I really have no idea what gamers need to have a roadmap for to play a game. I've been playing games for 40 years totally wrong I guess. I was NOT entertained in many occasions for many reason. I never ever was NOT entertained because I did not have a Roadmap.
I suspect it's not so much about the contents of the roadmap as a need for reassurance that Frontier intends to continue to develop Elite Dangerous. (Same with a lot of the requests for "better communication")
We are at the moment at an unusual state in terms of the game development.
- before ED released, we knew that they intended to release it
- during ED 1.0, we knew that Horizons was coming
- during Horizons, we knew that more Horizons was coming
- towards the end of Horizons we were told Beyond was coming
- towards the end of Beyond we were told they'd started work on Odyssey
...so there has always previously been a commitment to release "another major version" in future. No details about what it was, necessarily, just that there'd be one.
For people who basically enjoy Elite - problems with Odyssey aside - the fact that it's game-as-a-service and therefore could be shut down is a worry. Frontier always before had a commitment to keep developing it ... what they're going to develop next isn't really so important as the fact that there will be something, and therefore the game will continue to exist.
So the current roadmap saying
- step 1: fix Odyssey
- step 2: console release
...isn't sufficient, it runs out too soon ... so people want reassurance that there is going to
be a step 3 - and the more details given about content and timescale, the more convincing the reassurance - because so long as Frontier are paying developers to do more than bug fixes, it's obvious that they have a long-term commitment to keeping the servers running too.
The counter to that is that any announcement of "what comes after Odyssey" is going to be met by a massive backlash from the
other side of the players who are still upset about Odyssey, so I can understand why Frontier are holding off on saying anything there until Odyssey is working better. (Which I think
broadly comes down to "can they fix performance?")
