Which would you choose? Tournament for fun

Here are pairs of popular animals which likely have the same niche in a dlc. Bold the ones you choose:

  • Agouti vs. Patagonian mara
  • Grey crowned crane vs. Marabou stork
  • Black rhino vs. Sumatran rhino
  • Eurasian otter vs. Asian small clawed otter
  • Lar gibbon vs. Siamang
  • Red deer vs. Fallow deer
  • Addax vs. Scimitar oryx
  • African spurred tortoise vs. Radiated tortoise
  • Markhor vs. Takin
  • Spectacled bear vs. American black bear
  • Yellow rock-footed wallaby vs. Tree kangaroo
  • Eurasian lynx vs. Iberian lynx
  • Red river hog vs. Collared peccary
  • Caracal vs. Serval
  • Mute swan vs. Black swan
  • Hamadryas baboon vs. Gelada
  • Emu vs. Greater rhea
  • Honey badger vs. European badger
  • Raccoon vs. Coatimundi
  • Ground hornbill vs. Helmeted guinea fowl

Just for fun. You can suggest more animals and I'd add them

  • Agouti vs. Patagonian mara - seems considerably more common in captivity, and at least in my mind they're a bit larger which is preferable
  • Grey crowned crane vs. Marabou stork - one of the most beautiful birds vs. one of the most hideous? no contest lol
  • Black rhino vs. Sumatran rhino - honestly I'd be just as fine without any more rhinos, but I've got to go with the one that actually exists in zoos in a meaningful capacity here.
  • Eurasian otter vs. Asian small clawed otter - honestly it's the North American river otter and it isn't close, but the ASCO is fine too. Eurasian otter would hit the awkward mark of being near-identical to the NARO for most intents and purposes, but I'd never be able to get over it not technically being the species I'd want to use. Just a dumb brain thing.
  • Lar gibbon vs. Siamang - weak preference because the siamang seems more common in zoos around here at least. Shame because the lar gibbon is more visually striking.
  • Red deer vs. Fallow deer - red deer is majestic looking, fallow deer is... decidedly less so. I'd take the white-tailed deer over it, even.
  • Addax vs. Scimitar oryx - a tough one. Addax is slightly more visually unique, but I just can't ignore that "extinct in the wild" status
  • African spurred tortoise vs. Radiated tortoise - another super close one. The main point in the African spurred's favor is that it would be our only mainland tortoise.
  • Markhor vs. Takin - markhor brings Zoo Tycoon 1 nostalgia but honestly I prefer the looks of the takin. Neither really appear in captivity around here though so I can't imagine I'd end up using either too much.
  • Spectacled bear vs. American black bear - nearly impossible to call. I still think that getting all 8 bear species into the game should've been one of Frontier's long-term goals out of the gate, but we're so close yet so far away with 5 of them. If the sloth bear were a contender, it'd win easily because I love their coats and awkward expressiveness, but as it stands I guess I have the weakest of preferences for the American black bear as it's infinitely
  • Yellow rock-footed wallaby vs. Tree kangaroo - this might have been a really close one if it were a different wallaby species, but my love for tree kangaroos wins this one handily. I really love the way the yellow-footed rock wallaby looks, but I would strongly prefer the infinitely more common Bennett's.
  • Eurasian lynx vs. Iberian lynx - weak preference, but I prefer their face shape as well as their broader distribution
  • Red river hog vs. Collared peccary - an easy call even though I'd really love to see both species in the game. The red river hog is just too charming.
Some additional suggestions:
  • Caracal vs. Serval
  • Mute swan vs. Black swan
  • Hamadryas baboon vs. Gelada
  • Emu vs. Greater rhea
  • Wolverine vs. European badger
  • Raccoon vs. Coatimundi
  • Ground hornbill vs. Helmeted guinea fowl
There's probably several other primate possibilities but we're so lacking in proper monkeys it feels tricky to properly pair them off

Great suggestions! I added them but switched the wolverine for the honey badger.

