Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

So, what are backers' thoughts on the changes to death. These new ibrahim spheres.

It used to be that DoaS was hailed as the best idea since sliced bread. Now it seems they are walking back on the idea somewhat, allowing you to retain your character through a kind of cloning/resurrection. Something backers were vociferously against not that long ago. (I'm sure some of them will have flip-flopped on that the moment CIG said they were changing it).

Personally i've always said that its all stupid. Just use a standard respawn mechanic like almost every other game out there. People don't like losing their toons.

It's an unimaginative ripoff of Altered Carbon, without any of the supporting lore and forethought of it.
Altered Carbon synopsis said:
In the future, a person's memories and consciousness (termed digital human freight, or DHF) are recorded onto a disk-shaped device called a cortical stack, which is implanted in the vertebrae at the back of the neck. These storage devices are of alien design and have been reverse-engineered and mass-produced but can only be made from the material on Harlan's World. Physical human or synthetic bodies are called "sleeves" and stacks can be transferred to new bodies after death, but a person can still be killed if their stack is destroyed and there is no backup. Only the wealthiest, known as "Meths" in reference to Methuselah, have the means to change bodies through clones and remote storage of their consciousness in satellites, so they never have to die of old age before being resleeved.
That CIG are mentioning different qualities of spheres means even more Pay2Win items for purchase.

Guard Frequency tore it to shreds in this weekend's show recording too, after briefly chatting about Theaters Of War and Firesprite (SC segment starts around 20 minutes in).

So basically Bioshock vita-chambers?

Well yes, they do, but they mainly like Death of a Spaceman (nice slip by Tony saying Death of a Salesman) and see this as a dilution/walking back.

Just got onto the part now about why do the echos carry over, and its some really dumb stuff that anyone could poke a hole in in seconds.

I don’t play SC but what’s an Ibrahim Sphere? Are they trying to make re-spawn more of a materialistic element?

So, basically, it seems like a playstation 1 save slot. Where your body's state is periodically saved.
Ahhhh. So you may have to start paying for more advanced spheres - is that what was mentioned. I get it now. Because its like a PlayStation 1do you come back all pixelated. I assume the player has to slot one in to his belt or something?

I wonder if one could steal it.

Would be a terrible shock if that happened eh ;)

So it's interesting that GameWorks licenses are for 'Demos, Expansion Packs, Games and/or other applications'. (And include console deployment etc).

I guess that floats the possibility of ToW being lined up as a demo. But the other backdrop stuff he raises stills points to a stand-alone title. IE it would be the only way for Firesprite to get UK tax-breaks etc - working as contractors on an existing title wouldn't be enough. (And hell, the lien paperwork itself describes the product as a game, for that matter.)

It's still interesting to ponder what CIG were thinking pre-Calders when they dialled this deal up in 2017 though. Was it a way to attract investors? ('Look at this spin-off title that we can launch on console, broadening the market massively. The sky's the limit!' etc). That would certainly be more impactful than a demo or downstream expansion pack.

Given the Calders' likely hunger for returns on their investments, even if that wasn't the plan, it's definitely easy to imagine it is now ;)

Is that good or bad news? What do we know about Turbulent? What is it about this server meshing technology that is so difficult? How is it different compared to what we see in your average MMO?
I started hearing and posting about Turbulent's ever increasing responsibilities in 2017, especially about how they were consuming more and more backer funds as their scope of work increased. I posted a rehash of some Turbulent leaks (not all) to SA a few days ago. Not sure if the paywall is up or not.

Oh, missed this. Probably the closest we’ve got to Firesprite’s remit under Sony:

They already have some strong ties with certain first-party studios, but I want to be clear that we want them to lead the development of several game projects, rather than helping other teams out, even though they have collaborating with us before.

Guess that ToW team is staying small, at best…

Was just casually watching Mike stream while having a coffee and suddenly CptnBerks is in having a major rant. A bit surprised by the harshness tbh.

Star Citizen is laughably unplayable at the moment

Not a single pvp fight without significant desynch for over 12 months

Paste them here. I refuse to ever go back to that cesspool of a site.

Gabi is even more brutal than Berks

The rest of the discussion with Gabi, after the clipped part is definitely worth it. It is an eye opener from someone relatively fresh to the game with very little bias other than what a friend may have told her: SC after 10+ years of development is still utter biowaste in all main dimensions. It is essentially just the hype and misrepresentation of what it could be if it wasn´t utter biowaste that allows CIG to abuse the market.

Good day fellow Scam enjoyers! I see we already have a fair bit of salt going on here. I am thinking of buying the Legatus Package in order to help finance Chris Robert's 4th Yacht! Sure do love SC too!
