Development Update 4 - September

How can you say that?
U7 managed to break a lot of things on consoles too... you cannot break stuff if you dont work stuff...

I'm sorry but reality is reality and they're not lulling anyone along. They have said very clearly that development on the console version is on the backburner until the PC version is in an acceptable state when many companies wouldn't have even been that honest. They will let us know when they believe it's satisfactory and development continues. That's about as straightforward as it gets.

I also challenge that they're going to lose any mentionable portion of the console playerbase. The reason people are mad is because you want to play it. Let's all stop acting like it's some moralistic grand stand against the Big Bad Company and keep it real; you want to play Odyssey and you want to play it way sooner than later. I don't believe that pushing it back several months to get it in a playable state is going to cause anyone to just lose the desire to play it. Way more people will buy it than won't.
You're exactly right, they're mad because they want to play it, but put us on the back burner long enough and you'll get nothing but frustration, and eventually, people will be disinterested. Then you could lose a portion of your player base. All? No. And they'll likely make it up eventually. But sooner or later, those of us that want to play their game and can't, will give up.

We hope that this update has given you plenty to be excited about as bring new and exciting experiences to the Elite galaxy. What we’ve shared today is just a snapshot of what we’re working on and more details will come on all of the above in future monthly development updates and across our other channels!

Thank you as always for your continued feedback and support.

Thanks a lot for listening and for continuing working on exciting features. This pathway is what we need to make Odyssey the great expansion it was designed to be :)

EDO means Odyssey, I assume. In which case it remains an accurate statement, regardless of the recent update to Horizons (EDH): Console development of Odyssey is on hold indefinitely until the PC release is 'solid'.

"We do not want to rush into confirming any dates or changes this has on our console release, as we must remain fully focused on the core Elite experience. Only when we feel that the foundation of the PC release is solid, will we be able to re-lay our console roadmap on top." - D. Braben - July 2021

Maybe Odyssey is considered stable once it's got emotes and cowboy hats? Worked for Rockstar.

If only there was an established way to test and ensure such foundational stability before selling your product to the masses. I guess it's ok to rush when it helps your financial numbers in the short term... but not if it gives realistic expectations for investors / customers to make decisions that could be detrimental to short term financial numbers.

Got it.

So what you're saying is you actually do understand that there are different groups working on different things (which is standard in softdev), and you understand that getting new content added to Odyssey isn't actually impeding the optimization and bugfixing process because, again, different teams, but... the optics are more important to you?

That's rather nonsensical, don't you think? Perception is not reality, no matter how much you want it to be.

You do also realize that it's more likely than not that when Odyssey finally does come to console you will be getting the most current build available at the time and thus will have all this "new" content available to you all at once, right? This content isn't exclusive to PC in any way; you're getting it eventually too. This is new content that everyone playing Odyssey will have access to.

The way I see it you'll be getting a much more complete version of Odyssey right out of the gate than we did and that's not something to be scoffed at.
Perception is everything. That’s why they released this pile of dross in the first place. Companies literally live and die by their reputation and how they are perceived.

... and to think, that statement was made within the context of being more open an honest with communications.

So to those who thinks it’s a logical part, and try to shut down the critical site of the community ( consoles )

so think back before you get EDO when was the last new shiny thing that we received? The carrier? Right? So and now think about the step that this part is happened a long time ago. So we are patience and wait for the new era which was by the way delayed at this time, after this, a new delay take place, and now there is no mentioning in any way. In the financial report, there was nothing written about the console delay or something especially connected with the consoles?
Further more questions which request informations still get now answers, and this is not the fault by the CM‘s. They shout out for open communication but the consoles is treated with horrendous Silence in relation to EDO. And people try to explain us we should be calm and stay cool?

the pc cmdrs are the beta testa for us?

In a beta or Alpha the first thing should be to bring the game to live with all the basic elements, after this there comes new content?

some facts

-we waiting still since 3-4 years for any new shiny new things
-the clear message was, to bring elite in a vital and stable place, after this the consoles will take a recourse. There was no mentioning in any way (dev dairies or statements) that the would adding more content before fixing the game)
-it’s a fact, that the console EDO is per se dead, till someone decide to put the hands on it

it’s a complete clearly slap in our face, to see that EDO will get new features and content and HRZN get a total minor bug fix which brings more bugs into it.

its triggered me, when I see peoples told about whe should things see with logic, when there is complete no logic behind this.

FDEV DECIDE to bring elite on the THIRD PARTY LEVEL. This means all platforms need treatments, who cares when the delay is till next year, when we get clear information, four is in consoles there is beside the mini Update more then tiny communication about the future of elite.

my opinion, FIX EDO BEFORE BRING NEW STUFF INTO THE GAME.

Best statement 👍

The upcoming updates and content are fine for the most part but
"hostile agents attempting to intercept you while en-route" You guys couldn't help yourselves eh? That interdiction minigame is not fun, it's annoying.
"Four-Player Multicrew" I hope the fourth seat won't look out of place, I love the cockpit of some of those ships so please don't mess them up.

While I'm here, when are you guys going to work on the AI crew? Is it gonna stay a half-finished feature forever?

I do not want to play Odyssey.

  • I would like the new SRV.
  • I’d quite like some new ships and whatever else they subsequently decide to build on top of EDO.
  • I’d also like an improved console experience in general.

NONE of that can happen until they fix EDO so - personally - I don’t think they should be focusing on adding more content to Odyssey until it’s fixed either.

Adding more stuff into the EDO code base will only further disappoint console players whilst increasing the complexity of the code base leading to an increase in the time it takes to make it ready for console release in the first place.

1. Fix the code
2. Deliver platform parity
3. New enhancements / features

I have this weird idea, seeing they've pretty much taken the engine to it's limits, with Odyssey, that in the background, they're also making a new engine and that ED, when final, will be all-in and on the new engine. All this stuff builds towards it...but thats a hope and a hunch, nothing concrete.

That is a weird idea :D

Another tweak is needed for carriers.

The crew need to acknowledge we ho their CMDR is and not just treat them as another generic pilot. I'm your boss and I own this rig you're on dammit!

:D

I better be able to on the spot fire any npc workers on my carrier when I can see them face to face.

And so help me Danny Devito if I see a single one of them sleeping on the job I'll be selling the carrier to Ender.

It's been on hold for almost a year now, don't forget. I can only go by my experience as a PC and PS4/5 CMDR; the number of Elite players on PlayStation has dropped significantly since the beginning of the year, this time last year, or the year before. That's randoms in CG systems, friends playing Elite, Squadron members playing Elite, the number of posts on the console forums, etc. As well as volume data from EDSM Console Updater client trended over time. All significantly decreased.

Meanwhile the new consoles are setting all sorts of sales records compared to previous generations, at the same time Frontier have publicly stated that Odyssey has under performed sales wise.

With consoles being the main retail platform for gaming, maintaining the silence on Odyssey console development alongside spending finite development time on emotes - of all things - within the context of underwhelming DLC sales, seems a little strange and I think deserves to be questioned, and answered, on the game's discussion forums.

God....the hosing down that carrier would need before anyone could feel safe enough to not catch something.

Not sure it would be worth it. Might just have to fly it into the nearest sun (hopefully one hotter than 0c)
