Newcomer / Intro My Return to ED ......

You have normal cruising speed, super cruise (which is 'faster than light' travel to get you around a system) then hyperdrive to get you to another system.
You will have to check your key bindings to see what is set for super cruise.
Yes ....... I've reset Supercruise to <J> and Hyperdrive <K>. Thanks for that. And thank you to Quain.
Can't go back means just that. You will be banned from the entire newbie area.
Right ...... so if I leave the area (which I most definitely will ...... eventually) is it going to mean I can't visit a place like Dromi, a solar system
I'm very close to at the moment and have visited many times.
I gather they have done this to protect any newbies to ED getting shot down by experienced pilots.
That drain on your data will be YouTube, not ED.

The link takes you directly to EDDB with all the Hauler modules already selected (like a shopping list) ready to click the Find stations button so you know where to get the Hauler plus all parts. One of the entries on the form is Reference system - enter the name of the system you are currently in then click Find stations to see a list of places you can buy the Hauler and modules you need. Nearest station is at the top of the list.

There is a mistake in this post I made. The Hauler takes a size 2 fuel scoop, where I referred to size 3 fuel scoop like 3C and 3A.
So for fuel scoop a 2C is adequate in the Hauler and the 2A far too expensive.
Ok. Get back to you on this ..............

Yes you are in the newbie zone so you can learn to play without too much trouble from other players or other "pirates" etc

Ok. (y) Heading for a place called the Khaka solar system with a station called Qureshi Enterprise. It's about 24ly away. This will probably shut me out of this area but so be it. I've got 750 000 credits which I hope will be enough for the Hauler and the 2C Scoop. If not, more missions. ;)

Ok. Duly noted.

You have more than enough credits and could stretch to a 2B fuel scoop and still have credits to spare.

Welcome to the Galaxy :) It's big and exciting and you can do whatever you want (or try, at least!).

Back when I started playing there was no newbie zone. I'm still not sure it's a good idea to have one. It seems to just make people scared to leave it, when there's actually nothing much in there worth bothering with. Missions pay less, you can't get all ships or modules, etc. The only 'advantage' is that high-level players can't go in and bother the newbies, but that only applies if you're playing in Open.

In any case, you've joined the rest of us now. Welcome to the club.

A whole galaxy awaits you now. Once you start exploring, especially further away from the bubble, you will enjoy yourself.

I'm currently in a nebula discovering Lagrange Clouds and the life they contain.
The life isn't new and has been discovered before, but it's still nice to watch, in my case Capsule Molluscs, spawning or mating or fighting or whatever the hell they are doing.

By the way.... your data on Inara isn't updating. If you have set it that way, then cool. But if you would like other Commanders to see where you are and what you are doing, then you need to go through your settings on there.
If you enable Auto Update then the site will collect your game data for you.

If you look at mine you will see it is up to date about where I am, what I have, etc...

😛 Lovely! Thanks. Yes, I thought it would be confined to Open.
However, it just astounds me that people would go in and take newbies out just for the fun of it! 😲
But that was until this week, where in Melbourne we have had people joining rallies again compulsory COVD vaccinations, who had no interest in vaccinations and were there just to case trouble !

No, I wasn't aware, and I will correct it. Thank You.

Ha! While I've been in Pause (away posting at the forum, here in other words), my ship has repositioned itself so that I can now clearly see the solar system I wish to supercruise to. :p
There is no pause in Elite.

If you go to the menu with RESUME at the top the game is still running and your ship is still using fuel and power, given long enough it will be destroyed when it runs out of fuel.

If you go to the menu with CONTINUE at the top your ship will have left the game and be safe.

Whatever you do the clock and calendar in the game will keep going as that never stops.

I couldn't find auto-update but I think I've fixed it anyway. (y)

When this pops up.....

Even when you use CONTINUE ?
Seems strange that you can "withdraw the ship" but the clock keeps running.
(Sorry, I'm not questioning what you're saying, I'm just trying to clarify it ....... )

Hence, taking the "withdrawal" to the extreme, you could have a 20-year war running, (the ship being withdrawn for those 20 years for safety reasons),
with the ship only re-entered the game at the war's conclusion ......
Would that work ? 🤔

Yes that would work. Solo mode just means you don't get to see or interact with other human players, but everyone is still sharing the same galaxy where the clock is ticking and player actions influence aspects of the game such as the influence factions have. You will see this referred to on the forum as the BGS - Background Simulation.

Fascinating ......... you could/would re-enter after 20 years to a totally different "game" scenario. And I assume it would be the same in SOLO and OPEN.

That's even more fascinating.
It means (or I think it means) when I shut ED down at night, ED is still running !
If I rejoin 12 hours later, 12 hours have been completed in ED while I've been away !
That enemy ship I was hunting down unsuccessfully 12 hours earlier, could have been shot down by somebody else !
Is that right ? ................. my mind boggles !!! ................. 😱

Yes, in ED there is a mixture of things created in the star system you are currently in just for you and your current mission (your "instance") and other Background Simulation effects that are shared with all players. Which faction or superpower controlling a system and/or station and trading market prices are shared among, and influenced by, all players. If enough players sell one commodity at a particular station it impacts on the buy price offered for everyone the next day. This is just one example.
The whole reason the Colonia region with 96 human occupied systems exists, is because players shipped resources to what is today Jacques Station to repair it some years back now - at least that is the gist of the story.

Here's the Galaxy Map showing the 7 jump journey.
I'm a bit nervous about taking the trip without a fuel scoop ..... :(
Just the first jump uses almost a tank full of fuel, and I'm uncertain about refueling at any station I find.
I need to check out fuel services available to me at each solar system I visit ......