  • Agouti vs. Patagonian mara - Would add another much-needed species from the southern grasslands of South America.
  • Grey crowned crane vs. Marabou stork - A more attractive bird that is better-suited for mixed savannah enclosures.
  • Black rhino vs. Sumatran rhino - The more commonly-kept of the two that also has the broadest biome ranges of all the rhinos (grassland, desert and tropical should all work).
  • Eurasian otter vs. Asian small clawed otter - Although not as commonly kept, this otter is more climate tolerant and more different to the giant otter we already have (solitary instead of social, able to use all seven biomes instead of just aquatic, tropical and grassland)
  • Lar gibbon vs. Siamang - Wouldn't mind any species of gibbon within reason, but the siamang is bigger and louder and is quite often kept in mixed enclosures with orangutans.
  • Red deer vs. Fallow deer - One of the most commonly-kept animals in European zoos, which is different in both size and colouration to the two species of deer we already have in the game.
  • Addax vs. Scimitar oryx - I have seen the oryx more often and they are quite often kept in mixed-species enclosures; ultimately this is one that I wouldn't mind if we got either of them.
  • African spurred tortoise vs. Radiated tortoise - The spurred is the most commonly-kept tortoise in European zoos and is often kept in smaller zoos as well.
  • Markhor vs. Takin - One of my most-wanted ungulates in the game. Although the markhor is nice, I have seen takin more often in zoos.
  • Spectacled bear vs. American black bear - No question in my mind. The spectacled bear is the more different of the two to any of the other bears in-game.
  • Yellow rock-footed wallaby vs. Tree kangaroo - I would definitely choose the tree kangaroo in order to have a true rainforest marsupial; I would probably choose the Goodfellow's tree kangaroo.
  • Eurasian lynx vs. Iberian lynx - Smaller, rarer and with a beautiful spotted coat; wouldn't mind the Eurasian lynx but the Iberian is my preference.
  • Red river hog vs. Collared peccary - The red river hog is the more brightly-coloured species, can be kept in mixed enclosures with all sorts of other animals and is a rather more common species in zoos here in Europe. If we got a peccary, I would hope it is the Chacoan peccary.
And the additional species:
  • Caracal vs. Serval - A very nice-looking cat; I admit I am choosing it partly because there is a new zoo opening near to me early next year that will have servals and I am excited to see them.
  • Mute swan vs. Black swan - I can't think of any zoo I've visited that actually keeps mute swans (they all tend to be visiting wild birds) whereas the black swan is quite a common fixture in Australian exhibits.
  • Hamadryas baboon vs. Gelada - The gelada seems to be becoming more and more common in both larger and medium-sized zoos in Europe; because they are completely herbivorous they can be mixed with animals that true baboons would just eat, such as dik-diks, hyraxes and geese. My nearest local zoo has them as well, and they are fantastic to watch.
  • Emu vs. Greater rhea - I see both species quite often in smaller zoos, but I think the emu is the better-known species that would add a lot to mixed enclosures with red kangaroos.
  • Honey badger vs. European badger - The European badger is probably one of the most charismatic of all European animals although this is another case where I wouldn't mind what species comes.
  • Raccoon vs. Coatimundi - I was in a bit of a quandary about this choice, as both species are going to become a lot rarer in European zoos in the future (both have been banned from being bred) but ultimately I think the coati, specifically the South American, is my preference.
  • Ground hornbill vs. Helmeted guinea fowl - A tough decision but the Southern ground hornbill for me wins out - they are larger, highly social, very intelligent (would interact a lot with enrichment) and are more threatened. They also have the benefit of not having such an irritating call.

  • Caracal vs. Serval

  • Hamadryas baboon
  • Emu
  • European badger
  • Raccoon
  • Ground hornbill vs. Helmeted guinea fowl
I genuinely can't decide between the caracal and serval, or the hornbill and guinea fowl. Those are probably the only two on the list that make me say, "Why not both?"

  • Agouti vs. Patagonian mara ---> the mara is more unique with that rabbit-like look.
  • Grey crowned crane vs. Marabou stork ---> it's one of the first birds that come to my mind when thinking of Africa.
  • Black rhino vs. Sumatran rhino ---> none.

  • Eurasian otter vs. Asian small clawed otter ---> my local zoo has them and I think they offer a wider range of biomes.
  • Lar gibbon vs. Siamang ---> 2x1 in terms of colour.
  • Red deer vs. Fallow deer ---> it's the "standard" deer for me.

  • Addax vs. Scimitar oryx ---> I like it more.
  • African spurred tortoise vs. Radiated tortoise ---> I know it better.
  • Markhor vs. Takin ---> they look more impressive with those horns. The male in my local zoo is freaking huge.

  • Spectacled bear vs. American black bear ---> Eurasian brown bear for me, please!
  • Yellow rock-footed wallaby vs. Tree kangaroo ---> a Bennet wallaby would be even better for colder temperatures.
  • Eurasian lynx vs. Iberian lynx ---> I'm from Spain, and its conservation efforts are worth being recognised.

  • Red river hog vs. Collared peccary ---> both? I choose the one for the desert to add more animals to that biome.
  • Caracal vs. Serval ---> the caracal looks like a sort of lynx and I want both European lynx first.
  • Mute swan vs. Black swan ---> it's the "standard" swan for me.

