Drew Wagar's Thoughts

Even though ED takes place in some regressed, dystopian future, the insurance schemes are absolutely stellar (no pun intended). If you can get an exact engineered replica of your ship when it gets blown up, why wouldn't you when it gets stolen? ;)

Because it's a cash exploit.

When someone destroy your ship you can get it back for a price. Some cash is removed from the game (5% of the ship's value)
When someone is stealing your ship - it's a full cash transfer. If the original owner is reimbursed by the insurance at 5% costs, then the thief gets the entire ship for nothing

If the initial owner loses the ship, it will be a riot
If the ship is not lost it's a cash exploit / dupe

It doesn't have to be that simple. The all seeing eye would tag the ship as "Stolen", you'll have no docking privileges and of course the immediate attention of security forces wherever you go. You could lock out certain functionalities because the legal owner isn't operating the vehicle, et cetera.

Nah, I dont see that ever coming.
As i said, Elite is not a Hardcore Full Loot PVP MMO - and if ever comes open would be even more deserted or full only of non-engineered sidewinders and eagles

They will never go for ship stealing. This is not a Hardcore Full Loot PVP MMO
Well, they might... but it can only (really) be an Open only activity - although I suppose if someone was crazy enough to let me into their PG... It would certainly make open much more interesting, and drive those for whom any kind of conflict is abhorrent even further from 'social' play.

Is not that simple.
And no matter that design choice they go for, there will be plenty of voices to nuke them down.
Just look at the way outfitting work and how many different modules and modules sized one can fiddle with when configuring a ship.

IF they go for living quarters only, some will come to say that FD are lazy because the interiors do not match the unique outfitting their precious ship has.
And going for ship interiors that are a 100% match to the zillion of outfitting possibilities seems quite impossible to me.
My dream "Ship Interiors" DLC is an outfitting screen with a 3D cut-away of your ship, like a top-down map, that has empty boxes (slots) where you select physical modules that plug into these slots to build your own interior layouts. Things like hallways to interconnect these "zones" could be prerendered, but everything else is based on my loadout. It would basically be like a lite version of "The Sims" in the house spaceship design aspect.

To make this more enjoyable from a design / layout perspective, Frontier could add purely cosmetic modules like captain's quarters, kitchenette's, the fabled gymnasium for the Beluga, etc. Either that or ships like the Beluga could just have these special recreational zones hard-wired into the design. I mean, if I buy a Beluga, of course I want to see the stars from the observation decks and my zero-G swimming pool!

As for design work, the hard work is designing individual modules like cargo bays. One cargo bay of a particular size would work in all ships, based on ship design. Same goes for passenger lounges, etc, though it would be nice if passenger lounges were specialized when it comes to the passenger ships like the Dolphin (ie - windows). I could also see stylized modules based on ship manufacturer - the cargo bay of Cutter should look more clean and "posh" than the cargo bay of a Type-9, for example, but the cargo bay of a Type-9 would be identical to the cargo bay of the same size in a Type 6 or 7.

Anyway, that's my "dream" for ship interiors. I don't even think it's an unrealistic dream, since Frontier is the creator of Planet Coaster, which is basically what I describe but in a different genre. If anything, it should make Frontier's work easier, since they are just making a bunch if cubical assets that we the players have to "plug in" to make our own interior layouts.

My biggest caveat to this dream is that I believe Frontier gave up on visualizing interior ship volumes early on, instead making modules a spreadsheet stat. How else can they just keep adding more and more modules to the tiny Sidewinder, yet that's exactly what they've done over the years. To bring us semi-realistic ship interiors would likely require a balance pass on the size and number of modules many ships can be equipped with, and I just don't see that happening.

This thread is catching up the console one. It's good to see it's not just the console community that go around in circles.

Fair play CMDRs o7. One big happy family after all.

The question is, will Drew actually be back next year? 🤔

Depends. The old flame might reignite again.
Or FD might commission his talents again for another story

never say never.

Who has their money on ....

1) no ship interiors ever
2) cockpits only. Functional - walk in, sit down.
3) walk around the inside, up corridors, down corridors, into passenger cabins, and then inspect whichever of the 100's (1000's) of the available size/type/class modules you've installed, each individually crafted. Interview the passengers and serve them drinks. Use space hammers to fix a module while 4 NPC pirates are trashing your ship. Fight off a dozen boarders every time you lose an interdiction. Gaze upon your trophies in a commander's cabin (tm) with coffee machine and personal robot servant.

I would say 2 is very likely one day.

And yet elements of 3 is what I often see thrown around whenever many people talk ship interiors. Unfortunately, if FDev do provide #2, it will still make a lot of people very unhappy.

(I prefer boarding through the blue circle, and if we do get cockpits and ramps/elevators I sure as hell hope the teleport option is still available.)

That would make no sense whatsoever.

The entire outfitting system make little sense if you actually try to picture a real working ship around it.
As we have it now, it makes sense only from a gameplay/usability perspective but not from a functional/realistic/3d perspective

I will miss ED and I'm gutted Fdev took this turn but it's their choice, their game.
To bad......

There is nothing quite like it, the combination of semi-realistic setting, the lore, the flight model and the stellar forge is just so unique. I really miss it and it is a shame the devs didn't consider realizing the full potential of its USPs.

I wish someone would bolt on an old version of it or Oolite (?) into Space Engine.

I do understand why some people see Drew as "self-important", but I think that's because part of his job as an author is self-promotion. I've been in that position in the past, where promoting myself was necessary to promote my product, and I actually hated it. And once you do build a brand around yourself with "loyal followers", you feel a responsibility to communicate to them and be there for them. I get the sense this is where Drew is coming from, because he's pretty self-deprecating in his videos, while at the same time hyping up the existence of those videos in the first place.

I think this is the way with many content creators, like Obsidian Ant, Burr, etc. There are a few CCs out there who actually do seem to think they are the center of the universe, probably because they are American and we're raised to believe that we are the center of the universe, LOL. People who present themselves that way don't attract me at all. But Drew, Obsidian Ant, Burr, and a few others CCs have the right balance of confidence and humility, delivering their opinions in a soft-spoken but factual, non-emotional way, and I appreciate that and follow them for it.
