disappointed

If I say "you will do this" and later on I say "no you won't", then I was misleading. It's not breaking a promise but it's misleading nevertheless.
It depends... do you see Elite: Dangerous as a finished product? If you do, then I agree.

I do not see ED as a finished product yet. As long as people support FDev, they will keep developing it.

It's local though, and lots of empty systems.

SC chat is global, if only because apparently there is only 1 star system :D
True... but usually when you start out in ED, you are among fairly populated (by players) systems. But yes... those systems are usually populated by new players... lol

I agree that it is harder in ED to make contact with people in the game, since there are 400 billion systems in ED compared to SC that has 1 system as of now.

Apparently another Star system coming next year. I've seen some early screenshots of it and it looks awesome. Can't wait.

In fairness, any thread about Odyssey from someone who doesn't like it ends up like this one. First page is all ad-hominems, as per usual.

I agree, but this OP felt custom-made to either rile people up or to be very funny (for those with a very dry sense of humor). Just from the perspective of a "1 minute in and there's all these controls and I can't tell what is going on" complaint followed by "nope. back to Elite Dangerous Horizons for me!"

I mean for real: what? Yes, Horizons, well known for being easy for new players to digest within the first few minutes, no training or consultation of external reference material necessary.

How is the OP not hilarious? And I'm not completely convinced that wasn't deliberate.

There's a lot of assumptions being made there on the back of a forum post. It's not very clear (even with the tutorial) what the hell is going on in Odyssey, because the tutorial barely scratches the surface of the (unmapped) controls, never mind anything else. 🤷‍♀️

But rather than being inclusive & attempting to help the OP, people instead lay into them and engage in personal abuse in an attempt to be "funny".

Anyway, it's just an observation, and it's not an isolated event either. Apparently the mods think this is fine. Whatever.

If you think a post breaks rules feel free to report it. We can't read every single post on the forums. I have actually noticed an increased trolling and malicious sarcasm on the forums in general and I am raising it with the powers that be. But that's behind the scenes and we shouldn't really be discussing it on here.

OP loads up Odyssey without reading about it or viewing ANY YT videos on what it's about........then complains that (s)he doesn't know what to do 🤷‍♂️ :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:
Well, the Elite Dangerous "base game" has a manual, which is linked from the launcher... Odyssey, less so. So we can't even say RTFM any longer.

You have a point and I mostly agree. My post wasn't meant to be an argument in support of this forum's general attitude when it comes to opposing opinions. Just that it strikes me as funny that the OP seems to take Odyssey to task for things that have also historically been a huge problem with ED in general, and then say "Nope, back to ED for me!"

The few times I've been able to convince a friend to pick up ED to join me have all ended in some flavor of the complaints sited in the OP. Only Odyssey didn't exist and they were talking about ED (not even Horizons). Mostly after just a few minutes of trying the game, and in one case after an entire evening of frustration with me online and trying to guide them through.

And as welcoming, or not, as those in this forum are to opposing viewpoints, the OP still reads to me as not necessarily on the level for exactly these reasons.

I actually don't think it's opposing view points that causes an issue. It's the associated labeling. I'll give a simple example.
'I hate Odyssey after trying it for a hot minute'.

I know what label I attach to that, and thats' that I agree that nothing in EDH or EDO is user friendly. Both have steep learning curves, and that doesn't include the bugs that were causing lost reputation and revenue.

We have also had a rash of rehashing ancient arguments. PvPers that don't want bounties. Everyone should play in Open. No Change of any kind is good. I know I'm missing some, but you get the picture. The fact that the OP said he\she was heading back to EDH makes me firmly believe she\he is in the "No Change of any kind is good", or is just a troll.... and like I said, I agree with the underlying 'argument', but this is ED and I never expected anything different. No long playing ED player should have expected anything different. Though the tutorial was pretty darn good.

I also agree with rootsrat. Some of these threads that are popping up are specifically to cause nothing but churn that can quickly turn into trolling if it's not getting enough replies.

Makes no sense to me.

I am playing the training mission
suit shield ? what key turns it on? the narrator keeps on about it but the options menu doesn't seem to have it
there is a plethora of keys to remember but my memory is not exactly up to it.
god help me if I used VR - do I have to get an xbox controller?
and why am I playing a doom clone? at least in doom it did not use every key 😞

V by default I think. It's in the options.

And it certainly NOT a doom clone :D

Have you considered opening the controls menu and setting them up to something memorable first? First run of Odyssey creates a set of bindings which may or may not be populated (mine wasn't) so taking time to go through the 4 types (General, Ship, SRV, Foot) and check that the familiar is still there and the new is setup to one's taste, then saving and renaming the bindings file (changing line 2 of the file, Notepad is good enough, to match the name you gave it) would make coming back for a second (assuming you ever bother) session a little easier.

I don't know about Odyssey being a Doom clone, but if thinking that pleases you, that's fine.

Personally I think think the little indicator on options, and then controls you get when you first come into Odyssey from Horizons should be a giant moving arrow with a message "set up you on foot" bindings!

I was around for SRV and the fighter upgrades, so when I fired up Odyssey knew I would have to bind the keys. My custom is not too far away from the my basic template for TM 16000 FCs + Hotas, so I know to default and adjust before I am going to use something for the first time.

If you have not been around for a while, this can come as a shock, hence my "point it out" obsvervation at the beginning.

Not gonna comment on the OP, other than "fair enough", OP was not seeking help, rather just telling the community.

As I said on other posts, spending more time in a PG these days - so generally do not care if someone plays Horizons, Odyssey or Star Citizen.

Simon

I can offer terrible advise in the first 2 if you aks a question, not so much the 3rd.
