ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

Released 4th of November.

It seems to have helped my SLI setup. I can finally play VR with my 980 SLI setup! :D

Has there been anything official from Oculus/nvidia about whether the new SDK/drivers are what they mentioned during the 900 series reveal (i.e. VR Direct)? Or is the above your anecdotal opinion?! ;)

VR Direct, or the Split Frame Rendering for VR ("SFR for VR" or "VR SLI").. is still not implemented in these drivers. Still waiting. But by my anecdotal experience, it was previously unplayable, and is now quite smooth. Though there is a tiny hint of added latency, as is to be expected from Alternate Frame Rendering 2.. it is now so tiny as to barely be noticeable.

There is another problem though: DSR does not work with my AFR2 SLI in VR. As soon as I go beyond 1920x1080, I get flickering graphics.

Still waiting for their VR Direct suite though. It better be good!

That is some rig - I am jealous ;)

Do you get a solid 75 fps in stations with Graphics preset = High?

I guess you may still get the odd slow down in some locations due to ED being beta rather than GPU?

PS Beta 3.04 installing now : Looks focused on netcode / improved performance in Open play

- Reduce disconnect output for better tracking
- Additional telemetry for character mismatch issues
- Reduce replication telemetry
- Reduce debug output for authority transfers
- When acknowledging replications, don't queue a backlog, instead send the most recent one once
- Re-instate packet flow control regulation
- Correctly rank a machine against other machines after its sent its first parcel in a frame
- Apply network bandwidth limits in all versions of the game
- Improved method for tracking server disconnects
- Remove replication output when there's a targeted ship, especially bad if there's a ship being given a bad day by a space station
- Don’t send new object letters more than once for the same event
- Remove unneeded output when going live on a server
- Send server telemetry early if we're getting excessive load, so the load-balancing can stop sending us new players
- Enhanced network performance telemetry
- Better network letter compression
- Ignore an incoming start server request if the server hasn't finished initialising
- If the receiver of an authority transfer causes the object to die immediately (eg its too far from the object) then clear down the authority transfer attempt

I have updated to BETA 3 and 0.4.3 version of Oculus Runtime, and now I'm experiencing strange graphical glitches playing on my DK2: instead of black color I see reddish tint, plus vertical screen tearings here and there. Overall performance is good, however this graphical issues looks ugly... Prior to 0.4.3 everything was OK.
I'm running GTX 970 SLI, i7-950, 12 GB, Windows 7 64-bit. Latest (vanilla) nVidia drivers. Other games and demos I have tried runs and looks OK, so this is Elite: Dangerous specific issues. Also, I have tried capturing screenshots, and everything is OK on them, so this is something to be with Oculus Runtime, I believe... Any suggestions?
Thanks!

UPDATE: I just have traced problem to SLI. With disabled SLI everything look normal. Also, my single Asus STRIX 970 GTX is able to run maxed out Elite with 70 FPS on Rift (SSAA is 1.5 in settings.xml). While SLI setup showing roughly 75 FPS with 95% load on BOTH GPUs... And those graphical glitches :(

UPDATE2: This was my faulty SLI connector... Fiddled with it a bit, and everything now works fine. However, my 2x970 SLI setup cannot run 4K Elite on Rift with 75 FPS... :( Max what I'm getting is ~30 FPS when <SSAA>2</SSAA> is specified in settings.xml... Any other way to make text more readable on Rift? Thanks!

Has anyone made a full guide on setting up OR for ED?

Is the guide on the second post of this thread still valid?

I've seen lots of other posts about tweaking graphics settings, monitor refresh rates and son on - is there anything which brings it all together without reading 300 pages of posts and then trying to figure out which tips are actually still valid today?

If no-one does it by the time Gamma comes along, I will.

I don't think the 2nd post is relevant so much now, as it covers a previous version of the Oculus runtime - so most of the extra steps are not needed any more.

Really though, it's pretty straightforward.

1) Install the 0.4.3 runtime (SDK optional)
2) Plug in and turn on the Rift. Run the IPD calibration tool as well.
3) Set the Rift to Extended mode as the 2nd monitor to the left of your main monitor (use Windows control panel for that).
4) Start Elite: Dangerous
5) In options, set the display to Secondary, refresh to 75hz, resolution to 1080 x 1920, and 3D mode to one of the two Oculus profiles.
6) Apply.
7) Experience Spaaaaaaaaaaaaace!

The other graphics options are graphics card & system dependent really, but it's a good idea to start from Low settings and work up & experiment with what looks good to you & your system can handle without judder or slowdowns.

Is 2.12 the latest Firmware? It says I already have 2.12 installed on the one that's just arrived for me.

OK - I encountered 2 small issues so far:

1) When I select extended mode, the rift is the wrong way around - it appears in portrait mode. I have fixed this by using "Rotate Display" in the Nvidia options but is this the correct way to fix this issue?

2) My rift is appearing in Nvidia options as monitor 1, and far to the right. It won't let me switch it to the left of my primary and I had to go into Windows standard control panel for that. If I try to do it from the Nvidia options, it won't let me. To be fair, the instructions do say to use the Windows Control panel. In theory both should achieve the same.

Yes, sorry - I omitted that part from my (brief) instructions. :) I don't know the Nvidia control panel that well as I run AMD cards here, but yes - you need to flip the Rift's display by whatever means. I use Windows control panel for that part... but it doesn't matter what tool you use.

Indeed. :)

I don't think it actually makes a huge difference in a two screen (i.e. one monitor, one Rift) setup, but it does seem to help with getting Windows / E: D to always see the Rift as the "Secondary" screen if you have more than one monitor. It saves faffing with setting monitors options etc every time & play "hunt the display". ;)

This way, once you have it set up, you just need to turn on the Rift, open Elite, and start playing. :)
