Elite Dangerous: Odyssey Update 6

For comparison. Quality vs Performance.

My concluding thoughts are that 1) in 4k FSR works really well, and 2) this scene should run at a billion FPS without any downscaling whatsoever. :p

no problem at all!

it was a retrieval mission, the POI spawned properly, the planet looked fantastic on the way down (the LOD transitions are so much improved!) the bad guys spawned appropriately (and appropriately reacted to multiple dumbfire missile launches), but the mission item either 1) failed to spawn or (more likely) 2) spawned under the terrain geometry.

And I will echo many other posters and say that having a real human active on the update thread is a fantastic touch and very much appreciated!

BEAUTIFUL!! Thank you so, so much!!! This is incredible help!

I am quite confused - getting 60fps in concourse but struggling to maintain 30 at settlements....Luckily I play ED for the space not the legs so guess skipping that content for now

After update 6, the situation with performance in conflict zones has not changed for the better, unfortunately. If I have 45+ FPS at the station, then in conflict zones there is a drop to 10 FPS... everything is fine on empty planets - 70 FPS, but the conflict zones leave much to be desired (GTX 1660super, i7 3770 and 24 GB RAM)

@sallymorganmoore

Just wanted to give you some feedback on this latest update.

First off, thank you for all the hard work on your part, as well as the rest of the CM team, and the devs for these updates.

The addition of AMD FSR is nice, but since my monitor is 1080p, the increase in performance comes at a pretty significant loss of visual quality. At 1080p, it's quite pixelated, even at the highest quality setting. I'll run it this way for now however, as I'm testing to see if I can run using my Horizons graphics settings with FSR. Still looking forward to not having to use a workaround for improved performance. I know you guys are still hard at work on this!

Unfortunately, I'm getting random drops in FPS in settlements. Not all of them though and it's very random. Watching my CPU and GPU usage, I've noticed there's a massive dip in GPU usage for no reason when the frame drops happen. It will just randomly drop into the single digit frames for anywhere from a few seconds to 20 and my GPU usage will dip into the teens or less.

Regarding the AI, was it intentional that all NPC guards and scavengers no longer use their torches? Just took a settlement raid and it was at night. I couldn't see anything, but all the scavengers saw me and started opening up on me. These missions are going to be a lot harder when it's dark if you don't have night vision on your suit, which I don't yet. I had to resort to using the SRV because I just couldn't see where the NPCs were at.

Finally, I'm currently "stuck" in the game. I was leaving a settlement and prepping to jump to a new system. My FSD charged up fully but nothing happened. Tried again, same thing. So I tried jumping to supercruise, same thing. Just sits at 100% charged. Figured there could be server issues so I attempted to exit the game. Menu won't open. So I'm going to have to task kill it to get out.

What a super write up! Really appreciated. I'm sorry to hear you're stuck!! It does sound close to the old server hiccups but let's keep an eye on it :)

You guys love to start off sounding like you're giving good news and then hit me in the face with a frying pan of flip side, dontcha?

Thanks for the thoughts on this! I can grab 'em, take 'em, and feed 'em back.
To be fair Sally, that's what this update did to me today. I was all oohing and aaaahhhing over the new graphics upgrades, I even looped back around to marvel at a solar flare with parallax to other coronal events, before heading to map a new waterworld, then I got hit in the face with a planet when I couldn't disengage supercruise to map it.

Can we please get a menu option to disable press-and-hold actions? This is widely disliked by many people, and there are medical reasons behind it in some cases.

As a sometime sufferer of RSI holding rather than tapping is much harder on the limbs over time, and picking stuff up is something the game expects you to do a lot.

Illegal interactions (Hacking, taking stolen/illegal items, pressing illegal consoles) now require a press and hold for 1 second to avoid accidental criminal activity.
OK I respect the idea behind this, but I think it does more harm than good. Stealing needs to be able to be done QUICKLY in the brief moment when someone’s back is turned. This “fix” needs to be an optional thing, otherwise it ruins stealth/thief type gameplay.

FSR is a step back for me. I had better results with native upscaling and CAS, both visually and in terms of performance. The sharpness that CAS added to the ship HUD in update 5 is gone now; text is blurry again, with no option to go back to the previous setting.

The random fps drops that occur at settlements haven't been fixed. Upscaling does not mitigate them.

Any plans to fix the prison ships so you can fly your own ship out of them after being arrested?
Had no idea that was a thing - I've repeatedly been sent to the brig (because I'm awful at FPS) and each time I have the option via a screen beforehand to keep the ship with me (at no cost, as long as it wasn't destroyed. Which has happened too. Like I said, I'm not very good.)

Also @sallymorganmoore (hope you're tucked up and not seeing this until tomorrow) please add another voice to the overwhelming choir asking for the removal of "Illegal interactions (Hacking, taking stolen/illegal items, pressing illegal consoles) now require a press and hold for 1 second to avoid accidental criminal activity."

Compare what can be compared. Horizon uses a rendering process from the 2000's Odyssey uses a new PBR rendering.
It's like comparing an Austin mini from the 60's to this one from today, it has nothing to do with it.

We have old potatos pc (for me) and we want to play new games... that's all. I firstly thanks the team to make it "more" possible.

I compare it with what Fdev stated during alpha. The performance was not indicative of the final product ( it is ) and that at release we could expect near horizon-like performance ( we don't have it )
