Odyssey Going Forwards

Greetings Commanders.

.

As you may remember in our recent development article, the significant amount of updates and development effort that has been done to fix and improve issues since the launch of Odyssey has meant work on our console release has not progressed as quickly as we had hoped. What’s more, we can see that the strides we have made through the last five major updates are positive, but we must continue on with this progress to give the experience that you and we expect on PC.

.
Cause and effect reversed?
Why have there been so many bugs since the release that make the game unplayable to this day? Answer: Because it is not ready. You knew that for sure. Now do you want to excuse the delayed release of console by saying that you haven't done your job?

It's management speak for "if I don't keep up the party line I'm out of a job" - how to spew out words with practically zero content.

With all due respect, this seems similar to what, in some circles, is known as the "Chutzpa Defense". You don't get to be the "hero" for making a good call (as this is) to try to mitigate a situation when you, in fact, are the one who made the bad call (as you did) to release Odyssey in the state it was in.

That you seem shocked that so much time in effort is having to be spent making the game functional simply to the level it was pre-Odyssey comes across as both insulting and demeaning at the same time.

To recap:
  1. You were told the game wasn't ready in Alpha.
  2. You released the game anyway.
  3. Pushing back the console release is the right call.
  4. It's your fault we're in this situation to begin with.

Greetings Commanders.

With the release of Update 5 on 1st July plus a few smaller server updates since, and Update 6 currently in development, I wanted to take a moment of your time to talk about the next steps for Elite Dangerous.

We are aware and fully accept the frustration that many of our players have had with their experience of Elite Dangerous Odyssey. The community have spoken, we have heard the feedback clearly and we will act on that feedback.

With those things in mind, we have spent a lot of time discussing and re-evaluating our previous plans and we have made the decision to prioritise the core PC experience for Elite Dangerous. Ultimately, we believe it is right to focus our efforts on the core Elite Dangerous Odyssey experience for the platforms that we have released on, before opening up to more. We know that the work that we do to improve players’ experiences of Elite Dangerous Odyssey on PC will benefit other platforms in the future, but the dates and details of the console platforms are going to change. We do not want to rush into confirming any dates or changes this has on our console release, as we must remain fully focused on the core Elite experience. Only when we feel that the foundation of the PC release is solid, will we be able to re-lay our console roadmap on top.

Elite Dangerous Odyssey is an important step on a complicated journey, and we must get this right, before we can consider moving on to these new platforms.

So what does this actually mean for Elite Dangerous and Elite Dangerous Odyssey?

It means that we will see more game updates over the coming months. We will continue to work through Issue Tracker, fix bugs and improve performance, but we will also be able to explore and add additional features, content and improvements into the game.

We will continue to give open monthly development updates where we discuss WIP content, challenges, the issue tracker and more. We know that the previous levels of detail for the roadmap and developer update have not met expectations, but we are grateful for your patience while we shift and adjust plans, in the face of such clear feedback.

Please remember that our team here at Frontier are working hard to support the game and our community. Behind every bug fix, design decision and community post is a person who cares a lot about giving our players best possible experience. I would ask that everyone remains calm and respectful when sharing their thoughts and feedback.

We all have the same goal and we will get there, together. Please bear with us.

o7 Commanders.
Best possible experience? You mean nerfing mining with nullified double, triple and quadripple hotspots and then also introducing a demand system which is flawed because it creates a rat race to sell ans commanders are abundant and smart to figure where to sell, even worse bombing void opals and their price, best possible experience... no clues to darkwheel or raxxla no exciting leads..nothing

So much this. Idk why people are apparently actually clapping irl to congratulate FDev for committing to fixing something THEY broke in the first place. That's what they SHOULD be doing. We shouldn't applaud it like they are going above and beyond.

Because they could have ignored it and left us in the cold like their original plan was, and it wouldn't have been the first time! 😅
Yeah, we had to accustom to low standards! 😅

The positive thing about Odyssey's odyssey is that now they know there is a limit on how badly they can screw up things

This is my IMHO, based on an analysis of how the developers feel about Elite Dangerous Odyssey and the gaming community of the Elite Dangerous universe. And I guess - this post will be deleted because there is no praise and defiramb in it. Because there is criticism in this post.

At the moment, Elite Dangerous Odyssey is a base with many bugs that make it impossible to fully play. Elite Dangerous Odyssey is in the same state as pre-alpha, but not fully playable.

The further fate of Elite Dangerous Odyssey depends on the benefits received. And at the moment, judging by what the developers have done with the game and how the developers relate to the gaming community, one can draw conclusions and assume the future fate of this game. It's not long to wait until 2024, but is there any point in investing resources in a failed project? To be honest, throughout the entire existence of Elite Dangerous, the developers have always treated this game with disdain (the game is full of bugs) and the community of players (only promises)

The potential of the game (or demo version of the prealf) is HUGE, but no one has a desire to invest labor and resources, because it is more profitable to make a profit quickly and with the least cost of labor and resources - this is a business and nothing personal.

All of the above is my IMHO and I do not exclude that soon Elite Dangerous Odyssey will finally take off to the stars. However, the probability of such an event is 0.1%.

As my late grandmother used to say: Expectation and hope
the mother of fools, and the mother loves her children.

This sounds like what's going on with console regardless 🤷‍♂️

I prefer to decided what I like for myself. Fdev keeps trying to tell us what we will and won't like too, it's not working out for them either.
The problem is, that besides the raw gameplay and bugs, were you could have a different opinion, it CAN'T run on consoles right now, there no debate about what you would prefer or not, it's just not anywere close to the point where it could be ported to consoles, and they can't give you a timeline, because at the moment they have no idea if they can manage to get it to that point (and that's the true reason why they decided to keep working on the pc version, instead of leaving it broken to work on consoles. there wasn't the ground for that)

PS: For a marketing aspect instead, they already wasted Odyssey's wind forever on PC releasing it in alpha state, they can't afford to do the same on consoles.

If they optimized specifically for console, wouldn't it make it run better on PC by default? I don't need you to tell me my opinion any more than fdev needs to tell me my opinion. I'm not sure why it's so important to change my mind about anything. It's not going to happen

Sure, but you can't really do it if you don't have an already solid ground to begin with. My point is not changing your mind, my point is about telling you that there wasn't actually a choice
