ANNOUNCEMENT Odyssey: Update on VR and Ship Interiors

Same, i have ironed my mind and my brain in practising VR for hours.
They should have been put an advertisement on a VR option like " beware, this could make you sick, enable it at your own risk ".
Enabling VR in Odyssey is not that difficult : very basically just putting the hud into the free cam mode and walk with an xbox pad OR if you have rudders you can use them for walking ( it also removes motion sickness in this case ).
If i was skilled i would make a mod to enable hud on free cam and perhaps some basic ship interior by editing vessel models and adding a basic corridor from cockpit to stairs ( but no animated door sadly ), just for the purpose to show that it is possible to do without a lot of effort.
Software development - it's so simple the forum could do it!

Man, you know where culling is really working well right now? The Steam discussion threads. They have been crazy busy removing responses to their patch posts.

Wow.

Yes simple as the guys at HG have done it, and some ONE modder has done too to some flat screens games that were not even "Made for VR", just like Outer wilds for example as a great space exploration sim game.
Sorry, comparing what modders can do, with what development teams are allowed to do, is unrealistic.
Imagine a Modder had bolted on an FPS to horizons and released it as Odyssey. It could be full of bugs, riddled with performance problems and yet there would be a portion of the community who still choose to use it because it meets their individual requirements.

Because as i stated before , i'm not skilled enough, are you blind ?
So it's not simple then.

If you have not the necessary knowledge, no.
And , this knowledge is not hard to have, but it needs time to learn for the one that is motivated enough.( that wants to learn )

Okay.

I'm sure the devs could add VR first person, but it would take development time and effort. What it is NOT is "just putting the hud into the free cam mode" etc.

I'm honestly curious. What differs First-Person-"headlook" from SRV-"headlook" or Ship-"headlook", technically? I can't wrap my head around that. So technically it SHOULD be possible, because "headlook" does exist already. 🤷‍♀️

It's a paid DLC, dubbed the "New Era" by Frontier, who ended up putting the main game into maintenance mode for years in order to focus all development on it. It's a bit unfortunate that the end result of this is that we can only expect simple things to be added. Nothing too difficult, or even roughly as difficult as was done previously.
Yeah this is what makes me annoyed too.

I would say what they have added already, on the scale they have added, is not simple by any means. And saying the knowledge to add VR on foot properly ( not as a mod that is half baked ) is simple to get is simply not true. Development is way harder than the average forum warrior thinks it is, and game development for the PC platform with it’s myriad of configurations, is an extra layer of difficult. Yeah Odyssey launched very badly and way too soon, but there is a lack of credit given for what they have achieved. I just hope they do build on it more than they have in the past.

We're talking about two different things. The correct way to do VR first person would be to add VR in the first person mode, ie we would have specific first person movement mechanics, functionality, item interaction, controls etc all working exactly as they do now in 2d, but with the addition of VR. This is possible of course it is, it would need to be developed though (assuming they never started it) so that all the functionality hud movement mechanics etc worked correctly. Its not just a case of switching on VR, unlike say a 3rd person camera view.

What people seem to want in lieu of that development effort is some fantasy "just add the hud to freecam, it's simple". But just because freecam works in VR, it's not first person movement, mechanics, controls etc. And how WOULD the hud work, other menus, radials etc. Absolutely possible to do it, of course, but it would take time.

That's all.

Freecam with a hud isn't a VR version of the likely quite complex first person code in 2d.

And that's exactly the caveat, what "many" people don't get right. FP-VR doesn't need "proper" FP-movement. "Movement" is literally moving the FP-camera to a new position, like in a SRV but without a rendered cockpit. And "interacting with environment" isn't really an issue either. Why? Because, right now, you can lock-on targets with a movement of your head only and "lock target ahead". I'm doing that all the time during ship-pvp or gathering materials. There is no difference between targeting via headlook or centering your view above the target with a mouse-sweep in 2D.

Sure, it WOULD be nice to have "full motion control" everywhere, but that's a whole other story. I'm sticking to KISS (Keep It Simple, Sweetheart). I just suggest, that FDev should stick to already implemented features instead of "reinventing" the whole VR thing. So, yes! Just place a HUD onto our FOV and finish the last 95% of FP-VR ability what is already in-game.
