Update 6 your thoughts?

New AMD upscaling FSR 1.0 even set on Ultra Quality seems to be worse than the Normal upscaler set on super sampling x1.0 ???

For me the CAS sharpening option from patch 5 was way way better. Even better than normal X2.0 SS.

CAS now gone ??

Normal X1.00 seems to have better performance in patch 6 but cannot be certain. Anyone know how to reactivate the sharpening as going back to X1.0 makes the HUD text fuzzy/blurry.

The game is looking pretty good, and seems to run smoother for me at least. I hope it's running good for others, but I do like these optimization updates. They will optimize it more. FDEV has been known for releasing things sometimes sub-optimal, but they usually make up for it with a decently optimized game in the end.

* edit * I take some of it back. Had drops to 20-25 fps at bases, but everywhere else seemed to be much better.

While megaship looting finally works again, it's a bit of a pyrrhic victory from my perspective - performance is still pretty awful all things considered (particularly in the context of what's visible on-screen) and only somewhat addressed by using corner-cutting 3rd party solutions (FSR) which, like any good old double edged sword, further degrades image quality, as if the game didn't already have issues with aliasing and blurry visuals before despite running it at 2k and Ultra settings. It's especially noticeable now after taking a short break and playing other games for the last few weeks.

Alas, it seems that after six patches Frontier is not able to work wonders with EDO after all, just as I feared (but I kept quiet until its release so not to jinx it).

Some stuff gets fixed, new issues introduced (some even deliberately, quite incredibly), many paid-for cosmetics still broken to the extent that I doubt they'll ever get sorted again. Frontier doing what Frontier does 'best'. One step forward, two steps back. Some things just never change I guess and it's time to face reality and stop hoping for better times.

So in light of all that, personally I've reached a crossroads in a take-it-or-leave-it kind of way with the game as what we have in front of us is the finished product.

I might just end up resetting my 7 year old triple-E CMDR save after all - who cares about G5 engineering when there's no players around anymore, who cares about a Fleet Carrier which reminds me each time I approach it of the various bugs and visual degradation around it, even my beloved Triple Elite decal looks complete pants in EDO now (no more shiny golden, just matte yellow) - and since the new Elite+ ranks got introduced even being triple Elite is now devalued as well so I no longer care about those either.

Might tick off those last bucket list items then in the hope of getting a few more dozen or hundred hours out of it before I bin it: experiencing the Elite early game, but via Odyssey (since my alt account is Horizons only and will never get the DLC now). The idea does appeal right now, and it might even rekindle my interest with the game again - or instead give my motivation the kiss of death, in which case that's fine too.

Either way, 7 years and 4k+ hours would be as good a run as any, it's just a pity it might end on a low rather than a high.

The new AMD subsampling on Ultra Quality looks better than the 0.85 subsampling I was using before, with less text blurring. Turning it down to "Quality" still results in unacceptable text blurring on "in-game" text like some of the HUD UI or the terminals outside full-screen overlays, though. Despite the glass optimisations made in this update, it's still a killer for me - I go from 60 FPS looking away from glass to 30-40 looking at/through it on the concourse - but on the other hand FPS outside and in some smaller interior spaces actually runs at 60 now at least some of the time, and rarely seems to drop below 40, so overall things are improved, though there's still definitely more needed.

Scavengers noticing you dropping hundreds of tonnes of ship on the nearby landing pad is good ... the downside is that time spent shooting at your ship is just drawing them out and giving away their position: makes them easier to kill with good equipment, probably makes them even harder to kill with poor equipment as you have to do even more to sneak up on them.

Planet surfaces definitely looking a lot better from orbit and up close at a first glance. Some of the lighting anomalies seem fixed, too.

Took 5 salvage missions, 3 got finished, 2 failed.
1 was crash site, collected all stuff, mission didn't acknowledge completion & 1 item in a locker at empty site, went to locker it was full of stuff, that was taken, though item that should have completed the mission wasn't in that locker???.......both failed missions abandoned, will try some more tomoro.

