Game Discussions The No Man's Sky Thread

This ridiculous game is too darn addictive! Last time I played (a couple years ago), I would skip most planets after a quick peek because I found most of them too boring and samey. This time around, it's the opposite - I'm finding myself not progressing far in the story because every system has at least one planet that I want to thoroughly explore and classify. Not only that, I've found multiple planets that are base-worthy. So I'm populating space with a bunch of "camps" - summer camp, winter camp, mining camps, cool alien coolness camp, etc. That and I'm creating my own Stargate network so I can quickly revisit all these cool planets. I'm still multiple jumps from my first black hole, but at this rate it'll be Christmas before I make it there! Who knows if I'll ever make it to the center of the galaxy or not...

I guess someday I'll have exhausted all the novelty, but so far I continue to find new things to see and do with every jump. This game has come a LONG way since I last played!

I named this planet "Emil's Sorrow" (not my first planet like this, so I'll need a few more "Emil's [something]" names). Even so, each one is very unique despite each have Emils running rolling around.
That's a great screenshot! Coincidentally, I came across those balls the other night as I was doing yet another flora survey for the mission giver (for 200 tons of frigate fuel which I could use), this time on a planet with acid rainstorms. I didn't see any of those big walker types, though.

Having said that, I remain cautiously optimistic that FDev will turn this gross misstep around given enough time--and it will take time and a lot more of it than most people suspect (i.e., this won't be properly fixed by autumn.) If they can fix the myriad technical issues of the expansion, then they just need to start adding content other than the FPS nonsense no one wanted. It is possible. Given any other dev, I would be confident that it would happen, too. But seeing that FDev's special ability is being able to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory...

(I can't overstate the special type of incompetence it takes to take a game at its peak popularity and blow it up almost overnight 🤯 )

Yeah. I have a 3-4k hours in elite so i also hope they can do it. Its a little dismaying given their history of fixing patches even in calm weather, and the all round challenges they would have had to bring only that in the first place. While its not in them to do it based on past performance, its the first time they've also ackowledged criticism from the top, so maybe that's enough to trigger some change.

I think we would all like to be happy with elite, full of compliments and buying lots of arx in gratitude, but we need something to base that on first.

Anyway. Back to different space legs. We're all playing space legs here.. hehehe

Beach front property on the edge of a desert - the game might not consider this a paradise planet, but I do!

How does HDR work in this game? I tried it on my TV, but it totally messed up the colors, changing blue skies to pink for example. Thing is, my TV showed an actual HDR signal being sent to it, so it's not fake HDR, but it does seem to be broken HDR.

Is north not north? I flew north only to watch the sun set to the north as if it were west. I know NMS uses "geocentric" (rotating skybox) fake solar systems, but I still expected the poles to be actual poles, and for the sun to rise in the east and set in the west. What's going on here?

I would give up my entire save if Hello Games would give us proper heliocentric solar systems... This is probably my biggest complaint with NMS, even more than the simplistic flight model and "cartoon" graphics.

I enjoy NMS the most when I ignore details like this. Its not the game for accurate models at any level.

Fired this up for the 1st time since last Oct.
New game.
Rookie mistake, found derelict/broken freighter on planet. Claimed it. Couldn't find my starter fighter afterwards.
Tried to recall it.
Forgot to fill up the thrusters fuel tank, cannot recall it.
Primary repairs done on the freighter, time to offload it onto some unsuspecting NPC.

But it has longitude, latitude, and a compass. What's the point of these if the sun sets wherever it wants to?

And how does the sun work in this game? Does it literally orbit ME the player? And if so, how does it determine where to rise and set on a planet?

I think of the sun as a glowy special effect on the artistic background and not as a massive hydrogen ball that other system bodies orbit. The planets we run around on don't even rotate on an axis. There is no axis, there is no sun.

You seem to forget that I'm an immersionist, even if it's pseudo immersion. I cannot pretend there is no sun :p

Something that often gets forgotten about NMS, or perhaps is just not common knowledge particularly among newer players, is that in its own lore NMS is not taking place in a real universe. It's a simulation controlled by a rogue AI. Things like the 'Glitched planets' and 'boundary failures' are clues to this. Lore-wise it's a clever way for HG to do pretty much any crazy thing they want and not have to worry about realism.

A lot of the lore originates from the Waking Titan ARG event in 2017 which was a (typically) bonkers idea from HG. A real world global event that, at first, appeared it had absolutely no connection to NMS at all. It was an incredible event to be a part of at the time.

It's an interesting thing to catch up on if you play NMS and don't know about Waking Titan.

I forgot about this. But yeah, the glitches and boundaries have a practical purpose that slipped my mind. The nonsense from the Atlas and Artemis quests is more than just flavor text. Thanks for the reminder!

There's no spoon either.

Hm, nexus missions are not for me.
Almost completed one, life got in the way, when I restarted the game found myself spawned in the anomoly, have to basically restart the mission again.

The latest episode of Bad Batch reminded me of a NMS planet. Then I thought back to episodes of Clone Wars and even Revenge of the Sith and realized NMS does a pretty good job at making these very strange Star Wars like planets.

It does leave me wishing there were planets with a full, proper, "lost in the trees" forest in NMS, but I'm guessing that would kill performance. Someday we'll have a NMS-like game that implements RDR2 graphics, and then I'll never leave the holodeck ever again!

I have to wonder if frigate mission failures are hardcoded to fail after 2-3 successful missions.
No matter the difficulty level of mission, my frigate has now returned damaged 3 times after 2 successful missions. 1 star missions failing.
I remember this happening last time I played as well.

What is the rating of the fleet you sent? If your fleet rating is +2 stars over the difficulty, you should never have damage. I play it safe and only send 5 star fleets on every mission.

The frigate is exceptional at industrial, weak at exploration, but I didn't expect it to fail a 1 star "balanced" mission.
More digital dice rolling, I suppose.

Another factor in the die roll is how many dice. Any fleet less than 3 frigates have much greater chance of damage. Use 3 or more frigates and 5 star fleet rating = weighted dice for no damage.
