Development Update 4 - September

Next thing you know, they'll be telling us that the Panther Clipper and medium Gutamaya and Saud Kruger ships are on the way...

Hooray for everything

Where's Flimley ??? \o/

Why doesn't Gutamaya get put in the spell checker?

So the new stuff is optimising ? Ahhh all becomes clear .
i know give them something "they want" so we don't have to fix the proper stuff . And the PC Gamers go wild 🤦‍♂️
It doesn't always have to be a grey day. My guess is that most of the 'new' stuff was already planned to go into Odyssey pre-covid. Now, while the game is in bug fix and repair it makes sense to release these now and hammer bugs out in one go before the console launch.

Awesome news!
I hope if Colonia Engineers will have new modifications then one of them will have option to remove modifications from suits/weapons, refarm gear to place new modification is overkill for sure :p

Any indication when Update 8 will be released?

I have ED on PS4, and PC, and there's no way I'd expect EDO on a console until it's able to run as good as Horizons on PC. Even then, it must be a lot of optimizing to get it to console.

Four months.

To be fair.

some of your player base ...
The important player base ducks

Well....one segment of their player base.
The important segment goes prone

Well, you know my opinion on this i think. FD either need to go all in on a revamp or just ditch it. I'm tired of half-bottomed measures with the game. I'm not expecting (or even wanting) Star Citizen levels of detailization to the point that it takes years to get anything done. Hell, FD aren't exactly fast at making stuff anyway. But you know, either commit or don't bother... although based on feedback, in relation to Powerplay, its a case of don't bother.
I have this weird idea, seeing they've pretty much taken the engine to it's limits, with Odyssey, that in the background, they're also making a new engine and that ED, when final, will be all-in and on the new engine. All this stuff builds towards it...but thats a hope and a hunch, nothing concrete.

What about non combat?
How about semi-combat? I was watching the ships battle, while in a ground conflict, then was being redeployed after getting shot...and thought how fun it'd be to pilot the drop ships. Now that, I'd sign up for.

Looks good! Though you should definitely consider more seats for the Dropship, considering its stated role.

Please let us drop items in Fleet Carrier social spaces, so that I don't need to meet friends on planet surfaces when I want to give them weapon components or Smear Campaigns.

...Or even a new concourse vendor option, an "escrow service" for fair player-to-player trading. Each player gives the agreed stuff to the NPC broker, who then hands it over when both have met each other's requirements.

This is all very confusing as Im pretty sure many posters on here have stated there's nobody working on the game?

Or maybe with Kay Ross leaving it coincides with her releasing a swarm of programming AI to do all the work......

Therein lies the rub.

Always have to bear in mind that FDev is in the grand scheme of things "a smallish indie studio". They don't have ludicrous resources and infinite silly money cheat codes that other games do that allow the designers to add in absolutely anything people ask for (which is frankly a blessing.) They have to pick and choose the things they dedicate their time to, and at the moment that's "getting the game in the state its supposed to be in." The things that are being "added" are things that have been planned for a while (the new SRV was already found referenced in the alpha), adding the concourse to megaships is more or less copy and paste (surely none of us believe/expect a NEW concourse design for the megaships, do we?!?!), and the other bits referenced like the social spaces for Fleet Carriers and whatnot are things FAR more people have been shouting for than Powerplay stuff - which I get people feel passionate about (howyeh!) but are still in the minority unfortunately.
I would think the FC interiors are likely to be a cut and paste job as well. Still worth having though.

It all sounds good. We need bug fixing first, though, so I hope that's part of the plan. Performance and bugs are number one problem right now.

Some cool stuff, but update 8 doesn't look so hopeful for overall performance, and without improved performance, Odyssey activities are just too painful for those with performance issues.
Agreed. The navmesh optimisations in Update 7 didn't bring any measurable performance improvements, and if lighting optimisation bring similar performance improvements in Update 8 then we probably just have to accept that this is as good as it gets.

If FDev tells us that these lighting optimisation should translate to a 50%-100% performance improvement, then that would be great news, and something to look forward to. But they haven't, so I can only assume we will get a similar performance boost in Update 8 to what we had in Update 7 (i.e. none).

As you say - all the new features sound great, but it's all pointless if people aren't able to enjoy them.

Nice development update, my personal favourite are announced updates to missions .. looking forward to it. I think it is the best Development update which was given to us so far.

I however also hope there will come further performance improvements including fix to cockpit effects. FPS drops still are really bad in some of settlements (places) and without visible improvement of performance have all those interesting news about new things highly reduced positive impact on overal perception of Odyssey DLC.
