New 25 essential habitat animals META-WISHLIST

orangutan
gorilla
bonobo
chimpanzee
red ruffed lemur
black white ruffed lemur
ring tailed lemur
capuchin monkey
japanese macaque
mandrill

The game lacks primates is a BOLD statement.
Let's break this down then:
  • Great apes - Great representation in the game, although the Orangutan animations are all wrong.
  • Lemurs - Fine representation, could be expanded.
Now for the monkeys:
  • Gibbons - 0 species
  • Old world monkeys - 3 species:
    • Mandrill - Great inclusion
    • Japanese macaque - a bit niche, but great
    • Proboscis monkey - locked to zoos within its natural region, barely exists in captivity
  • New world monkeys - 1 species:
    • Colombian white-faced Capuchin
There are a few problems with the current roster of monkey (4 species overall):
  1. Zoos tend to have very abundant mid-sized monkey collections, and this limited roster doesn't allow to make a realistic monkey area in a zoo
    • And if you do use these 4 species, it is always the same 4 specis in every zoo
  2. Of these 4 species, only 2 (Mandrill and Capuchin) are actually abundant in zoos, and the others are only kept in highly specialized facilities, making them quite immersion breaking for a small generic zoo.
  3. Entire common-in-zoos monkey groups are missing in the game with no decent alternatives, limiting the ability to make realistic zoos. From the top of my head:
    1. Babboons
    2. Gibbons
    3. Colobuses
    4. Guenons
    5. Tamarins
    6. Howler/Spider monkeys
  4. All the primate diversity of South America (which is abundant in zoos) is currently carried by a single species, which makes realistic south american areas hard to make, and repetitive between different zoos.

I'mma just check what is ,,common in captivity monke,, according to zootierliste. Attention! Heavily europan biased.
Let's say above 50 zoos only. If there wont be representative , then primate with highest number..

New World Monkeys (spider monkeys/howlers):
  • Colombian black spider monkey / 50
Titis & Sakis & Uakaris:
  • White-Faced Saki / 112
Not enough monke (highest representative, because group dont have one with over 50)
Night Monkeys:
  • Grey-handed Night Monkey / 22
Langurs:
  • Javan Lutung / 26
Colobuses:
  • Mantled Colobus / 48
Tarsiers:
  • Eastern tarsier / 1
Galagos:
  • Senegal bushbaby / 39
Lorids:

Indri & Sifakas:
  • Crowned Sifaka / 7
Dwarf Lemurs & Mouse Lemurs:
  • Gray mouse Lemur / 27
Aye-Ayes:
  • Aye-Aye / 6
Some conclusions:
  • African monkeys are kinda medicore/niche beside green monkey, barbary macaque and hamadryas baboon.
  • Actually howler and spider monkeys arent common in zoos.
Primates that actually lack in the game if you really stick to ,,realistic zoo,, theme :
  • Marmoset & Tamarin
  • Gibbon
  • Baboon
  • Squirell Monkey
Everything else would be fine addition, but not necessary.

Simple request:
I've noticed that there are several bears requested! Can you unify them and just put Bear and then the amount of votes each sub species got like you did the Leopards? It will declutter this list a little bit.

If general animal lists are now being compiled, one I have looked at are gamebirds - the meta wishlist has a total of 49 votes for 15 species of gamebird:
Helmeted guineafowl - fourteen votes
Eastern wild turkey - ten votes
Golden pheasant and Western capercaillie - four vote
Lady Amherst's pheasant and ocellated turkey - three votes
Northern helmeted curassow and red junglefowl - two votes
Black grouse, Cabot's tragopan, common pheasant, greater prairie chicken, green peafowl, red grouse and Reeve's pheasant - all one vote each

That's a great anslysis! One of the best I've seen someone do in here.

One point regarding Howlers and spider monkeys; they are much more common in american zoos according to zoochat, and in Europe are common, but spread over several species (compared to other groups, for example baboons only spread over 4 species).

So measuring by number of zoos for a single species leads to misrepresentation of more diverse genera and families.

Northern Luzon Giant Cloud Rat
Would like to have this one. Only 2 Rodents so far. Giant Pouched Rats would also be really nice to have but I think if I would need to choose one, I'd choose this one

Other categories could be:
  • Old world monkeys
  • New world monkeys (these are both actual taxonomic groups)
  • Lemur
  • Rodent (not Capybara)
  • Tortoise
  • Crocodilian
  • Pinniped
  • Caprine (goats and such)
  • Bears

Also, I'd add marmosets to the Tamarin categoty.
Why should the Capibara be excluded from the Rodent Category?

can I just say "more subspecies" here? personally, i would enjoy having 20 different kinds of lions (for example) that all look basically the same. Especially if some would be "extremely rare" to find, and can breed with each other but those lions become "wothless" and can't be released, only traded. But i feel like this might be niche opinion.
Would absolutely love this. Just fear it would become some kind of ****** Zoo Tycoon (2013) Situation where we get a Lack of more unique new Animals. Also of course the Subspecies shouldn't all just look the same

Colombian black spider monkey / 50
Would love to have a Spider Monkey in the Game. They look really nice

For the Leopard it makes Sense. But for Bears not really. One Person might want the European Brown Bear, Syrian Brown Bear, American Black Bear, Spectacled Bear..... and this would make it more likely to get something that no one or almost no one wants like the Qinling Panda of which only one Specimen was kept in Captivity so far. Most People that want a Leopard would probably be happy no Matter what Subspecies we'll get

Black grouse, Cabot's tragopan, common pheasant, greater prairie chicken, green peafowl, red grouse and Reeve's pheasant - all one vote each
Wait, do I understand this correctly? Each one of them only has one Vote so far? I need my Green Peafowl and Prairie Chicken ☹️

I'm not saying I don't want more primates.

I'm saying they are well represented. And they are....there's 11 or 12 in the game.

It would be like saying there's not a lot of felines in the game...it's not true.

People are not talking about primates in general. They are talking about monkeys (and sometimes gibbons get dragged into it)

No. If you had actually read it....the quote was literally this "the game lacks in primates"

Maybe I wasn't clear who I was speaking to in my post? 💁‍♂️

Either way, the game is still lacking. Primates are among the most ubiquitous species in zoos. So many species are endangered or at-risk, and they're extremely popular attractions. The game has hardly any compared to what would be available for a real zoo.

Same with literally every taxonomic group.

What taxonomic group in PZ is extremely well represented like in a real zoo? African ungulates? I (respectfully) say no again.

I'd argue primates are the BEST represented taxonomic group in PZ and that's ignorantly without looking at the roster.

Maybe large cats are better represented, or bears? But primates are on a short list of very well represented animals in PZ. But to each their own 🍻 If you think eleven species of primates is lacking representation I doubt a paragraph will change your mind.

Dont get me wrong I still want this and would pay for this...
  • Gibbon/Siamang
  • Baboon/Gelada
  • Howler Monkey
  • Snub Nosed Monkey
