Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

Rushed broken patch that had its alpha (evocati) and beta (ptu) stages, for an alpha that is neither tied to any deadline or ultimatum per se nor allegedly craving for money or time. And the project is lead by a Perfectionist, and its white knight army mocked Odyssey's mishaps and were crying of joy seeing streamers fleeing to their Dream.

Chef's kiss.

Thing is, SC always gets more viewers on twitch than ED, so the streamers made a sound business decision no matter how bad things are.

Their problem will come when, like BoredGamer and SalteMike etc, they run out of things to do/patience to do them. Maybe they too will just talk about the game rather than play it.

It just needs to attract new "influencers" to in turn attract more gullibers. It's a given because eventually anyone would run dry on just a single game.

For what I've read about the 3.14 PTU, the main claiming bug was not here (only the usual one you can workaround by changing station). It seems to be specific to the release in the PU.
Someone having played the PTU can confirm ?

Just watching SalteMike on twitch, laughing at the ED players playing SC videos. He just said "This guy is HIGH" and "Who told you THAT?" lol.

Lol, just dipped in and it's just a video going 'I was really excited to find the bar. But then so disappointed. It was so dull. But then I realised, it WOULD be wouldn't it. Airport bars ARE dull.'

Now he's saying "Oh yeah, Star Citizen will allow you to participate in actual races, as a career', and SaltE's nearly choked on his snack. Can't even get the snark out 😁

The guy has some mental issues, quite clearly, i learned that when he got so worked up he started pacing around the room holding his head in his hands screaming.

Yes he's on Twitch right now aggressively insulting and name calling other content creators, its not at all entertaining, its like watching people provoking someone with a mental disorder.

Nah he's just been driven mad by SC. That's different ;)

Being driven that mad by a video game is not normal.
Have you stopped by either of the two big subreddits that discuss SC? The main one or refunds?

The insanity is baked into the project.

As for Mike, he's just being performative. Overreacting on camera (or microphone) is good for the audience. Hyperbole is good for keeping eyes on the stream. Like professional wrestling or the 24-hour news cycle.

Agreed, but this forum and reddit are somehow stuffed with people who've let a single computer game absolutely flip their melon ¯\(ツ)/¯

In Mike's case it's more understandable though:
  • As a semi-pro streamer he's tied his wagon to SC, and is somewhat stuck with it. Being obliged to play a game is likely to erode the fun and become frustrating - especially if it's a buggy early alpha. Perpetually ;)
  • As he's noted, angry streams do well. This is a grubby truism of talking-head vids more generally, but he's specifically noted it regarding his SC streams, with negative vids getting significantly more viewers.

With happy bunny content creators like Morphologist also not happy currently, and discussing the general drop in SC viewer numbers, I guess in total the question is:

When will one of the ED refugees flip to rant content ;)

Games are escapism, some need that a lot more than others, it seems to me at least Mike needs SC to be something it never can.

Ranting on Twitch is entertaining but it does have its limits, and Mike himself has said he's stopped paying attention to his viewing figures because they are going down and that upsets him even more.

Games are escapism, for some.

For others, it's a pathway to passive income and minor celebrity (for certain values of online celebrity in the streaming world regarding niche games). Mike has also said in the past that he needed CIG to deliver because he relies on the game being good to keep streaming. He's also said he's giving up on SC.

Yet here we are. He says a lot of things. Consistency was never his bag.

For other people, games (SC in particular) have become something else. A chance to laugh at the naysayers, the people who year after year said it couldn't be done. From the "90 days tops!" people to those who laughed at macrotransactions, to those who wonder why CIG will ignore the lack of fundamentals while touting stuff like "Hey, we have ASL emotes in the project now!" Those (EDIT: the people defending SC on all platforms - I feel the need to clarify)) are the ones getting angry, lashing out, and showing up in threads and comment sections of articles to show how unbalanced they've become over a video game. That has some crossover with the "spite pledging" crowd, but it comes down to emotional sunk cost.

In short, the blissful escapism is the ideal reason why people play, but once you get past that veneer, the reasons are more varied.

Nah, I like Mike, he is entertaining even though I disagree with virtually everything he says. I wish he'd find a game he actually likes though.

There is far to much in one system, Stanton, for the servers to handle on their own.
While very true, at this moment in time I'm not sure that static server meshing (alone) will resolve the performance problems.

Case in point being the much delayed Theaters of War: it's a separate gamemode, with only one planet and space station on one server, yet has still been plagued by massive performance problems.

That would indicate to me that even having every planet and moon each managed by separate servers - so like 20 servers just for a single "shard" of Stanton alone, excluding multiple instances - isn't enough to get performance to a satisfactory level.

Their server costs are going to be insane if they can't make things work better.
