Never seen so many contradictions in one post. If your wild guess that "they are only reacting out of financial motivation" was even half true, there would have been much easier ways to squeeze the last coin out of this community.

there is an actual financial impact to this botched release and the ongoing negative player sentiment is actually influencing not just stock prices but future revenue from a console release. Not that the company is only motivated by money, that's obviously not true because yes, they skip out on many ways to bleed the playerbase ..but this is money they spent already that they depended on a certain % of return for their investment that they're not getting.

This is why they are being as active in fixing odyssey as they are and why the ceo is making statements. If that revenue stream wasn't at risk ...this would be just like any of the previous releases with long periods of incremental tiny fixes before a near complete abandon of the new feature ....ostensibly for the next new feature to be worked on

We're seeing as much activity as we are now simply because of how much it has impacted the bottom line. Not because they're concerned about what it means for the game. They've already invested the money in the release, they can't simply abandon it without taking even more of a loss. So they'll try and salvage as much as they can and turn the player sentiment around to do so.

But that's obviously a hard sell for them to make ...lots of platitudes about transparency but still failing to deliver. That's why it will be interesting to see what's after the console release. I'd say it's a 50/50 chance at nothing.

I'll just point out that, as usual, the worst "toxicity" I see, is from the self appointed positivity police -- I've seen so many great communites be murdered by the harassment and suppression coming from those types.
Somehow, I doubt the "self appointed positivity police", "white knights", or whatever label you throw out for people who disagree with you, will have much impact on the community, much less "murder" by "harassment" or "suppression". But A+ for Hyperbole!

It’ll all be fine

Now don't deflect, this is exactly what you accuse FDev of when you say: "they're reacting out of financial motivation alone". And now you quickly backpedal and suddenly don't want to know anything about it anymore?
reacting, ...not acting. The reaction to odyssey is what i said was financially motivated. You implied they could bleed the playerbase in other ways so that wasn't true.. but i'm not talking about their activity prior to the release in terms of the activity that has followed this one.

Fixing Odyssey will require FDev to spend a lot of money up front with no guarantee of return on investment. If the Steam reviews stay in the 30% Positive range no one who hasn't already purchased Odyssey will touch it at 40$. So FDev is looking at large'ish expenses and reduced sales of the expansion in the medium term. When to call it quits?

I am perfectly fine with people disagreeing with me - the people in question tend to be less live and let live, and don't underestimate what they can do (EDIT: ...just in making less evangelical people feel unwelcome, alone...).

This makes more sense than the initial statement you made. Yes, of course everyone should be able to post their opinions, provided that they are not abusive. It shouldn't be expected, however, that everyone will appreciate or agree with what is said.

So you mean they are acting out of a kind of self-defence, have I understood that correctly now? Of course, this is something that could be speculated about endlessly, since it is just as difficult to prove as it is to disprove.

considering the almost certain motivation for going ahead with the release as it was done, and then the waiting for all of the negative events to have impacted not just sales, but getting media attention and impacting stock prices. ..that pushes the motivation of all of this "roadmap" and apology letters and more transparency into the realm of financial self defense than what we would see normally with a buggy release or botched features (which we get in every release to varying degrees)

is it impossible to prove or disprove? sure, in as far as the motivation of anyone is impossible to 100% prove without admission. But this quacks and looks really close to a duck. Could be a platypus. But it's probably a duck.

Here's hoping you'll never have to have one of the sort. :)
There are much worse ways to go than "death by positivity".

Now, "death by suppression"... is a much different story. As far as I can tell, looking at the forums and other media, we are a long way from that.

Depends on what: "positivity" means to you.

Which is my real friend, when I get a delusion that I can fly, and want to jump off a building? -The smiling sycophant who eggs me on, or the killjoy who tries to talk sense into me? :7

Ok, I've spammed this thread more than enough, by now. tries to put restrainer on typing fingers :p