  • Hamadryas baboon vs. Gelada ---> I'm more familiar with it.
  • Emu vs. Greater rhea ---> It's more iconic and a must-have for Australia.
  • Honey badger vs. European badger ---> such a cutie!

  • Raccoon vs. Coatimundi ---> both (I chose no rhino, remember? So I can pick two now).
  • Ground hornbill vs. Helmeted guinea fowl ---> meh, I don't care.

  • Agouti vs. Patagonian mara
  • Grey crowned crane vs. Marabou stork (really tough call but and the Crane is probably a better pick but I would probably use the Marabou more)
  • Black rhino vs. Sumatran rhino
  • Eurasian otter vs. Asian small clawed otter
  • Lar gibbon vs. Siamang
  • Red deer vs. Fallow deer
  • Addax vs. Scimitar oryx
  • African spurred tortoise vs. Radiated tortoise
  • Markhor vs. Takin (tough call but as much as I love the Markhor is more frequent in zoos and has a cool look)
  • Spectacled bear vs. American black bear (tough call and I wanted to say American but the Andean Bear seems a more striking pick)
  • Yellow rock-footed wallaby vs. Tree kangaroo
  • Eurasian lynx vs. Iberian lynx
  • Red river hog vs. Collared peccary (tough call but I want more Southwest animals. And just desert animals in general)
  • Caracal vs. Serval (all these tough calls. Yowza)
  • Mute swan vs. Black swan
  • Hamadryas baboon vs. Gelada
  • Emu vs. Greater rhea
  • Honey badger vs. European badger
  • Raccoon vs. Coatimundi
  • Ground hornbill vs. Helmeted guinea fowl

First of all, every one of them would be great additions to the roster, sometimes I have choosen without having a strong preference and I would be just as happy with the other option:

  • Agouti vs. Patagonian mara ---> there are few species from temperate South America both in PZ in real zoos
  • Grey crowned crane vs. Marabou stork ---> endangered and beautiful (in Ugandan flag) vs least concern and ugly
  • Black rhino vs. Sumatran rhino ---> both are good, Sumatran is in no zoos currently, but redhaired rhino is too much cool...
  • Eurasian otter vs. Asian small clawed otter ---> right now, we need every European animal we can get, and we already have lots of tropical Asian species

  • Lar gibbon vs. Siamang ---> regular gibbon with 2 colours vs strange gibbon only in black
  • Red deer vs. Fallow deer ---> just because we already have lots of red deer decorations since base game
  • Addax vs. Scimitar oryx ---> just because of extinct in the wild status
  • African spurred tortoise vs. Radiated tortoise ---> more endangered and for using in walkthrough lemur exhibits

  • Markhor vs. Takin ---> but any mountain ungulate species would be welcome, we need at least a couple more
  • Spectacled bear vs. American black bear ---> American black is just like the most standard bear (which is also its strongest feature), Spectacled is more endangered and we have much more animals from temperate North America than from South America
  • Yellow rock-footed wallaby vs. Tree kangaroo ---> though one, both are very cute, but with the current climbing system I prefer a jumping kangaroo rahter than one who should be all the time in a tree
  • Eurasian lynx vs. Iberian lynx ---> we need more European animal and some Mediterranean representation, this one give us both

  • Red river hog vs. Collared peccary ---> we already have an African and a jungle pig, so sadly we don't need that much an African jungle pig
  • Caracal vs. Serval ---> very different and yet I see them as equivalent? But caracal also lives in North Africa and Middle East so...
  • Mute swan vs. Black swan ---> the standard swan, as said in previous post
  • Hamadryas baboon vs. Gelada ---> more common in zoos and gives representation to Arabian peninsula

  • Emu vs. Greater rhea ---> because rhea is more similar to ostrich, which we already have
  • Honey badger vs. European badger ---> just because of wider range, I could have flipped a coin for these two
  • Raccoon vs. Coatimundi ---> though one, but aren't raccoons like a mix of a coati and a red panda?
  • Ground hornbill vs. Helmeted guinea fowl ---> hornbills are always great, but we need more land fowls in general

