Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

SQ42 secretly being polished would be a dream come true, but Chris' history of perfectionism stands against him. He can't just stick with a vision and carry it through to the end; he keeps having to pile new ideas on to something, or he thinks a of a new way something can be done and has work scrapped and development rebooted, and so on. So his projects are almost never released. It takes someone putting their foot down and saying "no, we're fine with this being the way it is, we are going to finish this and release it". And we know that SQ42 had apparently gone through multiple development reboots. Last we heard, half the levels hadn't even been greyboxed.

He sounds like a great visionary but terrible at completing projects.

Since server meshing seems to be the hold-up has there been any talk about just switching the PU over to Pyro rather than Stanton? Still just one system, so no meshing required.

After all, the game is an Alpha and seeing Pyro fleshed out might have been fun - assuming it is as finished as the demo. (Plus wasn't there another planet already finished and moved over, or was that to Nyx, I forget ...)

They of course could do that, or an even simpler solution: Implement jump gates, but if you enter one, disconnect yourself from the server (loading screen) and load into Pyro with your ship! Solved your meshing problem, Chris. When do I get paid?

But yeah, Planet wise Pyro seems mostly done, with Nyx' planets currently undergoing the terrain crafting process with atmospheres coming later.

yeah, but that doubles your server costs (plus you need the actual jump gates). And you split your alpha testers thinner. Whereas just flipping over to 'everyone in pyro now' should be just uploading the different assets. Probably :)

I bet the feeling after a Citizencon ending with 'we're all going to Pyro in 3.16!' would have had a more positive outcome. Though I don't put it past them to do exactly that when 4.0 comes along 🤔

They could simply just add more servers, they're using AWS, and have said before that "they are not going to run out of servers to open" so just double your server compliment and have half running Stanton, half running Pyro. Jump gates shouldn't be too hard as its just a nicely detailed space ring with some VFX inside it. And they can cut the wormhole too since it'd just revert to a loading screen when you enter it.

They cant cut stanton since refueling isnt in, Stanton is very small compared to Pyro and most ships wouldnt be able to make it across Pyro without the help of refueling ships or players carrying them.

Ah ok - I had no clue about that - thx!

In some ways that has me thinking "yes, that is a reasonable reason not to send everyone to Pyro", but I also can't help thinking "wow, 8 years in and no refuelling". Hopefully Pyro getting close will speed that up, sounds like it will be useful soon :)

Pyro and 4.0 I can't realistically see coming before Q4 next year at the earliest. Besides all the pre-requisites needed like jump points and mechanics, refuelling, server mashup shard things from Turbulent being absent with no date for them being included or even actively worked on... they only showed WiP concepts of all Pyro's moons and planets except for the 'gameplay' demo shot on Pyro 3 with cloud tech seemingly borrowed from Sqn 42.

It reminded me of a similar 'gameplay' demo we saw during the 2019 Citcon about Microtech...all that sneaking about with Ai that weren't just walking furniture, flowing canvas tarpaulins, helmet animations...Do I need to remind anyone that we still don't have anything close to that even 2 years after that 'gameplay' demo was shown to a whimpering crowd?

Yeah its a little odd but they only really needed to focus on Refueling recently with Pyro being more and more developed. Makes sense to try and flesh out Stanton first. the refueling ship is already in the game (Starfarer) and they even showed off a work in progress refueling demo in an ISC a bit ago:

Yeah my best bet is that all of the Pyro part of the demo was mostly faked. Then again they only really showed the entrance to the System, some jump point models and a few gas clouds anyway. Thankfully it seems they are moving away from this fake everything approach.

"Can't add Y because they need X."

Come on, bingo card almost full.
Well as for Refueling they have everything in place, really. The buying UI, docking mechanism, the Ship, refueling arm model and an actual purpose for it to be in the game (when Pyro comes that is).

It's still a curated proof of concept tech demo and nothing more. There were no dates at all as to when any of the features present in that demo will be added to the PU (if ever)...only guesswork from our point that it'll still be a year away at least...and what happened to the Aaron Halo belt to finish off Stanton? I'm still waiting to go park my Prospector up there :censored:

True, still their reel showed that they have a lot of the planets for Pyro already mostly done, from 2019s Citcon we still only had plain textures and a few gas clouds in Pyro. And to be honest, I dont really care that much that they didnt give us dates.

If anything, they'll miss them and there's gonna be the "hurr durr why is this not in? you told me the date for it!?" all over again. I think they learned to keep their mouth shut.

To be honest...as a regular player, I'd much rather they sorted the damned gameplay loops out long before they even consider opening up another system. Opening up Pyro with the way the PU stands, even assuming they sort refuelling out as a priority, would just be pure and utter pew related with no other gameplay content at all. Replacing Stanton with Pyro to suit a few folk more interested in not gaining a crime stat for ganking endless ships would be purgatory for everyone else bar them.

They will definitely need more gameplay before they introduce Pyro, or atleast introduce gameplay along with Pyro. Salvage T0 is still scheduled for 3.16 (we will see how long that stays there, probably not for long) And we have 3.15 with some medical features. Hacking T0 also scheduled to be done by the end of the year, and selling in Q1 2022.

I have a feeling that they will definitely have atleast some of these in before they add Pyro. As its still quite some time away.

I meant the sneaking about gameplay they showed back in 2019...not the Pyro jump gate related nonsense in the Carrack.

Either there IS nothing to show (Which I honestly doubt, the monthly progress reports are making it sound like they're in a final polishing phase or something)
Or they're holding it off for a grand reveal sometime later. A bit like the Odyssey announcement just dropping out of the blue but "Hey, yeah, Squadron 42? Remember that? Well it's released now. Enjoy"

I'm pretty sure by now the updates are created by the CMs running around departments desperately asking devs to say something positive about their progress. So, the devs are polishing some minor thing and make it sound bigger than it is. This pleases the CMs and CR and backers. Doesn't mean squat is getting done.

They are not holding off on a grand reveal. CIG have never been shy of showing off the most insigificant things and making them sound bigger than they are. If they had something close to finish they would show it.
