Development Update 4 - September

Horizons Cosmetics in Odyssey

We’re pleased to confirm that this work is now complete! From Update 8 you will be able to use your flight suit cosmetics with Odyssey’s suits.
PS: I still think that flight suit's cosmetics on top of EVA suits are wierd. However i know a lot of commanders will be happy about it.

I found another powerplay emote ...
Dropped a clanger there...

So ... just to confirm ... we've gone beyond just bug fixing the Odyssey release on PC before anything happens on console to actively adding additional content on PC? Before even getting the current set of Odyssey features on any of the other platforms?

I don't even particularly want Odyssey but come on, this is just insulting by this point ...

Yes but think we get to beta test if for a few years before consoles get it.

that was the plan all along, was stated in the 1st post about delaying consoles, I mentioned it a few times in that initial braben post and was (obviously) ignored

Yeah well it looks as if frontier are now doing a bit of sleight of hand . Not fixing but adding other stuff
"The evil was not in bread and circuses, per se, but in the willingness of the people to sell their rights as free men for full bellies and the excitement of the games which would serve to distract them from the other human hungers which bread and circuses can never appease."
Disappointed Frontier again

FDev have been clear that it isn't just bug fixing but optimisation too that's necessary before porting to last-gen consoles (required before current-gen ports can be done).

Thanks for the update, pretty exciting! Emotes, fleet carrier interiors! What a pleasant surprise! Thanks for hearing us!

Not sure if there is or will be a carrier interior idea/feedback thread, but, here's my 2c:

Hanger: I'd love to see an open garage-style layout of all the ships I've got loaded on my carrier, walk up to one, hop in, hit launch, and I get moved to a pad and off I go. Similarly, when teamed up, I would also be able to go to the "garage" of teammates to join them on one of their ships (seems kinda critical, actually, for the increased multicrew capability). I would love to be able to interact with the deck crew too:
  • For owners: cargo transfer and tritium depot (please integrate transfer of tritium from cargo into the depot without use of a ship)
  • request repairs, refueling, limpets
  • commodity market personnel (for owners and guests -- owners to manage the buy/sell orders, guests to buy/sell)

For the social space, please include an observation/concourse level with the on-foot amenities including:
  • Pioneer "lite" (for basic on-foot consumable re-supply -- perhaps if the re-arm, repair, refuel module is installed), plus basic suit/weapon sales and livery. It makes no sense that I can't replace a suit with a leak in the black. :)
    • [Edit] This could be expanded with a separate module/pack for premium suit + weapon sales and modification (ie. remote engineering), kinda like the shipyard packages (but better). I think all basic suits, weapons should be generally available.
  • InterAstra, carrier edition (included if a shipyard module is equipped?). Also, can we have better module/ship package flexibility?
  • Vista Genomics (included with UC or redemption module?)
  • Observation/bar/cafe area where we can see the launch pads (potentially dependent on the carrier skin), witness hyperspace jumps and sit and have a drink.
EDIT: I believe including on-foot amenities with existing modules (per suggestions above) is important:
  1. Like stations, fleet carriers are persistent in-game across game client versions (ie. same carrier exists in horizons and odyssey). It should be about consistency of the visiting pilot's experience. If an odyssey pilot visits a carrier owned by a horizons pilot, the odyssey player should still be able to disembark on it and use the on-foot amenities which consistent with the existing installed base modules on the carrier.
  2. A well equipped carrier (like the DSSA carriers or those owned by deep-space explorers) need not return to a carrier administration system just to equip yet another module to remain a universally valuable asset in the black. (This would be an insult to the players who put a lot of time, effort and resources into placing these
Finally:
  • A bridge w/ the ability to interact with the hired crew (Interactions could include plotting a course -- Bonus marks for adding multi-jump plotting).
For the real immersive ship buying experience (applies to the station InterAstra as well): buying, outfitting and livery all in one place then walking out to the hanger would be an experience akin to ordering a brand new car and walking out to the dealership's showroom and seeing it for the first time when it finally arrives! Getting to see your ship sitting there in the hangar all shiny and new for the first time would be... wow.

I realize these are ambitious ideas and may not be available at the beginning, but would love to see carriers becoming mobile hubs of activity abroad, and feeling like home.

Customization, to me, is nice, but totally secondary to function and quality. (Maybe start with basic theming based on the activity type we can currently select: Exploration, AX, etc.).

Very excited for what's coming!!

I consider this "content" more a completition of what Odyssey have to be, rather than "additional content". You know, alphas often add features not completed before :p

there is some nice additions there, looking foward to it, but this right here:
1. FPS performance in Odyssey

With the bulk of our navmesh optimisations now in place with Update 7, alongside a number of other changes, our code team is now looking at further optimisations with an immediate focus on lighting, slated for release in Update 8. Further work is also underway for Update 9.
we've been told update 8 would have "significant improvements" to performance, but this statement makes it sounds like part of it was done on update 7 (which actually made it worse and a lot of stutters to some), and now update 8 will bring optimisations focusing on lighting? is that the reason we are having so low FPS? Can we expect significant improvements so some of can actually play at above 15 fps 4~5 months after release or nah?

