Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

The black walls, empty elevators and not rendering parts the scenery is a recurring thing, it reappears every couple of patches...the assets aren't loading from the server. It's not in the slightest bit hilarious, especially not in 3.15 since falling through those voids of death loses all your gear, over and over again. There's also no workaround except for changing servers and hoping when you do jump in that it's not overloaded or on the way out as well

But the faithful assured me that assets not loading was because I didn't have it installed on a SSD or my graphics card was too weak or i didn't have enough memory. It was always my fault that assets were not loading, not the game's!

The assets are already there, locally, in the client. IMHO If they have not loaded it only means that the server didn't instruct the client to load them. That would mean that the server-side streaming (that determines which objects and locations the server currently tracks and knows about in its bubble) is at fault. Something didn't load from the db, basically. So what @Mole HD said.

So... the faithful were wrong! shocked pikachu face

In other cryengine related news, apparently people can evade a ban in New World by either using Steam's family share feature or by changing their email address on Steam.

Seems like Amazon are competing with CIG for hilarity at the moment.

Yes. It would be an issue of the HDD/SSD only if the assets finally loaded, albeit with delay (server instructs the client to load them, client takes its time). But if the client is not even aware that it should load part of a location, it looks like the server actually forgot about it, or never knew.

How this is done exactly, I am not sure. IMHO locations are divided into sections, the server knows which sections are "relevant" (should be visible on the client) at any given moment and signals it to the client.

The loading from an HDD didn't help matters with slow loading or drawing in of textures etc, certainly used to be an issue 3 or 4 years ago, the same can be said of running it on 16Gb or less of RAM with not a big enough pagefile set... but the servers are always at fault for those types of missing scenery, especially elevator doors, vanishing corridors or missing ship textures. Nowadays with everyone running SC from SSD's of one form or another as well as tweaking settings to get the most out of a PC running SC...you can't go blaming the hard drive :)

"Daddy, why are you wearing a bunny hat and a crossbow?"

You invoked bunny man!

After the shuttle ride, I went looking for the starport, I saw a black wall, which looked like it should be rendering a hallway. So seeing as all other ways to go only lead to the shuttle, I went into that black wall. I saw for a moment it leads into the starport, but then tumbled and fell and ended up waking up in the bed again. Ok, so I tried again. I did the same thing and ended up at the same wall.
That's paywall physicalized.

That's not how client-server games work. The client has the authority on loading static assets, the server just validates and confirms position set by client.
Of course, given that we are discussing Never Been Done Before In An Obviously Stupid Way, I am not surprised.

It's positional desync...some patches, it's not as bad or as obvious when playing, others... like the current PTU build...it's ridiculous bordering on unplayable. It's so bad in the latest patch that you can get out of the bed in the hab, exit into the corridor and be halfway to the elevator then be be magically snapped back to lying in bed again.

Summary: Faithful upset that showing actual gameplay to friends usually doesn't work out. Smiles after showing them curated vids misrepresenting the actual state of the game deceive his friends and makes them think its better than it is.

Now, how's that for cultish behaviour?

Still, at least most of the comments are sane and calling him out for it.

I wouldn't say it was particularly cultish...considering most of the other cult members are calling him out ;)

Ha, SQ42 being launched two weeks today ?!? From the snippets we have been shown to full release .... hmmm ...... I would be very happy if that was correct.

Perhaps it means those calling him out aren't cultists... although to be fair, i didn't check usernames to look for the usual suspects.
It's always been a thing with SC, you can play it on your own or with org mates for hours at a time with no issues...but the minute you try to show it to someone who's never played, it'll 30k every 5 minutes :D

It is what it is...and most of us who play accept that despite the constant frustrations involved. If you can't, or try to portray SC as something other than what it is, warts and all...you're not doing yourself or anyone else any favours :)

That happens after your client had loaded the required assets and teleports you back, not draws you a physicalized paywall. In proper games, that is.

Don't get your hopes up. This is what you will get in two weeks:

Hmm. What if you show it to someone who had played SC before? Will it behave?
If yes, then I have an explanation: you can't peep with your own eyes until you pay Chris some money!

Thanks! will keep that in mind for next time. And... it was sorta funny the first time :) I saw a very distorted panel with nuts and bolts. Im guessing that was one of those images that gives the illusion of depth, when viewing from angles.