So what are your thoughts on Update 6? what's still broken, what do love or hate. Personally after just a few minutes I can see a major improvement but time will tell..
For now: everything looks much better, the game is much more stable, BUT my FPS dropped while closing to/landing on planets.

It says in-game to use the AMD upscaling FSR only if super sampling is set to anything below 1.0. So the way I understand it, if someone is getting decent framerates with SS at 1.0, to not use the AMD upscaling at all. If the only way for someone to get decent framerates is to use SS below 1.0, then use the AMD FSR settings instead. Please feel free to correct me if I'm mistaken.

Played a bit. The FSR option pushed my concourse framerates to around 56 when running (hits cap of 60 when stopped). Definite improvement, where I was in the 40s before.

CZ performance at non-mining bases is perhaps slightly improved (but I increased my quality settings). More noticeable boost after the combat.

The mining settlements are still a disaster (unstable 20-30 FPS) but perhaps not as much of a disaster as before. There needs to be a setting to turn off mining lasers (which I assume is the problem). Get rid of the mining settlement problems (and tone down fires), and I will go back to not caring about performance. (Until I was involved in Odyssey discussions, I had no idea what framerates I had in Horizons.)

The cost of the FSR is that ship’s HUD is blurry. If I were doing a lot of flying, I’d probably turn it off. Having separate space/ground settings would help.

The transporters have anomalies.

Have done one base theft mission only

Performance and general graphics is much better for me (AMD 6800)

Shadows on planet were jagged and flickery, and suddenly appeared at certain distance.

hold E to pick stuff up is a valiant attempt but an epic fail, only way someone put that in is if they haven't really played the game and are going purely on theory.

Didn't notice much change to the AI, but then again, I just kill things with headshots from close up so....

All my suits had their cosmetics removed so I had to reapply them, not a huge deal.

Station menu wrangling is gone, that was annoying.

Want to test megaship looting because that's a bug I've wanted squashed for ages.

Pretty much a thumbs up.

...

Well, x1.0 is no upscaling, rendering at the actual target resolution, so... :7

So far, I'm finding that for performance/quality balance, if using FSR, I may well prefer foregoing the built-in FSR option, in favour of the external FSR hack (...for SteamVR users), with game supersampling set to x1.25 (...which is a silly act-and-immediately-counteract-what-you-just-did practice), because SMAA just isn't up to the job (the hack also lets you set arbitrary subsampling factor- and sharpening values).

Terrain... Looks better in some ways, and worse in others, IMHO... Was using: "Ultra for Capture" before, and now: "Ultra+", which I suppose replaces it... Utterly moot nomenclature comparison, probably, given all the LOD tables will have been rebalanced anyway... :p

I had a bit of: "Uh-oh..." reaction to the mention about shinier terrain, and hopped into game only to immediately have that reaction confirmed by some mud-looking ground that turned between yellow and orange in a very wierd and abrupt way... It was a high metal content planet, so maybe that mud consisted of 50% gold powder - I don't know... :p
-Overall there seem to be rather much contrast to ground materials, causing very stark lighting, with an all white side and an all black side on almost perfectly flat ground, without needing a low light source -- even more so than pre update 6.

(All the crushing whites that came with Odyssey right from the start, tells me we all really need to switch to HDR displays... :p)

One little thing... Was the composition scanner reticle always an upside down version of the data link scanner one, or is that new? :7

I hate that I am no longer able to wear sunglasses with the maverick, dominator, or, artemis suits. My sunglasses are a stable of my being, and without them I do not feel like a whole commander.

A commander without sunglasses can never be a whole commander.
Having a Remlock face screen that can withstand the radiation of neutron stars is swell but nothing beats a nice pair of Serengetis.

0.0 is disabled. not 1.0

So before we were looking on the surfaces for a patch of grey/brown in a sea of grey/brown patches... Now we are looking for a black cat in a dark cellar with the freaking lights turned off! Is this a joke?????

FDev is unable to fix Odyssey's renderer. That is becoming more clear with each update. Upscaling is what you do after you run out of ideas. It's not a fix but a desperate attempt to mitigate the symptoms.
