Shifting colours while flying above planets

Unfortunately, a problem with my Frontier account prevents me from creating a ticket on the Issue Tracker.

@ObiW - as the thread starter, would you mind creating a ticket so you can update your original post with a link to it? You can just copy and paste the details below if you like:

Problem Description
Some planets with coloured ground textures change their colour when you approach to within 100m of the surface.

See examples:

Steps to Reproduce
1. Find any landable planet with vivid ground colours (e.g. Thailae FP-A D3 AB 1 and Thailae FP-A D3 AB 3 have strong red colouring).
2. Approach a strongly coloured section, as if to land.
3. When you get to within 100m of the ground, the coloured ground textures are replaced with different coloured textures instead.
Here we go:

Cheers for taking the time to type it up and take some footage - it’s almost exactly what I was seeing the other morning, the same colours 👍

Now that I am doing a bit of exobiology it's difficult not to notice this.
I usually skim the surface of planets for any life forms. And the colour of the ground shifts together with me

Many times I thought to myself "hey, I'd better check out that snowy/sandy part of the planet", only to find that it's not actually there. When I try to reach that part of the planet the colour just changes to the same that I am above now.

So "what you see is not what you get".

I added to the issue above.

This is definitely a thing - I thought I was imagining it. This and the Lighting flashes and sudden LOD redraws and now the pixel Pokémon glitch filter on planet surfaces? And tile lines on verticals.

You have to look carefully on the hill in the BG and the planet surface on the right? - Maybe something reset but been noticing this glitch texture in a few places and the lines on the more vertical slopes

Hmm...I've actually not witnessed this issue since Update 7 was released. Anyone else still getting it? Can you post a video of the issue if you are?

Unfortunately, it is still happening in Update 7.
I will try to grab a screen or a video when I come around the next vivid planet (where the issue is more apparent).

Yep, still happening in 7.0.1.

(sorry about the quality, I recorded it @1440p but Youtube downgraded it to 1080p - and quite badly at that)

See how the nice smooth pink parts of the planet are gradually shifting and becoming grey.
Not only it looks bad but it's a pain when hunting for bacteria. And this also happens with "snowy" surfaces... which when you come closer aren't snowy at all.

Ok, thanks!

Is it just me, or is it not as bad as it was? It looks like FDev are making improvements in this area, but still need to do a bit more work.

I’m not sure how bad it used to be - I mainly spent my time in Odyssey in a couple of systems where this wasn’t an issue.

But it looks pretty bad to me. On some planets you can see in real time how supposedly snowy parts are being replaced by gravel.
That’s not good at all.

However, if this used to be worse then kudos to FDev and hopefully they will continue to improve this.

So planet rendering issues still, coupled with terrible frame rates and lots of other little niggles and bugs - it feels like May the 19th again.
It's hard to believe it was 4 months ago and we've had 7 big updates and lots of small updates, but: Odyssey is still broken.

On the plus side at least the terrible new UI is now functional at least, even if it does still look worse than the old UI in places.

Tbh, as someone who has owned EDO since launch day and has been playing on and off since then...

Apart from the UI changes, very little seems to have improved at all through 7 Update patches. Performance is still bad, lighting is still broken, planet generation still doesn't work properly, cockpits still look overly dark, and many of the original bugs from the Alpha are still there. Never mind the laundry list of NEW bugs each Update has brought that DIDN'T get fixed.

People keep telling me that "so much has improved" and "it's much better than launch" but I don't see it. And adding FSR to bypass the awful optimization does not count.

This problem has been around at least since update 5 and is especially noticeable when skimming low over the surface when searching for Exo's. Added my confirmation to the Issue Tracker.
The issue may be resolved when FD carry out the future texture rendering fixes/upgrades - Patch 8??

Hopefully, and thanks for adding to the issue report - just 3 more unique Confirmations and the report should be safe from Expiring.

I'm just wondering whether others have noticed this and whether it's by design or a known issue? I can't unsee it now and it's really putting me off the new planet tech (which has grown on me since the last couple of patches).

I believe this is an example of an issue with how the shadow cascades interact with different terrain LODs that I've been struggling with. It can be mitigated by adjusting the shadow tables, but I haven't been able to eliminate it in Odyssey's planet approach profile. Something similar is also visible on the default planet surface profile when on foot, but it's only visible at fairly extreme angles of incidence and is easier to fix regardless.

Horizons is also afflicted, but not to the same degree.

There are probably also other texture and mesh LOD factors at play that we have very little control over.

C) some really bizarre, unrelated ... bug. All the while the rest of the terrain morphs and moves around weirdly. It's freaky stuff.

That's a bug the terrain generation system, probably the LOD blending. There is a perfectly repeatable example in the suit tutorial that has existed since the first alpha.

I've seen every issue in this thread crop up since at least Alpha 2.