  • Agouti vs. Patagonian mara --> Tough one but spontanously In decided for the agouti, perhaps because I have just seen one in the zoo 33 weeks ago
  • Grey crowned crane vs. Marabou stork --> Clear thing for me. Ugliness wins in this case
  • Black rhino vs. Sumatran rhino --> Both would be okay for me but because of its impressive appearance and because they are much more common in Zoos In voted for the black rhino
  • Eurasian otter vs. Asian small clawed otter --> Clear thing for me. The asco ist always the Highlight in sweetness in my local zoo
  • Lar gibbon vs. Siamang --> Siamang are more impressive
  • Red deer vs. Fallow deer --> The Reed deer are majestic animals which I would prefer over the fallen deer
  • Addax vs. Scimitar oryx --> The horns of the Adidas decided this battle for me
  • African spurred tortoise vs. Radiated tortoise --> the coloration ist more beautiful
  • Markhor vs. Takin --> I would like to have both but again the horns decide the battle
  • Spectacled bear vs. American black bear --> Clear decision. The spectacled bear ist the only remaining short-faced bear species. I must say that of the 3 remaining bear species the American black bear is even Position 3 behind the sloth bear. At the Ende I would not have a problem if all 3 remaining bear species are still coming to us. As long as we do not get a third brown bear subspecies like the eurasian brown bear (my Personal nightmare animal)
  • Yellow rock-footed wallaby vs. Tree kangaroo --> tree kangaroos are more unique to me
  • Eurasian lynx vs. Iberian lynx --> Looks better to me
  • Red river hog vs. Collared peccary --> Both are welcome to the game but it is a clear battle for me. The appearance of Red River hogs is more beautiful and unique
  • Caracal vs. Serval --> Again both are welcome. I prefer the caracal a little big over the serval
  • Mute swan vs. Black swan --> It is the swan species I am used to see
  • Hamadryas baboon vs. Gelada --> Both are welcome. But the hamadryas baboon are the more Ironie species I think
  • Emu vs. Greater rhea --> Again both are welcome but in my opinion the Emu is really missing in the game. But I must say the cassowary was the better choice in my opinion for the birds pick in Australia DLC
  • Honey badger vs. European badger --> Both are welcome but I case of the honey Badger I always have to think about a video I have seen a while ago in which a honey badger runs always away from bis enclosure
  • Raccoon vs. Coatimundi --> For me more a typical Zoo animal
  • Ground hornbill vs. Helmeted guinea fowl --> Spontanous decision
Other suggestions:

African small antelopes:
Dik Dik vs. Duiker --> Both are welcome but the Kirks Dik Dik is among my top 3 animals I want to have. The are so sweet

Small deers:
Muntjac vs. Pudu --> The teeth decide this battle

Indian Antelopes:
Nilgai vs. Blackbuck --> Both are welcome but the blackbuck surely is the most beautiful antelope in my opinion

Hyeanas:
Striped hyeana vs. Aardwolf --> More iconic in my opinion

South American small cats:
Ocelot vs. Jaguarundi --> Whereas the jaguarundi has its unique appearance the ocelot wins the battle because for me it is more iconic

African ground birds:
Secretary bird vs. Shoebill --> Both are welcome but the shoebill looks so funny to me

Horses:
Somali Wild Donkey vs. Przewalski Horse --> Very difficult but I prefer the donkey a little bit more

Goats:
Barbary Sheep vs. Alpine Ibex --> In my opinion the most important European animal

Doing this I recognized that there could probably still be 15 DLCs and there would still be some animals which I would miss in the game 😀

  • Spectacled bear vs. American black bear
  • Yellow rock-footed wallaby vs. Tree kangaroo
  • Eurasian lynx vs. Iberian lynx (fine with either but the latter might have more utility as an endangered species; biased US perspective here)

  • Mute swan vs. Black swan write-in: Trumpeter swan
  • Hamadryas baboon vs. Gelada
  • Emu vs. Greater rhea
  • Honey badger vs. European badger

  • Ground hornbill vs. Helmeted guinea fowl

Screw it, let's have some fun:

  • Agouti vs. Patagonian mara - As much as I love Agoutis (check the nexus lmfao, almost every species of agouti has been done), Patagonian Maras have my heart and can be displayed in much larger herds than Agoutis, which are more solitary animals
  • Grey crowned crane vs. Marabou stork - Tough choice, but I've always loved Crowned Cranes
  • Black rhino vs. Sumatran rhino - Black Rhinos are just badass
  • Eurasian otter vs. Asian small clawed otter [SEA OTTER] - 8)
  • Lar gibbon vs. Siamang - strictly for their calls alone, and the big pouch on their throat, I love these dudes lol
  • Red deer vs. Fallow deer - They're so much cuter!
  • Addax vs. Scimitar oryx - Touch choice, but I love Scimitars a lot more
  • African spurred tortoise vs. Radiated tortoise - For tortoises, size is always key, and having the third largest tortoise works a lot better
  • Markhor vs. Takin - This is the hardest decision of my life
  • Spectacled bear vs. American black bear - South American Supremacy
  • Yellow rock-footed wallaby vs. Tree kangaroo - Tree Kangaroos just catch my attention a lot more
  • Eurasian lynx vs. Iberian lynx - VIVA ESPANA!
  • Red river hog vs. Collared peccary - Love their colors :)
  • Caracal vs. Serval - floppa moment
  • Mute swan vs. Black swan - Nothing personal just a Black Swan tried to attack me at the park one time
  • Hamadryas baboon vs. Gelada -
    6489f507cb7598006a48ec23c1eb721114a30c3c.jpg
  • Emu vs. Greater rhea - As much as I love Emus, Rheas are really cool and relatively unknown South American ratites
  • Honey badger vs. European badger - Honey Badger don't care..
  • Raccoon vs. Coatimundi - Coatis are so much cuter I'm sorry lol
  • Ground hornbill vs. Helmeted guinea fowl - Just general birds we need a lot more of but Guineafowl are very versatile, they can be put with anything

