Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

Some Saturday reading, from the guy who brought you SC server and network performance case study: XenoThreat v2

I believe the takeaways are:

  • If SC hits its target of 30hz for the server tick, bandwidth requirements would be obscene as things stand.
  • Classic bandwidth reduction strategies (ignoring distant ships) not in evidence.
  • Xeno took them hard up to the 85kb-per-tick cap
  • Spawning items seems to be notably inefficient (see the box spawning for Destroy the Drugs missions).

Yeahhhh…

This is after EAC (Easy Anti-Cheat) and does not use VorpX since yes you are right EAC made VorpX no longer work. This is using Reshade and a 3d plugin in Reshade along with Virtual Desktop and Opentrack. It will work in current release (3.16), but is a real pain to setup and launch each time. Also there is a notable performance hit with it.

Nahhhh

Struggling through an endless series of hacks after the prior set break, to get hammered performance in an already performance-compromised game, is not my idea of VR fun ;). (Especially not if it’s just on a projected 2D screen, as it sounds like that is, re Virtual Desktop).

[Standard recommendation for the Outer Wilds Nomai mod here]

(Although currently I’m enjoying the Valheim VHVrR mod ;))

Looks deeply immersive. Curious cause I'm sure that I've read someone in this thread guarantee that SC would never be viable in VR because of forced animations and performance. Yet that looks more than alright, dare to say actually awesome, specially considering that those corridors and doors makes it like the CMDR is walking in the Millennium Falcon.

Couldn't help notice the saltiness of that video title so looked up some more videos of him, and we it looks like it's another ex-CMDR turned refugee.

We'll we can't really blame the guy, if one manages to make way along all the bugs, performance issues and broken/missing features and and dives deeper into SC it's very hard to come back to other space games, not just Elite. And it's understandable if VR works for him in SC all that graphical quality ends up making a difference.
I mean look at this:
Quite above everything else available in the spaceship dogfighting market I'd say.

The issue for me is not the fidelity, but whats going on behind why these things are happening. If SC had ED BGS and Powerplay like driving forces joining stuff up it would be great.

For me there is only so many times I can walk out a door before I think "what the hell am I doing this for?".

I think in the end its down to what you do in the game. A fair amount of people just want to wander about a ship and land and walk out, and SC does that quite well.

And screenshots and machinima. Lends itself very well to those.

Now what they need to do is just a few simple things like....
109 more systems
Make the networking to allow more content and get more players playing together
Base building and land claim mechanics
Farming
Salvage
Exploration
and... well, basically everything else they sold backers on getting.

Well I have absolutely no clue what's going on behind the scenes all I know is that their one system feels more alive and believable than Elite one. I'f I had to point up the reason it would be the curated feel of the area and the "tactile" gameplay they implemented making press buttons and actually moving boxes in and out of your ship. Those ones and the ones of searching for dead bodies from crashed ships are one of my favourites albeit not as good money makers as the illegal monitors ones.

And got sidetracked and completely missed what I had came to post in the first place:
Kate's crew going about some pirates event with ships inside ships and EVA soldiers rail gunning ships in space and other creative shenanigans:
Very dynamic and exciting engagements.
In another note, Drew's "adventures" continue in a more mild and chill way around that one system in SC.
Worth a watch if you're into a slow paced gameplay style.

What I mean- take for example a Powerplay skirmish I had:

My teammembers for a week instigated a coup and secretly weakened several governments in about five systems- we did this via smuggling, murder, trading, all sorts- but we had to do it quietly.

Meanwhile others created a noisy diversion on the other side of the enemy.

Once the above was done it allowed the Powerplay gameplay in, where we all fought hard while being messed with by Imperials.

Whats going on in SC is pretty much a mission in ED, and half a CZ / POI. It has no ongoing value and thus (for me) reason to do it more than once. SC needs this higher level stuff going on to make it 'gel'- otherwise its (to me) a very pretty tech demo.

Indeed, its the stuff beyond low level missions. Mining seems in a good place, CiG just need to join up those pipelines for the rest.

They're working on a system called "Quanta" which is kind of like ED BGS:

They did a 40 minute video on it

I've heard of it, and really its what SC needs to really make it a game worth playing for me. But I don't envy the job CiG have, considering how complex the BGS in ED can get.
Well they have Tony Z working on it, he's pretty much even crazier in concepting things and making things complex than Chris is, so i'm not worried about the complexity of Quanta
