Odyssey(and therefore us).

Agreed.

You should admit that you don't really understand that.

That's pure assumption on your part, and a) not nice and b) the two don't correlate. Just because someone has a different POV to you on it doesn't mean they don't understand it. 🤷‍♀️

Well that's just your take on it. So you'll just have to sit back and enjoy the ride? In anticipation that they don't follow through so you can pounce.
Just so you know. Odyssey might never be perfect (well it won't be - no game is), it might never have smooth frame-rates throughout. But that STILL doesn't mean they didn't follow through and focus on PC first before releasing on console.

Trust is earned, not given or assumed. And when it's lost, it takes twice as much effort to win it back.

But not through words. 🤷‍♀️
Sometimes words are all you have to get your trust back.
I don't think Frontier are in a position now to make statements like this and not back them up. Also I think there is a reason that Braben posted this and not one of the CM's.
Cynicism doesn't help the cause. Ride this out and see where it goes. You give up too easy.

There ya go. That's more like it.

In fact, after eight years I think all the actual promises have been met, or exceeded. Certainly no 2013-era pledgers have grounds to ask for their money back!

cough offline mode
cough DDF involvement post-release

As for "grounds to ask for money back" - many tried. But were told 'no', because we had already played the alpha and premium beta.

Yes and I can only assume that based on the content of the reply. If they do understand it, then they weren't giving off any indications to that effect.

When you port a game to another platform you must have something that works as intended first.
With this in mind FDEV decision is the most logical one to make. It benefits PC players but benefits console players too.

At the same time this decision clearly shows that the release of Odissey on Pc in the timeline they decided was something too much for Fdev to handle. They released it broken, and to fix it they have to stop working on the ports.

I'm more interested in what they add to Odyssey than any fixes they do to an FPS I was never even slightly interested in playing to begin with. 🤷‍♀️

E: D was never a combat only game. I have 7 accounts on two platforms, and they're all at least single Elite in something, and double in most. Combat stays at Harmless for all of them.

That's what I'm taking away from Mr Braben's words. That's what I'm holding him and the company to. Let's see if they mean it this time.

Sometimes words are all you have to get your trust back.

It's not going to work this time. Too many untruths and back-pedalling over the years that I bought into (often with real money, backed £750 on Kickstarter and many hundreds more since.). Words need to be backed up with actions. Right now, they're just words, and I'll treat them accordingly.

I don't think Frontier are in a position now to make statements like this and not back them up. Also I think there is a reason that Braben posted this and not one of the CM's.

lol.

You really have no idea about me to say I "give up too easy".

This fine, but I think at this point heaping praise for a post like this is counterproductive. It's just a post. I'll heap praise when I see the results.

Big money is a relative term. £35 is big money if your main source of income is a paper round. Not so much when you're able to offer your guests £10,000 cigars after dinner.

But sure, lets say it's not. Would you like to buy some magic beans from me for £35?

You should admit that you don't really understand that.

To answer your first question ... They have already done so. At that time, using a PR specialist claiming "there are only problems with SOME soundcards and our game". You should probably invest some time in researching the "fun" GameTek had with trusting in Frontier Developments' quality control. Did they ever completely manage to FIX "First Encounters", or was that too broken from the outset?

Are you serious for real? It's Bethesda anyway! ;)

Yeah, the Starfield-trailer LOOKS nice, but...it's just a trailer.
Same goes with EA and MassEffect 4. The first trailer was released and the hype-train steamrolled all over the net!
Hopefully frontier gets it together, otherwise what other option can you come up with?
