State of the Game

I just like good, consistant stories, the latest trilogy unraveled very quickly into "who, wait, what, where did they go, magic, what, goth rage, who again, oh he dead..." etc...in no particular order.
I understood 4, 5, 6 when i was a kid...new ones, not so much.

It's funny that Disney prides itself on having a vision mapped out for Marvel and its movies/shows but with SW they made it up as they went along.

Even the Mandalorian - starts off well, nice mystery and a quest - but by the end of S2 (IIRC) I was thinking - this is going to go on forever isn't it?
The way I see the Mandalorian is you're essentially watching a western every episode. The good guy rolls into town deals with the bad guys then moves on. Frankly, I'm just happy to have some SW that doesn't revolve around the Mitchell family for a change.

The Marvel films: I really liked all the last phase ones, but really can't be bothered with the new ones - not even sure why as they'll be as super-slick. I think it's the fact that they love following the source comics which have a habit of restarting and removing all consequences 'oh noes Thor lost an eye ... oh here's a replacement' 'half the universe has been vanished ... and they're back'. That was going on before Disney had a hand IIRC.

Some of the Marvel/Disney standalone stuff is still good - really liked WandaVision, that had some real heart.

Marvel movies are entertaining but also entirely predictable. Time will tell if they can maintain the momentum and people don't get bored of their D+ shows.

Its really unusual (for American shows at least) that Mando is so lean and pared back- its under 30 minutes, no waffle. Its also great in that it has some actual character growth (Mando with his 'creed' as an example) or even minor characters like Mayfield. Its the polar opposite to the MCU which pads stuff out like crazy.

The netflix marvel shows were even worse with 13 episodes and 60% of it could've been cut with zero impact.

I like the D+ shows pair the episode counts back.

I just got tingly when S2 of Mando mirrored S1 where Mando says what Moff Gideon said to him and you knew it was going to be spicy. And then he turns up.

The SW shows have promise- I just hope they can keep the new trilogy at bay really and not go shouty Abrams.

Why anyone insists on giving Abrams money for movies is beyond me. He's an absolutely terrible storyteller.

7 is good - but it's the start of the 7/8/9 trilogy so does lots of set-up, though I thought it got going pretty fast. Eight is a favourite. Looking forward to 9, though I don't see how they can 'land' it successfully - so many large open questions ...

I think my main issue with the later books is that they tend to interleave the viewpoints of many characters - one per chapter - so I'm always wanting to get back to another character. Less of an issue on re-reads.
