Only aspect I am willing to concede is that you shouldn't need scientists for Sandbox, for everything else its all huge exaggeration. This is the phenomenon I always find weird about communities surrounding games, they hold contradictory positions and there are always going to be people upset with a decision regardless. People want deeper management and at the same time they don't like it when they get it because it involves some thought and effort. If you try to play JWE2 like JWE, then you are going to have a bad time because you can't just set and forget your scientists.
If you actually use some foreplanning you can get a jump on the scientists before they turn into a bottleneck. Research and build a Staff Center early, research scientist training and if you hire specialized scientists it can pay dividends. The skills they have to start with are less important than their growth potential and prioritize the research you want and need ahead of time. It's not a massive undertaking or anything, its a tradeoff like any functional and decent system.
I think a lot of this is coming from people who aren't planning out ahead of time and are using 3x speed on time controls and rushing for Aviaries, Lagoons, and every species they can get theirs hands on ignoring the less visibility stimulating research. Time is a precious resource in itself, use it wisely otherwise you are going to feel like you are just babysitting your staff. More than anything, relax, its a game just take some time to enjoy it. If you don't enjoy it, that's fine, maybe this type of game isn't for you, try another game or genre that better suits you.
