DK2 & Elite - The Beginners Thread

335 pages. Thats how long the DK2 & Elite thread is today.

I received my DK2 today, and strangely enough I actually want to play with my Dk2, not read 300+ pages of a thread trying to find the useful titbits that it surely contains. I also figure I'm probbaly not the only one in this boat, so I'm hoping this thread can be more of a beginners guide with some very basic questions which as they get answered I'll try and compile into this 1st post.

Let me start it off:

* How do you re-center your view if it get's out of whack? - Use F12 (same as you use for TrackIR!)
* Is it normal that your eyes take a moment to focus on different elements? Things tend to look blurry until I look 'at' them for a second.
* Wow.. it really feels like I'm in my ship!!! (not a question, just f-ing fantastic)
* What are the different modes (Oculus Headphones etc, why does it say Headphones?) - This affects the soundscape when using teh Rift, pick the one that matches your setup for accurate sound placement.
* How do i see the FPS I'm getting? - Preferred Solution:
Afterburner seemed to be the most popular solution because you can view FPS directly in the Rift (comes with RivaTuner, set bottom right value to 300x300 which makes fps show top left on the HMD).
Another, less optimal solution may be to remove the left lens and use CRTL-F to display the FPS, however caution must be used as dust or cleaning the display WILL scratch it!

I'm sure I'll have more questions, but that's a good start. if anyone else has beginner tips they'd like to share, please do.

You need to map a button in controls to reset the view.
It is not normal for your eyes to take time to focus on anything, try recalibrating your IPD, changing the position the rift sits on your head (there is a sweetspot), checking you have the correct lenses in and changing the distance using the dials on the sides.
Yarp.
You need to pick either headphones or speakers depending on your setup. If you're wearing headphones then the sounds need to move as your head moves, if speaker they remain static.
Easiest way is to press CTRL + F, remove the left lens and look at the bottom left hand corner. You can run fraps etc... if you want but removing the lens is simple IMO.

Just wanted to pop in to say good job on this thread!

Setting up the rift can be daunting. In the end it is really simple. Just set it to extended, fire up the game and put it on secondary monitor and the 3D to oculus headphones.

Getting falcon 3.0 to run on a 386, now THAT was a challenge!

Another tip I would add is "don't forget to adjust the Oculus detail setting in the graphics options menu, it's a bar right at the bottom of the settings list and is set to the lowest setting by default".
This means most new players won't be able to read the HUD if it's left in this position.

F12 is to recenter but you can assign it to any key in the options

* Is it normal that your eyes take a moment to focus on different elements? Things tend to look blurry until I look 'at' them for a second.

Perhaps an issue with the IPD. This may fix it and other issues:

Yes, yes it does :D

* What are the different modes (Oculus Headphones etc, why does it say Headphones?)

with headphones - the sound is tracked along with your head movements.

* How do i see the FPS I'm getting?

Like others suggested CTRL+F and unscrew the left eye piece

Thanks for the responses, I dont know why I didnt hit F12... I've been using it with teh track IR. Just the excitement of the new toy I suppose.

It really was pretty simple to get up and running, though I'm still struggling a little with the adjustment of the view, but i suspect becuase I have one eye thats worse than the other this will always be an issue until we can use prescription lenses.

I tried the second lens set, with my glasses on, but the chromatic aberations were awful.

Another questions, this may be related to my particular setup but I'm not sure...

It is suggested everywhere I read that you set your refresh rate to 75hz. However mine is locked on 60hz. is this because that is the max refersh rate of my other monitors? (My rift is plugged into the HDMI output of my card, my 2 other monitors are using the Display Ports.)

From searching around - if you make the rift the primary display then the refresh rate can go to 75Hz. Seems to make a big difference in quality for me.

Not sure if you can have rift and 2 monitors, but, for rift plus 1 monitor, set up for multiple displays. Then lower the resolution on the monitor until you can have 75 Hz.

CRTL-F and removing the lens works, but maybe a bit clunky? When I asked, Afterburner seemed to be the most popular solution because you can view FPS directly in the Rift (comes with RivaTuner, set bottom right value to 300x300 which makes fps show top left on the HMD).

So from what I've read, if the other monitors dont support 75hz, the Rift will not allow it to be selected. My monitors wont go past 60hz no matter what resolution I set them to, so it looks like I need new screens! The option within Elite is locked at 60hz. Seems this is the case even in direct mode.

OK.

So I have been able to force the refresh rate to 75hz. I had to download a utility call CRU from here: http://www.monitortests.com/forum/Thread-Custom-Resolution-Utility-CRU I was then able to add extra refresh rates/resolutions so I added 75hz to 'overclock' my monitors.

After a restart I was able to go to my screen reslution, advanced settings and choose 75hz versions of my normal resolutions. In game, the resolutions that I had added 75hz to now have an option to change the refresh! next step is to choose the optimal resolution

..... I've found the best experience has been with Direct mode, in fcat I have a hard time getting anything to work with Extended mode but that may be because teh Rift is effectivly my third monitor ......

Hi Gomisan,

I like the idea of Direct mode, easy to use and should be faster. However at this time I believe it's considerably slower than Extended mode and needs more work (it is getting better). Extended mode is a bit clunky/difficult to setup - but in the short term IMHO it gives a better game experience (i.e. higher fps / low persistence etc).

Direct mode would be nice and I hope they improve it soon.

Cheers
Mark

*More detail :
My GPU = GTX 970 and ED graphics preset = Low.
In extended mode I get a solid 75 fps in the station/hangar and space.
In direct mode a solid 37.5 fps in the station/hangar and up to 75 fps in space (37.5 fps means no low persistence, which causes an ugly echo image effect).
* How do i see the FPS I'm getting? - Remove the left lens and use CRTL-F to display the FPS

. This is a bad thing to recommend to new rift users! from my expierence you dont remove the lenses except if you need to clean them. why? beceuse you are exposing the samsung note 3 screen to any dust that falls in if it comes in you gonna have a really hard time to clean it without scratching the display! there is no protective layer inside and once u scratch it the lenses will enlarge it so its BIG. atleast for DK2. CV1 will have plastic layer of somekind or everyones unit will be ed within months. i recommend to put the rift upside down when cleaning so no dust can get in. even the lenses are hard to not scratch ive had mine for 3 weeks and ive got scratches if you care about this use the suplied cloth and DONT wipe in circle motion(even if you are carefull) but rather from center to sides gently.
im on my cellphone but saw this and needed to put it out there you are only risking yourself a really bad time cleaning even a single dust particle.

In options I see vsync on, I have checked in nvidia control panel and it is off, and in the xml file I have set it to false, but it is still on...how do I turn it off?

Thanks, interesting observations. I certainly didn't feel that my FPS was lacking while playing, but I'll check it out tonight with the tip mentioned above for showing FPS. I'll post some info about my settings and rig when I do so.

Cool I would be interested to check if others are getting the same issue :)

I ordered some lens protectors 3 sets for £5 kind of price. Put them straight on the rift on arrival and I can scrub away happily with the wiping cloth

I don't know if they are available for the OR, but I bought a glass screen protector for my iPhone 6 and its a remarkable thing, zero light diffusion from what I can tell.
