Update 6 your thoughts?

So what are your thoughts on Update 6? what's still broken, what do love or hate. Personally after just a few minutes I can see a major improvement but time will tell..
Lets see...
First off... I was buying the Prismatics I just unlocked via the new buy to inventory feature (which excited me). Then discovered only 1 of each size showed up, even though I bought about 4-5 of each. So there went 500-1BIL down the tubes.

Then there was this mission to wipe out the occupants of a settlement, which apparently got alerted and almost destroyed my ship as I approached, so I beat a hasty retreat. Then I returned to a fully active base with no occupants and this is my mission update screen:

So I looted the base, which took freakin forever. Every dataport I got was 2-5 minutes of download times (pretty sure they upped the data download times by A LOT). Looting a cabinet, which should be a 2 second affair, now took upwards of 30 seconds per cabinet, depending on how full it was. I did take the power regulator with zero repercussions, so bonus there... but dang, what a snooze fest. Whomever decided they need to slow down gameplay over at FDEV, really needs to understand that this was already the slowest gameplay ever and it needed adjustment in the opposite direction, not drag it out even more.

Anyhow, play wise the game was 40% / 60% for me (fun vs doing nothing but staring at my screen) before update 6, it is now about 10% / 90% and that is a bit to little fun from a game for me. I hope there is an emergency patch to roll some of these changes back out immediately.

I literally just spent 45 minutes looting an empty base, where it took less time (half?) previously to wipe the entire base of NPC's and loot it. Not to mention this base was 120K from the star, so imagine my disappointment upon final arrival and getting the above handed to me... and not being able to complete the mission, which I only took because I really needed the reward, which I now won't get... Bah. :(

I eagerly await new gameplay videos to watch. Of particular interest is planetary tech from about 1 to 2 km above the surface while flying over at high speed. Texture resolution, LOD-popping, terrain morphing vs draw distance, and shadows are particulars that I hope will eventually be improved to Horizons quality. Oh, and of course performance!
In case you didn't see it yesterday:

In the end I boost in a straight line toward a 'mini-volcano' for a bit. Shadows on low though, but you can judge the rest I suppose.

You used to be able to power up a site after you killed the scavengers. so you could download data ports, charge you suit, I went to a site and put the regulator in the drawer and hit the activate button, nothing happed, so I powered down and retrieved my regulator and left. Why do they do this.

I'm in the middle of one of those missions now, going as normal for me. (and currently downloading smear campaigns as I type!)

Few bits I've noticed - I FINALLY found some crashed Eagles for power regulators. First one, the regulator housing was already opened, and nothing - NOTHING - at the site at all. Second one, both wings were embedded in the ground, so couldn't access them. In both cases though, I noticed relogging didn't make things reappear. Hmmm.

Also, my suit radar seems to have gotten a massive downgrade. In a settlement (retrieval mission) I got an alert for a security scan, I heard the guard say stop, they walked right up to me, and wasn't until midway through the scan that their arrow appeared.

Planets look a lot better by default, my FPS has taken a bit of a hit in response, though - 5900X / RTX3080. Shouldn't be happening there, think I'll need to tweak settings.

Bug I noticed is that after targeting something with a shield in-ship or SRV, the shield strength remains even after I've deselected them. Weird seeing a planet with 100% shield strength.

Odyssey missions more broken than before.. I am at the point I will just list some of them:

Unlootable settlements.. E doesn't work.
Complete white out Hab buildings.. NPC's entirely black heads.
Double spawns of distress signals.. unlootable everything, uncompletable.

Logged in after patch and game looked terrible.. had to disable AMD option and set supersampling back to 1.5.

Amazing accomplishment Frontier, there is such a thing called testing and quality control. You need to consider doing that.

I think the framerates are still a disaster. They seem to be even lower than before in scenes that already run okay. Haven't tested the trickier scenes yet but dont expect too much. Also the hight map generated "mountains" still look all too rounded and cant be compared to Horizon ones.

AI now appear to have super senses.

Was at a small mining complex, pitch black; saw a sharp shooter walking around one of the platforms about one story in the air; I was crouched at the top of the power building (diagonally opposite to where they were WRT the site). As they rounded the corner and were facing me they went ballistic and about 5 other AI in the site headed for me. Which was odd because previously alerts usually had to be within range of the scanner; the scavenger was no where near even the edge of my scanner.

SRV was parked 400m outside of the site; while I was dealing with the onslaught, some other AI went and blew it up.

So AI definitely seems have gone back to the flock-and-swarm that we had at the start of the Alpha.

Anyone noticed a difference with the AI, especially WRT combat?

That's actually great that they go after your SRV, I think. Now 400m, that sounds a little far...

I think my frames went down too. I can't find a good mix of settings. VR medium is smooth but it's super blurry, everything else chugs. I'm not very happy. I like the big red scan warning.

Yeah, a previous mission to the same site had them running out when I was within 120m of the base in the SRV; I'd got out at that point and had to swat three of them.

So next time I got the same mission (kill scavengers) to the same site, I made sure to park the SRV way outside to make sure I didn't alert them. Which didn't work in the end as outlined in the previous post.

One other thing: they were all red on my SRV scanner before I got to the settlement - however, they used to be yellow and go red when engaged. I don't see anything in the patch notes about this (and should they be in there anyway?). Something's definitely changed.

  • I mainly did some CZ in settlements I also visited before the update. New planet colours look better versus previous. However, that was only a couple planets.
  • New (?) setting for controlling interpolation for ground as you approach improved things versus what I had set before. Increasing that setting had no effect on framerates (although I have not cranked it to max), but cleaned up the worst looking part I had under previous settings.
  • My resolution is relatively low (1280x760 ?) and so the FSR only offered limited benefits. Versus 1.0x supersampling, using the ultra FSR improved framerates to 55-60 (cap) in concourses from 45, a smaller benefit in CZ. However, it fuzzes up the ship HUD, so I turned it off.
  • The only mission I tried was a crash site salvage. The site spawned, which is much better than before.
If I was playing the same style as in the first weeks of alpha - just using Apex and Frontline, the FSR performance boost is basically costless. But the fuzzy HUD is annoying if I’m flying.

I started Odyssey mid June and this was happening even then. They always went for a nearby SRV and attacked it. Totally fine with that as it's LOGICAL. It's an unknown threat and it's asset denial. If it's logical I'm all for it so (y)

OK, just tested this - approached the settlement from ~500m in an SRV, targets yellow; when I reached 425m, all targets turned red and put their shields up.

This is definitely new behaviour.

Again, spotted by sharp shooter in pitch black from the OTHER SIDE OF A LARGE SETTLEMENT. I could only just see them with my Executioner with the scope mod! Perhaps because of the distance it couldn't path find from it's position on the roof to my position on a roof, but didn't stop it firing at me.

Here is my feedback after a short playthrough :
1. FPS is somewhat improved - no perfect with dips to 25 in the concourse, but it's playable.
2. Planets textures seems improved but I have not tested many planets
3. Coloring/effects have not improved - though there is more light, effects are lacking and colors are off its most noticeable when comparing the ship shield indicator which in Horizon had a nice energy hue to it, and in EDO it looks like the button of an unclean swimming pool.

Edit : I tested ULTRA+ for terrain - this looks amazing and run OK, this is really how the game should look like - so credits where they are due

Is this an active settlement or unpowered and crawling with scavs?

If active, is there a skimmer? In the notes they said skimmers now pay less attention to on foot persons and more to ships. If SRVs are classified as ships in the code, well... that'd be why the aggro range is boosted.
