Arf's Holiday Message

Greetings Commanders,

As we approach the end of the year, I thought I would do something different. Instead of the usual Development Update, I would like to show more than tell; specifically around Fleet Carriers! We will have a full Development Update in January 2022, and lay out our plans for communicating with you through updates, streams and social channels.

So the end of year update is that you are going to have an update in January.

Update 9

Update 9 is planned for release next week, with full patch notes published on the same day. Once we have a confirmed date and time we will of course let you know! Here are the highlights of what Update 9 will bring:

We're going to tell you about what's coming next week, next week.

My thoughts on next year

One of the biggest aspects coming in 2022, literally and figuratively, is the addition of Fleet Carrier interiors. There is a huge amount that the team have been working on regarding this, so as promised we would much rather show you!

Join us on December 16th for our Christmas stream! This will be our last stream of the year and we want it to be special. Along with the usual fun you would expect for our end of year stream, we will be taking you on a tour around a Fleet Carrier interior for the first time. We will also be joined by a member of the development team to help us answer as many of your questions as we can.

Please remember that what we show will very much be work in progress and not final. There will also be some elements we will not show, as we feel some things are best experienced in-person, such as the all-important jump...
-Arf
So I am guessing that the Marquee item - the Internal view for PC Odyssey commanders of a Fleet Carrier jump isn't working yet.

Outside of Fleet Carrier interiors, the development team are hard at work on new features and mission types, such as settlement defence that I cannot wait to share more on. We are also reviewing and assessing a number of areas that you have raised ...
... but as I said, I will leave those details for January!

It is fair to say this has been a challenging year for Elite Dangerous but we are proud and grateful of our community. It is our community’s continued love and support that drives us forward each and every day. To quote the first American female astronaut in space and physicist, Sally Ride - “The stars don’t look bigger, but they do look brighter.”

From the team and I, and all of us here at Frontier: have a wonderful holiday and we will see you in black!

Possible indication on a console update
if it's not - nothing for consoles.

Personally i think they should fix Odyssey for PC, then make Odyssey for Console. And only when Odyssey is released, bring in new content like fleet carrier interiors.
If you can get Odyssey fixed, you'll start to bring back players, who will then be more inclined to spend money, some of which can then be invested into console development.

At the moment there's a number of console players waitingto buy Odyssey. The thing is, i feel without a reprioritisation, that number will slowly whittle away. Good reviews = new players. When the game is getting bad reviews by big gaming websites, that's not gonna help you.
I know folks are working hard tryna fix Odyssey. And that's definitely appreciated by many. I just don't think new projects should be announced yet like power play etc until the game is stable for all players. I think a lot of PC players would be content just with having a stable game to play with for the time being rather than new extras that might create more bugs in the end

it's sad to say but if that was his thoughts on next year, then we console players are going to have to face it. our game is gone. They have literally left no room for hope now.
It is sad, I rather enjoyed my time in ED and will still pick it up occasionally. Their handling of this update has left a pretty bad taste though. All we can really do is sit back and wait. Maybe play EDH for as long as it's supported and we can still enjoy it. It really isn't worth investing any more energy into FDEV. I think they (as a whole, not CMs) have proven they don't care about the console community, so why continue to chase after something they're not willing to offer?

As a console player, there’s already plenty of appropriate whining about the lack of information, but personally I don’t care that much. I’m willing to wait patiently for more information and one day a more polished product.

I’m infinitely more disappointed by the neglect of the core game mechanics, player communities and player driven projects that function independently of Odyssey. An “end of the year/holiday post” would typically include interesting information about the player community’s accomplishments.

We’d get some numerical and visual representation of things like the updated true percentage of the galaxy explored, limpets utilized, ships destroyed and updates on the biggest movers and shakers in powerplay and in Player Minor Faction BGS.

I’m sure that I will enjoy Odyssey on console whenever it arrives, but for me it’ll at most be a minor addition to what makes Elite a great game. The communities wishing to help mold and shape galactic events, even those of us on console, still hope for a return to player community driven events, infrastructure and colonization that dominated the first 4-5 years of gameplay.

Afraid I'm going to have to have a bit of a rant here ..... As a console user, I and many others are getting more than hacked off with the radio silence around the console release. When Odyssey was launched, and it suffered the plethora of issues, you (as in frontier) stated you were putting console development on hold so you can get the PC version right. Myself, and many others, were not happy at this but saw the reasons why this call was made, and accepted it. Now almost 8 months down the line, the PC version is in a much better place, but instead of now releasing a console version, you are now ADDING NEW FEATURES to the PC version!! This is just not on mate! We were patient once, but patience is wearing very thin. I think the only thing keeping many of us console users interested in Elite is the fact that there's no real alternative on our platform. If Star Citizen existed on console, we'd probably be out the door. However, the clock is ticking and Bethesda's StarField is a-coming......

You need to tell us what is going on.......
Fdev and the CM's have put a complete ban on talking about the console version. this silence is only adding more fuel to the "consoles are being cancelled" fire. this could easily be fixed with small updates, which they refuse to do. sadly I now believe that they are going to cancel the console version and just sell us arks as a side hustle.

to show them that they are on a horrible way for the consoles!

honestly, i don't think the CM's care too much, they always slip up about upcoming things, never once have they about consoles. they know whats going on and they are playing the game with Fdev

I’m honestly not sure what annoys me as a console user the most….. the fact we’ve heard zero about a console release, or the fact that someone in Frontier thinks that it’s perfectly acceptable to keep us in the dark. Embarrassing.
Exactly, this !!!
In facts, I feel that even the PC players should be on our side. It has to do with fairness and respect among ED players, not do demand new shiny features until all brothers and sisters are EDO-wise on board.

Update 9

Update 9 is planned for release next week, with full patch notes published on the same day. Once we have a confirmed date and time we will of course let you know! Here are the highlights of what Update 9 will bring:
  • New Twin-Seat Combat Multicrew SRV
  • Mission extensions
  • Multi Limpet Controller
This update will also include a plethora of fixes and tweaks, including (but not limited to) the following:
  • Issues relating to inactive AI at conflict zones will now be resolved.
  • Issues relating to hatch breaker limpets when used on cargo hatch or escape pods on non-dockable megaships (Odyssey and Horizons)
  • Thermal Conduit no longer has the incorrect damage increase and is correctly represented visually.
  • Completing high influence missions will now affect Background Simulation as expected.
  • Stations no longer 'pop' into existence when jumping out of supercruise
One of the tweaks we have looked at based on your feedback is atmospheric lighting. I would like to share some before and after pictures of what you can expect with Update 9. These lighting effects will be noticeable when stars are low on the horizon.

One thing I am particularly excited for is the conclusion of the Azimuth Saga. We have been delighted to see our community engaging with this story arc and we cannot wait to expand on it ;). The narrative team and I are excited to entertain, perplex and thrill you with what we have in store next year!

Any news for Console release? We hope to don’t wait another year… We would like to play Odyssey too… thanks…

Nice to see the graphic star port popping coming out of super cruise issue will be addressed. How about the other issues of coming out of super cruise, like coming out of super cruise over a planet and screen freezes a fraction of a second and you get flash view of cockpit shot and everything is all so jerky. Or is that just VR issue and we know how FDev cares about that. No, I'm being negative. Patient for a long time, but I should not be negative with all the good stuff being done to EDO. Maybe not my priority, but what the hey, all fixes and new stuff is greatly appreciated.

Keep up the excellent updates, thank you for that.
