Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

Its one thing that constantly confuses me.

Any other company and and by this point the community would be tarring and feathering the devs.

Instead they just keep on giving them more money.

Its been said before, but succeed or fail, there are whole theses waiting to be written about the crowdfunding of SC.
I keep looking at Shroud of the Avatar and how that played out.

The release was an utter failure (and was grossly incomplete compared to what was pitched in the Kickstarter). The community was whittled down to a very few hardcore believers who continue to toss money at the game.

SotA ended up going F2P to reach a wider audience, and it was ultimately sold to one of the devs (giving Garriott an exit), who continues to work on the game [for certain values of "work"].

Hey, maybe Catnip Games can pick up Star Citizen and everyone can finally get those crossover items!

Its the one where CR compared the development of SC to Kennedy's speech about going to the moon, because CR can't help compare himself and his products to great things, like comparing himself to Francis Ford Coppola. The guy is an absoloute narcissistic hack.
I think he was probably very close to also add in the quote from Terminator whereby SC and/or the "StarEngine" would become self aware also sometime in 2020 or so.

Like I said, most of us got over it. I made my statement of discontent quite clear back in 2016 when I withdrew my funding...bought back in a year later when I saw a little improvement. That's about where it's at. What was said and done back then was back then and repeating it ad nauseum isn't going to change it...this is now, it's still bimbling along at a snails pace but still bimbling along, some things have changed, some things haven't 🤷‍♂️

Anyway, from the letter, the quote is right there.

He finishes that part with

LOOOOL
You know how you parked your car in the ditch next to the road once? How the the engine revved up when it lost traction of the road? That's when your tech spun up. Of course when it gripped the sludge in the ditch it instantly got bogged down again. Same happens with SC, just without the revving up part.

Your reaction makes perfect sense. Take a stance with your wallet, that's part of the attrition process with games and drawn-out projects. Rub people the wrong way, and they stop giving handouts.

But there's the other way of "getting over it" that involves people forgetting (willfully or not) those infractions and continuing to make purchases, get subscriber flair, etc. that has led to half a billion (USD) in funding and no incentive for anyone to buckle down and make a thing that works - even if they have to iterate upon it after the initial release. And that's what I'm more point to, as opposed to people like yourself who used the only leverage Chris Roberts pays attention to - money (or the lack thereof).

Hey, they still have more than a month to release server meshing!
But I feel like that's not a "quote" as you can't find this in the chairman letter.

Didn't explicitly say that they were gonna get it into player's hands next year. "Hoping".
Again another very nice example of people from the Refunds sub misquoting things to seem like promises!
"He said 'hope' so he really didn't mean it. What do you mean Server meshing with thousands of players in the same instance isn't coming in the first iteration? What do you mean server meshing was roadmapped for Q4 2018? Then said to be coming again in 2019, then again in 2020? Pah, this isn't a 'bait and switch' you FUD spreader. Those are hopes and dreams. Please absolve them of that. And buy ships in the next sale."

Apart from the die hard faithful, most of us as backers and regular players haven't forgotten or wilfully ignored anything from back then at all. There were thousands of us who refunded, a few of us bought back in...most didn't. I'll think you'll find most longer term backers are along the same lines as myself..."When it's on my SSD and not before." Most of us have paid what we're going to pay, now it's Ci¬G's turn to put up or shut up.

I'm still interested in what I play and what eventually does turn up by way of patches and updates...all the other marketing related guff I totally ignore...the sales events are there whether I like them or not, they're not for me and others like me who've been around a few years...they're for the new cash. We've already done paying and are of no interest to Ci¬G or it's marketing snakes. It's business, nothing more. I don't do the business speculation thing, I play what's there and hold on to a slight hope for what isn't :)

They've smooshed a bit too much together for convenience there, sure. (Treating iCache as Server Meshing). But you trying to dismiss the broader implications is pretty absurd.

Because:

A) CIG initially roadmapped Server Meshing for 2018.

B) That same Chairman's Letter talks in terms of certainties for ultimate delivery:

This will allow us to greatly expand the number of the players beyond 50 to thousands concurrently in the same “instance”...
All [these key technologies] are well into development and the question is no longer “if” but “when”.

C) In his next letter Chris talked about being confident of delivering at least one of those (very late) aspects in 2021:

While we didn’t deliver a few of the major tech milestones we had hoped to this year like iCache and Server Meshing, we’ve made a lot of progress towards these goals. We are confident that you will see at least one, if not both, debuts of these important technologies next year. Likewise, we plan to open up more play tests next year for Theatres of War, our combined arms game mode within Star Citizen of rapid battles on foot, in vehicles, and in space that many of you have been inquiring about.

At what point does this kind of behaviour become problematic? Stating that these improbable-sounding things will definitely arrive, as Chris has. Pointing to the next year, and the next year. And the next...

At what point are you going to think: Hey! Maybe I should stop defending this kind of crap? ;)

Or, as we discovered, not thousands in the same instance but maybe 50+ in the same shard...

It's almost like there's a pattern of behavior that's endemic to the leadership at CIG.

Fudsters, CR never promised anything. They hope to maybe, at some point, look into the possibility, of perhaps..

The only thing for sure is that there will be a ship sale bonanza going into the Xmas period. CR might even make his annual appearance in the forums to write 10,000 words promising nothing. 😅

You're behind the times...ship sale starts tomorrow until Dec 3rd...

I've had a reshuffle of ships and store creds so I'll be getting my 'Lesnick of War' (Starfarer Gemini) back plus something else flyable/useful to take up some space in the hangar. :)

The future or server meshing is here.
A perpetual task if trying to join friends already in game...but why didn't he just ask the party leader to return to menu and relaunch dragging them all into the same server? It seems like sometimes Mikey just plain forgets how to play the game ;)

But CR is still talking complete and utter nollocks. You can say it was different back then, but it is no different now. Ok, CR appears to have been muzzled more or less since the new year, but i'm sure he will pop up again around Christmas to sell more dreams.txt. If he doesn't, and CitCon was a real indication, it will probably mean he has been gagged.

From The Verge:
In September, Arcaro pleaded guilty to participating in both parts of the [BitConnect] scam while allegedly posting videos online to make fun of BitConnect doubters.
Sound familiar?
