Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

Did you look at my GPU usage on the Orison screenshot?

98% on an RTX 2070 super, plus 48% CPU spread over 8 cores...let's not mention the 21Gb of system RAM and 6.6Gb of VRAM it's pulling...and that's just flying out of the place with nothing but wispy pink fluff in the shot...the screenshot was also taken when I had the volumetric cloud detail set to high, not maxed out.

Here's another, closer in...27Gb of system RAM, 6.5Gb of VRAM but the GPU usage has dropped to 63% even though there's slightly more onscreen...the performance budget is all over the place.

I can have volumetric clouds like these in MSFS 2020 at 60fps on my rig... Star Citizen's pink wispy and featureless clouds...24fps

Orison has a weird hue don't you think? i don't what it is but the colour doesn't look right, it has an odd green tint. SweetFX will probably correct it........

In any case those clouds do look flat and featureless, at least close up like that, but they are not done, they are working on SDF for them to give them a lot more detail close up, more like the lagrange gas clouds, it will also help with the performance, the lagrange gas clouds have near 0 effect on the GPU, as they are these have a huge effect on it.

I went for a wander around Orison just to see if the latest PTU patch made any difference with all my settings maxed out...don't know how they managed it, but I'm back up to 20-ish fps with all the fancy leaves blowing about. Went over to the worst culprit at Orison for killing the framerate, Finlay the whale statue...stuck at 20-ish fps again. It was single digits yesterday with everything pulled back to high instead of maxed out 🤷‍♂️

Video when YouTube has finished butchering the quality...

Every 3D game have physicalized objects, it's nothing new. But one noticeable thing about SC is that the number of physicalized and movable objects managed by the server is HUGE and uncommon for a MMOFPS game. The day you'll go to a derelict in space, every single piece of metal you see floating around the derelict (there are hundreds of them) is managed by the server and can be put in your cargo and taken elsewhere. And it's only decoration, not even useful objects for the mission like boxes or corpses.

Ah, so its not the tech, its the quantity of objects. Yes, that sounds about right for SC.

He does need to calm down a bit he's getting to the point where his voice is braking while screaming, that's someone who has problems with his emotions and is emotionally invested in it.

He openly admits he is. If he wasn't, he'd have quit ages ago. He has these periodic rages and then falls back in love with the game. Kind of like an abusive relationship.

I still like him though. But i also like Yamiks... sooooo....

Everytime he gets this way he brings up how he almost quit Star Citizen once before, but that he's not going to, because he believes in the project, and that, as a content creator, he feels obligated to give feedback, etc. etc. etc.

It's like he comes close to realizing his own emotional sunk cost without actually bursting his own bubble.

CIG have normally started to add the gen12 renderer in 3.14 (but it will have no effect in this patch).
Integration will continue for one or two patch and afterthat, they will add Vulkan and activate it.
So expect some weird bugs about FPS for some patches.
