Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

Ah, i see, you can't help yourself.

Sounds like you are perfectly suited to Star Citizen.

Ive been a CR Fanboy since I played Wing Commander 1.

Ive attended 2 CitizenCons. So yea... ;)

Looking to build a vacation home near or on Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri but I REFUSE to buy any land that does not have Fiber Optic Access. A local COOP Electric offers Fiber Optic internet and I just reminded myself that I have to go there to review their Optic access to the lake area.

Causal lurkers who are reading this... want "to care" why it is taking so long. Squadron 42 is a MASSIVE draw on resources.

Obviously its going to slow down the development of the Persistent Universe.

Squadron 42 has approximatly 300+ Devs plus drawing on resources from its offices around the world to get completed.

Im just glad CIG is finishing this game that Frontiers abandoned for its gamers.

Just to clarify; ED offline mode was never going to be a SQ42. It was simply going to be the same game but not needing to be online at all, so you would play solo on a laptop anywhere similar to the original game and Frontier or most 1980-90's videogames. They decided that to build the game to function the way they wanted that it was too much effort to build two versions, because the stellar forge, Mission data and BGS were all running on servers designed to serve thousands of players at once. Even if they decided to build the solo only offline mode, they could have done it in a rudimentary way, essentially making the galaxy static and removing BGS from consideration and only building the mission system. By any fair estimate they could have done this if they wanted and done it in much less than 8 years LOL, because they did it for the previous versions of the game.

So yes, FD changed this and probably should have announced it earlier. But that was done about 20 months into development and they haven't looked back at that decision since.

Your comparison is not apples to apples.

Fair point... But as someone who has bought and sold stocks for decades... private ownerships is much different than public ownership in terms of thousands and possibly millions of shareholders demanding a profit.
There can be differences between private and public ownership of shares but operationally it is the same.

And shareholders are concerned about share price, not necessarily about profit. Many companies have gone public and bled money for years as they built up.

And thousands of individual shareholders don't really concern a company, it's the ones that have large percent of shares like institutional investors or in FD case, Tencent for example. They can marshall their shares to win board seats and such, individual investors not so much (although they can vote for institutional investor backed boardmembers, etc.).

In any event, FD is not a one game company. Their games are all profitable. The reputational hit and issues with ED are obviously a strong focus for them, but in the long run a diversified company will drop products that aren't profitable. Where I work we have created and abandoned products and bought companies and trimmed their product lines for years. It's a part of coporate life.

SC on the other hand, has no release product and only two products under development, both dependent upon the same technology back-end.

So... They abandoned a project in your words that was a magnitude easier to create versus the massive Squadron 42 campaign episodes ... fair enough.

Im glad you are now enlightened as to amount of resources SQ 42 requires.

Fair enough. :)

Allegedly. CIG like to say that but it's not like SQ42 needs server meshing, or servers. Just another excuse for the constant manure coming out their mouths wrt anything SQ42.
It's going to fun regurgitating these posts when SQ 42 releases. Just as fun as regurgitating the original posts when Odyssey was announced. :)

No, I was just pointing out your comparison wasn't really logical.
I didn't like WC at all after playing Elite. I found the animations dumb sprite garbage and the storyline didn't do anything for me. And CR got kicked out of game dev and lost the company he got lucky enough to co-found because he was a horrible manager and "ideas guy". He then went for Hollywood where his real ambitions still lie and got kicked out [edit out words: of their] for some not so good business dealings and his space epic was trashed by reviewers.

I've never been a fan. But obviously a lot of folks don't know his full history or don't care because he has the audacity to dream with their money.

Drop-in co-op for Sq42 was promised, yes? They might need servers... but yeah, not the huge instancing meshing they are dreaming about that is impossible in a twitch game due to physics.

Lol, no. (Why do you think the off line mode was some kind of campaign similar to SQ42?). They realised they had to chop a feature (the ability to play off line), and took the hit.

The pay off was that they could still have the Background Sim shared by all players. (Y'know the bit that manages the supply/demand of the markets and status of interacting factions in each of the absurd number of inhabited solar systems).

The moment to do your joy wiggle over this would probably when CIG either:

A) Finally launch the much delayed SQ42

or

B) Add something resembling the promised 'quanta' background sim. Which despite nearly a decade of big talk, is still nowhere to be seen.

Are you referring to that huge wave of ED Refugees playing the "dream" daily now? I have to admit... they are a force to be reckoned with in the 'Verse. AWESOME pilots! Satisfying seeing a lot of players now with CMDR in front of their handles. :)

Before you go all waxing lyrical once again about the recent trickle of folks discovering SC for the first time like this is some form of troll-points scoring match...there have always been ED commanders in SC and vice versa, cross pollination at it's best. Most are like me and like both games for different reasons...only ill informed and contradictory forum/reddit trolls of the lowest order attempt to portray there being some great divide in player loyalties...they're video games, both in the same genre and to me, as a regular player of both games since 2015, they've always complimented eachother by providing different takes on the same theme.

So far since you've dive bombed into this thread all spitting fire and informing us of current Bitcoin prices, you haven't written much worth talking about...2014 backer hanging about in Arena Commander seemingly wary about entering the PU? Maybe if you had actually ventured into the PU since you backed the project, you'd understand a bit more and perhaps have something interesting to talk about..

I'm calling Bollox. ;)
