Statistically, hospitals are one of the most dangerous places around in real life. Like with deadly stairs, it is yet another facet of SC's uncompromising commitment to realism.
I wish for a softer version of some of it and for the opposite of the rest.

Don’t think that figure means it is over, no. It just indicates that current player participation figures for SC are probably extremely crappy and low. Much, much lower than NMS, EVE and Elite (even after the drop with EDO!) among many other popular games in the genre.
Let's see this from the bright side: that means less backers' money burnt in server costs furnace and more in marketing firepit \o/ Rejoice!!!
