State of the Game

new obsidian ant video

22% say "content is ok, I'll play it occasionally" - I wouldn't consider that playing Odyssey happily though, they tolerate it ... somewhat sometimes. Just 8% are happy with it, and that is about 1 in 12 - to say, that it is not a failure, is ... daring. it's a disaster actually. And being unable to fix it within half a year is even worse, like declaring bankruptcy - well, they won't have to declare that, because they kept the money - as well from those, who do not even have a date nor a confirmation yet, that they will ever get anything (console).

the score board is at 0:32 of the video - for a closer look.

oh, I didn't know that - yes, that was what I was thinking - at least then it is not as bad as I thought it would be - money-wise.
The "FDev Business model afficiondos" are quoting that projected income for the next fiscal year has been reduced, suggesting that this is due to no console version being available...

Me, I don't honestly care about stock prices over a period of a few days, Frontier have sufficient assets to keep going for a while yet, so assuming they do manage to pull a hat from the rabbit then I can continue to play for as long as the game is supported.

That said... I'm about to replace my Rift S for another HMD so could be sidetracked enjoying some VR play again! ;) (Yes, I'll play Odyssey in VR if I know I'm not going walkies, but the lack of IPD adjustment on the Rift S makes longer play sessions difficult)

What HMD are you going for?

Valve Index, surprisingly.

I was considering the HP Reverb G2 but still don't like the comments on tracking, nor having to have Windows AR running alongside steam, pretty much how I don't really like the Oculus layer being added. Allegedly most of the games I like wil run with revive if I can't get steam versions, so am quite happy with the decision. Rumour has it there may be a newer Index due sooner or later, but if I keep waiting for the 'latest & greatest' all of the time, I'll never buy anything!

like many women I have a problem with VR headsets - so I cannot have this experience without to get near to vomiting - it would be suffering through it not playing it.

I didn't suggest, that FDev isn't financially solid, I actually think they are and made an economical decision to phase out Elite and let it enter into it's decline phase. It is probably the right decision because they would have to put in a whole lot more effort and staff to cope with concurrence products - and it would still be questionable, if they could even keep up with those. It is sad, that a long-running series like Elite is to be phased out, but I think, that is what FDev is going for, most likely with a tear or two in their eyes as well.

That's a shame really, VR, when done well (Horizons & the same content in EDO is surprisingly well done) it can add to gameplay very well, done poorly can appear litle different than flatscreen (I have a couple of games that are marginally VR, despite being exclusive to VR) but with 'headlook'.

My late wife enjoyed VR while sitting, but couldn't play standing, yet one of our friends was immediately feeling 'sick' the moment she moved her head in VR.

A few weeks back I visited a friend who introduced me to VR via the Reverb G2 (connected to RTX 3070 laptop) and Half Life Alyx. All I can say is wow! I was blown away. First time I've felt vertigo in a video game...

He/they doesn't/don't use controllers that came with. The controllers he had were very easy to use, even for me and required sensors in the corners of the rooms but he said they very much prefer them over the included ones. Would you be interested in knowing which controllers those are?

BTW, I was afraid to try ED in VR because we're in the middle of buying a house and I really really do not need the "I wants" right now...

main hinderance for VR for me in elite is it's hard to look at your other monitors / books with the VR headset on. So i only bother when it's something exciting where you're not resorting to secondary screens... like bounty hunting / combat. using VR while dogfighting is definitely an advantage over playing on a monitor. plus it obviously is a cooler experience.
