State of the Game

Disney have ruined the art of filmmaking and story telling and turned it in to a formula designed by committee to appease shareholders.
They are the worst thing ever to happen to the arts but people still suck up the near identical superhero drivel films.

In addition their lawyers are nasty and their parks are the most awful place I've ever had the misfortune to visit.

Other than that, lovin' the mouse.

I didn't mind the final three films, they weren't as bad as the hardcore fanboy lads made them out to be but certainly could have been better. (Still better than the prequels though)

There's a famous(ish) rant that Freddie Prinze Jr. goes on from a few years ago that's more or less bang on - they weren't made for middle aged fellas like me. They're for kids, the next "generation" of fans. Once that sinks in, the whole "ermagherd, Disney is ruining everything" sort of shifts. Instead I see my little four year old (at the time) dressed up as Rey, absolutely glued to them.

Asking for lightsabers for Christmas instead of Barbies. Wanting to go to Disney, not to see princesses or Mickey Mouse, but to see the Millennium Falcon and meet BB8. As much as the 20 stone lads living in their mam's box room might hate them, just for that reason alone I think they're fycking brilliant.
I actually liked the prequels. Nice slow pace, beautiful setting. And Last Jedi I can watch on repeat.

Sorry, that previous post looked like an ender style rant.
Here's a catmouse.

I disagree. Last Jedi was fantastic, but anything Abrams put his hands on turns to garbage. I’m glad he only mucked up Star Trek TOS as that series the worst of the lot. But whoever let him at Star Wars should be given a long hard Paddington Stare.

I just like good, consistant stories, the latest trilogy unraveled very quickly into "who, wait, what, where did they go, magic, what, goth rage, who again, oh he dead..." etc...in no particular order.
I understood 4, 5, 6 when i was a kid...new ones, not so much.

The funny thing is I'm not even remotely close to being considered a Star Wars fan but I watched them with my kid and while he enjoyed the OG ones even he hated the new ones except for Rogue One and the Mandalorian series.
Even the Mandalorian - starts off well, nice mystery and a quest - but by the end of S2 (IIRC) I was thinking - this is going to go on forever isn't it?

The Marvel films: I really liked all the last phase ones, but really can't be bothered with the new ones - not even sure why as they'll be as super-slick. I think it's the fact that they love following the source comics which have a habit of restarting and removing all consequences 'oh noes Thor lost an eye ... oh here's a replacement' 'half the universe has been vanished ... and they're back'. That was going on before Disney had a hand IIRC.

Some of the Marvel/Disney standalone stuff is still good - really liked WandaVision, that had some real heart.

(Then again I'm actually liking the current Dr Who series, so I may not be in line with internet beliefs :) Chibby is finally doing something where kids are hiding behind the sofa because of the action, not to avoid the really bad writing.)

It's funny that Disney prides itself on having a vision mapped out for Marvel and its movies/shows but with SW they made it up as they went along.

The way I see the Mandalorian is you're essentially watching a western every episode. The good guy rolls into town deals with the bad guys then moves on. Frankly, I'm just happy to have some SW that doesn't revolve around the Mitchell family for a change.

Marvel movies are entertaining but also entirely predictable. Time will tell if they can maintain the momentum and people don't get bored of their D+ shows.

Its really unusual (for American shows at least) that Mando is so lean and pared back- its under 30 minutes, no waffle. Its also great in that it has some actual character growth (Mando with his 'creed' as an example) or even minor characters like Mayfield. Its the polar opposite to the MCU which pads stuff out like crazy.

The netflix marvel shows were even worse with 13 episodes and 60% of it could've been cut with zero impact.

I like the D+ shows pair the episode counts back.

I just got tingly when S2 of Mando mirrored S1 where Mando says what Moff Gideon said to him and you knew it was going to be spicy. And then he turns up.

The SW shows have promise- I just hope they can keep the new trilogy at bay really and not go shouty Abrams.
