Elite Dangerous: Odyssey Update 8 Notes

Would love to hear what Sally means with 'significant performance' gains. Is that 10% more FPS? 100%? Would be good to know so we can see if our experience is as expected or not.

It's almost certainly going to be highly situational.

From the patch notes, I see a whole lot of stuff targeting GPU limitations, but only a handful changes that would meaningfully impact CPU limited scenarios. Since what I suspect to be the underlying cause for the most extreme issues I'm experiencing isn't listed in the patch notes, I am not expecting drastic improvements.

My entirely speculative prediction, based on the patch notes we've been given:

  • If fire or glass (both shader limited, thus far) are your main performance hangups, you'll see big improvements.
  • The loading stalls Update 7 introduced will be resolved.
  • The underlying engine and renderer haven't changed, and only low hanging fruit optimizations have been performed with regard to the CPU-limited side of things. So, if you were experiencing poor GPU utilization and associated performance dips before, it's probably going to persist.

Guess I'll find out for sure later today.
 
While we're waiting ....

Does anyone else using a gamepad find that, if the cable is knocked out of the controller and reconnected, ED then doesn't seem to see it any more until the computer is restarted, even though the Windows control panel test still shows it as working fine?

Don't even know if it's ED's problem, Windows or my particular pad, but it's damned inconvenient.
I dropped my controller a few times and now the connection is a bit dodgy. It resets every now and then but still works fine. Sometimes it'll stop working without making the disconnect noise but works fine if I reconnect.
 
Another long wall of text with fixes and implementations, but I bet they still insist Odyssey was a finished product.

Anyways I thank you for the notes and lets hope it all work as intended when patch is applied later on. Im hoping one day I can make my friend come back to this game and play without having hundred of issues.

I am currently inundated with tags and DM's asking "Will this issue be fixed though?" because certain ones some people are looking for aren't listed.
Also got lots of questions around the notes listed out, requesting further clarity.

I've made a note of the questions to get back to individuals on in responses here in the thread, as soon as I'm done making sure we stay on track for deployment this afternoon, but feeding back on individual issues you can't see listed in the notes will have to come a bit slower in discussions over the next few days or so, as we usually do.

Back asap with what to expect as part of the update rollout and timings shortly.

Hi Sally, thank you for being so busy. Would you relate on some new content with the Lore (Thargoids, Guardians, Far God) in Update 8 if there is any?

I never thought you were :) I have only an inkling of how busy you must be.

As for that mission state issue, I know how intertwined things can get, so my hope is maybe it's related to some of the other mission-ui related fixes, thus I'll be testing either way (with the expectation of it not being fixed yet).
 
Awesome notes as always. Some good fixes.

Im struggling with these ultimatum posts. People go from spots irritating bug to LITERALLY UNPLAYABLE within seconds. Its a video game like, its an awesome one but a game all the same. Have some spice melange and relax its all good we are getting there. Im hyped for the future of the game.

You should get Zac to do that for you after he lost to T-Bone in the PVP stuff last night as a forfeit :)

Cynical me reckons someone who suffers through 20fps getting 30fps post-patch 8 gets a massive 50% improvement = significant.

Non-cynical me is just hoping for not having to ever enable FSR again, and get a consistent framerate (I'm not even sure if I'm too cheeky asking for 60fps?) everywhere with no stutters. I already know I'm asking for the moon on a stick here, even though I shouldn't have to feel that way.

We'll see which attitude is the more realistic one later on I guess.
