In th UK:
traditionally, a village doesn’t have a cathedral or a market but it will have a church.
Whereas a Town has a market
a City has a cathedral or university.
Problem is there are lots of exceptions (as with everything in UK).
The village I was born in received the decree of 'township' form the Archbishop of York in 1239, but everybody considered(d) it a village until recently.
