Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

So, schedule for the big con is out

I'll summarize:

Opening: Chris waffles on for 30 minutes about things that don't exist yet. Backers become convinced they now understand game development more.

Life in the 'verse: Ian Leyland, Todd Papy, and David Haddock waffle on for an hour about things that don't exist yet. Backers become convinced they now understand game development more.

Ship Talk: John Crewe, Ben Curtis, Paul Jones waffle on for an hour about things that don't exist yet. Backers become convinced they now understand game development more.

Expect a ship sale to to highlighted here. Backers urged to pledge more. Chris needs more money.

Gen 12 and Vulkan: Ali Brown, Christopher Bolte, Darrell Barnes waffle on for an hour about things that don't exist yet. Backers become convinced they now understand game development more.

And so on, there is a lot more. But i'm sure mainly it can be summarized as people talking about things that don't exist, like its all coming soon, but not really, with of course guiding people towards buying more ships.

Hell, there's even one part

Systemic Gameplay: Stream of Thought
Tony Zurovec leads a wide-ranging discussion...

I'm sure that's going to be an absoloute snooze-fest.

I also see no mention of ToW.

Well at least he seems honest:

And it sucked at times. We probably 30k’d a thousand times between the entire team. Not an exaggeration...

... it’s so hard to get everyone together in the same place without error...

Like many beginnings, it was an end to some. To many, yet another beginning spun anew. For the few, it was an absolute conclusion, recorded before the events transpired and foreseen as fact; a slow march into the pit of eventuality.
Let me just grab my Secret Decoder Wheel .......... ok ... I translate that to: Moles' demon cows will inherit the earth ... Hmm, not sure I got that right!

But of course. SC is not a game. SC is a cult. That is the problem.

Unfortunately, it dropped me off 24 km away from the station, and at sub 100 m/s speeds, would take me a while. With nothing better to do, I started looking around the cockpit, playing around with the diegetic controls... or at least the ones that worked. To some point, I accidentially moved the mouse wheel forward, and discovered that doing so increased my speed.
What, he did not found no radio? What heresy is this? A Microsoft Flight Simulator?

Will SC or SQ42 release before I'm done downloading this?
Why, yes! In CRobber's way of release, of course (disclaimer: not a real release)

The owner of Turbulent is on the panel for Server Meshing.

I half remember a post from @WotGTheAgent saying that Turbulent would be taking over Server Meshing development 😀
Is that good or bad news? What do we know about Turbulent? What is it about this server meshing technology that is so difficult? How is it different compared to what we see in your average MMO?

It’s comedy news.

Server Meshing is CIG’s term for having thousands concurrently in the same “instance”. This is a never-been-done-before thing for a giant glossy open world.

Turbulent make website functionality.

Turbulent have also hired a ton of experienced devs from places like Ubisoft, as part of their move into game dev. So there’s that.

But the other funny side is that they seem to be getting handed tasks which CIG have continually failed to deliver. This suggests disquiet on the part of the investors. And that a Freelancer-esque "abandon Chris’s ludicrous claims and get something out" scenario may be playing out behind the scenes…

Server Meshing as envisioned, with 40,000 people in the same world at the same time, ain’t ever happening ;)

But their first step, their Tier 0, is static server meshing, where they will simply aim for the lofty heights of having everyone in the same "server" but instanced as necessary. Never been done before! Also what ED has had for years and every other online multiplayer game has managed without making a fuss about it.

Also, most MMO devs try and figure out how they are going to do the networking early on, and not still figuring it out 9 years after development started.

But what do I know? I clearly don't understand game development.

So! Given that it's not hard to make a website having thousands of visitors concurrently, the future seems bright for SC!
Game server can't be that more complex than a website, right? Right?!
