What did you do in Planet Zoo today?

I started a new zoo recently in sandbox. It's my first zoo in a terraformed map.

So far I've only got an entrance section with camels, African wild dogs, and a desert house (brown snake, rattlesnake, gila monster, desert scorpion).
Planned section: "Land of Giants" containing both elephant species and giraffes.
Planned section: Tropical animals, no name for this section yet. Contains cassowaries, African buffalos, babirusas, among others (still undecided).

My main challenges will be:
  • building elephant habitats (never built for them before) and obtaining the elephant reward (breeding both species in one zoo).
  • building an elephant boat ride (never done a boat ride before).
  • deciding on zoo sections and how to make use of the terrain.

Pictures later today!

Made a tiger enclosure but for some reason the pictures won’t upload. Ideally it would be for Sumatrans but I have Bengal tigers in it now.

Did you check the file size? Most of the time when the pics won't upload it's because the size exceeds 1mb.

Let me add to that:
- Cool Panoramashots
- multiple viewing angles from all around the zoo
- a hilly trail that looks down over your zoo, making a beautiful view from both the top and the bottom of your zoo

Try if it helps to change them to jpg if they are saved as png because it's probably because the Files are too big. I'd love to see it

Good idea! :) I'll update the challenges.

First, here are some pictures of what I have so far.

Here is the dryland entrance area (there will be multiple entrances). Camels to the left, wild dogs to the right, desert house in the middle (with brown snake, rattlesnake, gila monster, desert scorpion). I like wide paths, to prevent clogging.

The camels, which are in a walkthrough habitat. Because these are domesticated animals, I decided to make them walkthrough animals. The camels are confident and don't get stressed out, but they can still take a break from people in a private shaded corner to the right.
People who don't want to walk through the camel habitat can take the smaller path to the left. Will make the staff path disappear out of sight later, using rock work.

Figured some people here might enjoy these! I sank shingled roofs into the ground, making them look like wildlife grid (also known as cattle grid). Hooved animals can't stand on these bars, but people can walk on them. This makes them ideal for containment! In game, I make it work by disabling animal escapes.

Food court on the left, desert house in the lower center, small food court with raised view of the wild dogs in the center, and at the top is the African wild dog habitat, which is built to resemble a village. As you might have noticed, I dislike using the habitat barriers provided by the game, and like to use building structures, custom fences, rock work, and terrain to keep animals in their habitat.

Right side of the wild dog habitat, with a closer look of a custom fence (+- 2m high wooden fence with uneven top, separated by African poles, and lined with painted African shields). The village buildings are provided as blueprints (I'm not a great builder). On the left you can see the campsite of carnage. You may guess what happened there.

Private wild dog quarters on the left, and car crash in front.

Land of Giants in progress, but I'll leave it like this for a while until I get to it. The water is in, the tunnels are made, the boat ride is placed (blue). Indian elephants will go to the right (purple), African elephants will go to left (red). Giraffes, unsure.

Started on the hilly trail. Also made African buffalo habitats with stables. The animals are in and now I can dress up the habitats, making it lush and bushy. There are 3 habitats for them: females with future calves (left), males (right), and a mating pen (far right, no animals right now). The cows and bulls will be kept separate for practical reasons.

Thought about how dangerous it would be to have a Walk through Enclosure with Bactrian Camels. Then I've realized that it would probably be relatively safe due to how tiny they are😂
That Zoo looks really nice

Love that Wall on the Backside. Are those Rocks or the Fake Tree? (also like to turn them around. They are nice Podests for Sculptures)
Thank you!
The wall is made out of the fake tree that I just turned around. I have seen this technique in some YouTube videos and wanted to try this out as well. And I have to say it looks really good, the fake tree has such a nice texture.

Thank you! 😃
I didn't know camels were that dangerous? They are domesticated after all.
Everything can be dangerous and the guiding rule is, if its larger then you it propaply can squad you like a fly and if its smaller then you it has a nasty bite.
Afterall there are no handouts in nature, only the best addapted survived and in the most cases these arnt the pushovers.

For an example, hares are cute, right? Did you know that they commonly fight one vs one with raptors and often come out on top, defending themself and fending the raptor of?
Thouse guys are tough, and you propaply wpuldnt expect it and thats with mist creatures, including humans

Cows are also domesticated and you really shouldn't just walk over a Meadow with them (at least if they don't know you).
There are Cases of Bactrian Camels injuring and I think sometimes even killing People. Don't know if the Dromedary (if we'll ever get it) would be better suitable for a walk through Enclosure

Camels and dromedarys can kick all around and not only what is behind them, like horses. Who are domesticated as well but can be very dangerous when you don't know how to handle them or if they feel you don't belong in their territory.
Rule of thumb would be: Everything that kicks to fight of anything that bothers them is not good for a walkthrough habitat ;D
