Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

Not entirely, they have said that SM requires a bunch of prerequisites:

That’s a fan-made resource friend. (You are not doing your ‘hopium over citation' credentials much good here ;))

It’s also I unclear what point you’re trying to make.

Yes, CIG have made a lot of noise about many pre-server-meshing techs. Yes, many of them are still missing. No, they haven’t delivered the dynamic server meshing dream as yet. (Let alone by 2018, when it was supposed to arrive).

Are you going to actually articulate an argument, or just post pretty pictures?

You can test this with loading up a bunch of 890 jumps on a server as they've said an Idris or Javelin with an Interior makes pretty much the same performance impact as an 890 Jump. A CIG dev said this on reddit, altough I cannot be bothered right now to scower through endless posts to get a link to it. Out of my experience, the server doesn't care too much about a couple 890s in it.

I’d be interested to see the quote, but they’re likely just talking about one strand of the load there. Assets.

890Js have the asset complexity, but they don’t any NPC crew. Let alone NPC turrets (which have a notable performance hit in big engagements like Xeno Threat according to Tony Z). They’re nowhere near the functionality that CIG is aiming to support, let alone at the scale of a Javelin etc on those fronts.

When KSP gives me space combat, then it might replace Elite. I was also going to comment on graphic quality, but the videos for KSP 2 look pretty amazing, actually.
Mods, and mods do all of that :) Mods for great graphics (although KSP 2 seems to be really nice looking out of the box), mods for combat. You even have full atmo combat with one of the most realistic atmo flight model ever realized (through the "Ferram Aerospace" mod for the FM, and another mod for the air-to-air weaponry).

Dude, listen to yourself. Its 10 years.

Yes, plans change, of course they do, but this is a fundamental component of the game. Something they sold backers on from the very early days. Networking should have been (yes, really, should have been) one of the first things they nailed down once they decided it was going to be an online game. Not just starting on the tech (Tier 0) that may, just possible, allow more than 50 people per shard with more than 1 system.

That isn't "plans change", that's downright incompetence.
No it's deliberate fraud. They knew it from the start it couldnt be done.

Lindworm. They rest in the catacombes de Paris. Tout le monde sait ca.
Woah! My sister-in-law heralds back to Breton, sings Acadienne, and spent numerous years on one of her higher degrees in France. Why is it I only know of the Lindworm from D&D? This is a travesty, and surely there must be songs about it dating back to at least the 1100s (AD).

Can a ship go into a proper orbit, or is this fake variable gravity like Space Engineers provides?

Not that I'm looking for KSP in Star Citizen, mind you.
Regarding the fidelity and experience of actual star systems, a few more things SC does not have either is real 1:1 planetary body sizes, and navigable free flight control when in quantum mode (the equivalent to supercruise). The few "planets" available now in SC are around 1/6th to 1/10th or so of real usual sizes if memory serves. For example the only gas giant in the system is around the same size of the Earth (for reference Jupiter is around 12 times larger than the Earth). And players are forced to travel between existing discreet way points in the system without any free steering control in flight. I personally find the fidelity of star systems at 1:1 scale with celestial mechanics and with complete control of flight by the pilot gives me huge levels of freedom and immersion, that in a space sim is key for exploration for example.

Somebody told me I should just quit Elite, but until another game comes along and gives me proper orbit mechanics, Elite has leverage on me. I could totally live with a single solar system, but I want it to be a system, with proper orbit mechanics, seasons, planets moving across the heavens, eclipses, etc.

But seeing the stars and planets move through the sky at night would be something I don't get in NMS or SE, so I'll give Star Citizen credit for at least getting things half right.
You did try Kerbal Space Program? Should be up your alley with what the building and that.

It is more of a germanic lore - not so much romanic, I guess. Thogh Breton is kinda a special case I believe.

I don't mind my FTL flight being "on rails", as this is the way of most space games I play (FTL travel is via jump gates or wormholes). I thought I read an article that you can actually travel free flight in regular space in Star Citizen and go wherever you want, and a group of people did just that to land on the sun, though it took weeks to get there... Did I dream that up, or is it true?

Nah…
Does Elon Musk say this to crowdfunding backers a decade after slapping "Alpha" on his ships and constantly misleading about release dates "coming 2014", "answer the call 2016", "answer the call 2017" etc then? Otherwise I fail to see the relevance?
Nope. He does that kind of thing with city, state, and national governments. Though CR does aspire towards that lofty goal, given how he chases those juicy entertainment development tax breaks…

Yeah you can as there's no instancing per se of planets / moons / POI. They are loaded or unloaded when at a certain distance (which produces a really annoying hitch in the framerate..). It also used to be that you could quantum travel in any direction, anywhere, it was just kinda pointless as there's nothing but empty space.
That said:
  • You can interrupt QT anytime and then QT to another point, resulting in getting completely out of the usual travel lanes. So it's not "on rails" really but more than a selection of points you can jump to and from. Of course in "normal space" you can just go anywhere you want.
  • Interrupting QT is actually the only way to reach some rare mineral rich asteroids as the asteroid belt itself has no QT point.
  • There are several orbital markers (OM) around each celestial body so you can move around there quickly, OR you can just move to these in normal flight too
