what nobody will actually see coming is the scrivener mutants threatening to destroy the data core if the university doesn't back off and disable the hypedrive lockout.

Then they'll bargain for the codes and instructions to reset the access codes so nobody can remote control their ship again in exchange for a device that will copy the data core ...which they will then give the university once the copying is complete at a drop location of their choosing. Otherwise the data core gets it.

But before they destroy the megaship they board it and use their memory-sucking eyespikes on the entire crew, because that's awesome and scientifically plausible!

Well, they are also master data collectors who've been out of commo for the last 2 hundred years but have encountered AND extracted many data sources of "who knows" origin and really they've already hacked the OU ships but the OU don't have a clue yet

They are mutants...so their ways can be as alien as one can imagine. eye spikes could be how they transfer knowledge from one generation to the next. So it's not necessarily even a violent act. Just how their mutant culture is.

poor OU ship hasn't realized that the scrivener ship has been venting reactor coolant directly in the path of the OU ship's heat ducts. and as anyone with even cursory knowledge of reactors could tell you, reactor coolant is incredibly caustic to organic material and degrades when vented to space ... as it degrades it releases a massive amount of radiation that it has absorbed from the reactor. So the OU ship is about to go into a safety shut down of it's own reactor after it's sensors detect high levels of radiation and coolant where it shouldn't be (leak detection) .

This will allow the scrivener mutants to then begin consuming the OU ship in it's maw. bit by bit. eaten alive.