Fleet Carrier Interiors

Following the incredible reception to the announcement of Megaship interiors, we are delighted to confirm Fleet Carrier Interiors will be coming to Odyssey in the coming months! You can expect more details on these very soon.

We hope that this update has given you plenty to be excited about as bring new and exciting experiences to the Elite galaxy. What we’ve shared today is just a snapshot of what we’re working on and more details will come on all of the above in future monthly development updates and across our other channels!
Thank you as always for your continued feedback and support.
this one is quite interesting to me, if we can actually see witchspace while jumping that would be MARVELOUS
(pls don't make it like another copypaste of concourses pls)

Also, can we expect a follow-up on these questions (or some small attention here) as sally does, or she's the only one dealing with the community around here nowadays? Don't think she alone can(or should) handle hundreds of notifications daily when there's more of you guys around =)
(also pls stop pinging sally for small stuff)

It’ was spoken that they will bring EDO on Track. And then they will check consoles and additional content.

clearly said, we’re fixing EDO and then we will check consoles, nothing was mentioned that there will additional content and something else.

The team have been incredibly busy working not only on optimisations and fixes but to bring new and exciting content to Odyssey.

Any news on when console development will resume, CMDR?

A lot of this sounds great. I will add to the kudos for everyone.

That said, I do have a couple of comments I would like to be added to the list for the devs considerations:

#1 Update 7 HURT my FPS badly.. I sometimes see SINGLE DIGIT FPS around settlements. I see the note about this above and really hope that this corrects my issue. I'd appreciate hearing more details on the struggles with performance. My FPS was locked at 144 in Horizons in space. In Odyssey in space I only see about 80. On foot I am seeing 20-35FPS typically. I have a 5600x, 3070, NVMe SSD, 32GB 3600Mhz DDR4... It's not a "top tier" system, but I believe it has more than enough horsepower for the game. (note that I play in 5760x1080) I recently watched a Drew Wagar stream where he tried various settings from 1280x720 LOW all the way up to 1920x1080 HIGH and he only saw about a 5-10DPS delta between the two. He's on a several-generations-old i7 with a GTX-1070. All of this really seems to tell me that this isn't about horsepower. In my opinion, the performance issues are the most impactful issue in the game right now. What's the problem and can we expect to see some significant boosts in the future? If I buy a 3080Ti because I love the game that much and I want to see 40+FPS ALL the time, will that be enough?

#2 I'm excited to see Fleet Carrier interiors mentioned. I understand that ship-interiors (for our regular ships) are a difficult nut to crack.. I wonder if it the player-base would react well to a more robust fleet carrier interior. Maybe some living quarters with a bed and stuff. Maybe a closet with all of our suits on display or maybe a hangar bay that would have much of our fleet in it? When I go to Inter-Astra and I look at my ships I see a picture of a large hangar with multiple ships in it. I love that. Make that a place I can go please. I can say, sadly really, that I have only docked at my carrier once or twice since Odyssey dropped. I am enjoying the on-foot gameplay and the lack of ability to go check missions on the concourse has made the carrier mostly useless to me.

#3 Update 7 significantly reduced the number of available missions on the mission board. Used to be I could easily jump in and grab the type of mission I wanted to do, now, often, I go to the mission board and cannot find the type of mission I want, for or against the faction that I want to work for or against. I'm sure you guys will fix it, but I wanted to mention it. Same stuff has happened on the in-ship mission boards in the past.

#4 I RP as a mostly lawful, definitely "good" guy, as I'm sure many CMDRs do... Think Han Solo / Malcom Reynolds type. Odyssey REALLY pushes my comfort zone. I am required to rob and steal, against lawful factions, in order to unlock engineers. I am highly encouraged to kill lawful factions in order to gain engineering components/materials. And when I do kill criminal factions it shows up on my "crime" stats as murders, which, I understand, in that criminal faction's eyes they were murders, so I guess it's ok to list them that way, but it does mess with my RP and my self-image in the game. Please be mindful that many of us don't view ourselves as wild animals running around the galaxy shooting anyone who stands in our way.

#5 Relates to #3 and #4... Certain engineering components are REALLY hard to come by and you need a bunch of them to progress your gear. Manufacturing Instructions are a good example.. You need hundreds of them to have a full compliment of gear. In the Update 6 mission board you would frequently see kill scav/kill criminal faction missions with 4 ot 5 as a reward. That was fine. In Update 7 I rarely see those missions with those rewards. Typically I'm getting those ONE at a time doing transport missions, or finding them ONE at a time at data terminals. I'm not suggesting you nerf the requirements, but when you look at the mission situation #3 above, make sure we can get some nice engineering rewards to progress our gear.

Thanks for reading.

When you release the Odyssey DLC for Console??? We would like to play this too... All PC player have done fisrt footfall and console players they will take the crumbs :(

So the new stuff is optimising ? Ahhh all becomes clear .
i know give them something "they want" so we don't have to fix the proper stuff . And the PC Gamers go wild 🤦‍♂️