  • Agouti vs. Patagonian mara
  • Grey crowned crane vs. Marabou stork
  • Black rhino vs. Sumatran rhino
  • Eurasian otter vs. Asian small clawed otter - actually neither of them. One otter species is enough for me personally, but I know that many people want a second one.
  • Lar gibbon vs. Siamang
  • Red deer vs. Fallow deer - I want both.
  • Addax vs. Scimitar oryx - I like again both.
  • African spurred tortoise vs. Radiated tortoise
  • Markhor vs. Takin - aaaand again both! (i repeat myself...)
  • Spectacled bear vs. American black bear
  • Yellow rock-footed wallaby vs. Tree kangaroo
  • Eurasian lynx vs. Iberian lynx
  • Red river hog vs. Collared peccary - I like both.
  • Caracal vs. Serval
  • Mute swan vs. Black swan
  • Hamadryas baboon vs. Gelada
  • Emu vs. Greater rhea
  • Honey badger vs. European badger
  • Raccoon vs. Coatimundi - again both.
  • Ground hornbill vs. Helmeted guinea fowl - and again both!

  • Agouti vs. Patagonian mara-They're bigger and fit with other animals better, also more non tropical SA animals are welcome
  • Grey crowned crane vs. Marabou stork-Look way prettier and mix with other species excellently
  • Black rhino vs. Sumatran rhino-I preferred Black to White before Africa pack. So I still won't be mad if we get it down the line
  • Eurasian otter vs. Asian small clawed otter-"The Otter", always was for me. Also bigger and better suited for cold, as we already have tropical otter
  • Lar gibbon vs. Siamang-More color versatility, and more iconic imo, but wouldn't mind either or both
  • Red deer vs. Fallow deer-Red is the base for the other deers, icon of many European countries, majesty embodied
  • Addax vs. Scimitar oryx-ExinWild and way prettier, again imo
  • African spurred tortoise vs. Radiated tortoise-Bigger, sand biome, ZT nostalgia, you name it
  • Markhor vs. Takin-Tough one. Changed my mind several times. Takin ended up being the lucky one the "coin landed on"
  • Spectacled bear vs. American black bear-I mean it's not even competition, also very needed for my Parco Natura Viva replica
  • Yellow rock-footed wallaby vs. Tree kangaroo-If it was Bennet choice would be harder. But Tree Kangaroo also gives that exotic vibe to your Oceania sections
  • Eurasian lynx vs. Iberian lynx-Tougher choice than Takin. But in this one I have slight personal preferences. But Eurasian is bigger, lives in cold climates, looks prettier and is stockier. But I would love to get them both. Iberian is whole another niche
  • Red river hog vs. Collared peccary-One of the staple zoo animals imo. It mixes well with others, but I wouldn't mind peccary one bit
  • Caracal vs. Serval-Covers bigger range, plus desert representation. I believe Serval niche is covered by Cheetahs and Painted Dogs in game
  • Mute swan vs. Black swan-Classic look you can't miss in your zoos, also covers wider range and is not as exotic so it can fit in more zoos and habitats
  • Hamadryas baboon vs. Gelada-I would always go for colder region animals but they are just too iconic and also that desert rep
  • Emu vs. Greater rhea-Emu is a must have Australian bird and on top of that I am not biggest fan of Rheas
  • Honey badger vs. European badger-My European buddy takes this anytime. I can only imagine exhibits I would made for them
  • Raccoon vs. Coatimundi-Another zoo staple, at least here in Europe, SA sections are empty without them
  • Ground hornbill vs. Helmeted guinea fowl-Compatibility. Would add so much soul to mixed savannah exhibiths
